I find it hard to believe that you cannot eat ANY carbs... Who has suggested that you cut your carbs down, your doctor? When I had insulin issues, my doctor told me to cut down to 50g of net carbs per day. That means total carbs minus fiber grams. Fiber doesn't have much impact on blood sugar, so it doesn't have to be taken into account when you are counting carbs.
Have you read the Atkins book yet? Not sure where my copy is, but I do remember that they had lots of information and recipes in there. There were also some sample menu makeovers to give you an idea of what a daily intake should look like.
It is hard to do, but once you get into the habit, it is totally worth it. I struggled for 3 months to lose 7 pounds--I spent most of 2 months gaining and losing the same 3 pound--as soon as I cut carbs (50-75g net per day) I dropped 5 pounds the first week, then over the next 3 I lost another 4 pounds.0 -
http://www.atkins.com/Program/Overview.aspx describes the Atkins diet and its 4 phases.
Learning to love fats and oils is the most important part. If you currently eat 180g of carbs then you'll be switching that to 80g of extra fats and oils for the same protein, give or take.0 -

Yes Sarah I was told by my doctor no white flour, rice, sugar, corn and processed foods. I am not diabetic but I have what you call metabolic syndrome which can turn into diabeties if I don't get it under control and lose some weight. He said I can have brown rices and 100percent whole wheat and sweet potatoes here and there.
So are you doing Atkin or no carb? would you mine being a buddy help me through this. I am also going up and down like a yo yo with 5 pounds.0 -

Youre definitely not alone!
I have extreme insulin resistance so bad that there is no 'shut off valve' for my pancreas. Ive been hospitalized for borderline Insulin Shock - the irony is that I was treated by the same doctor that I do the medical billing for! LOL!!!
This can be done. You will go through the typical "fog" for a few days, maybe a week but the key is to keep well hydrated, and take the time to plan out your meals.
You are lucky that you can still consume sweet potato, whole grain and brown rice - I still react very badly to those foods.
I eliminated (again, medical reasons) all breads, all flours, all rice, all pasta, corn, extreme restriction of carrots (once in a blue moon), Ive already been soda-free for about 12 years now... I have already been cooking with only fresh foods so that was half the battle already solved. It didnt take long for me to ditch these foods except for pasta - that took about a good month... but I found really good replacements for it and now - fast forward almost a year later, I dont even miss them at all!
From time to time, I do need to grab a slice of sourdough bread when I feel my blood sugar drop.
Ive dropped over 50# with these changes.
From the time I met the Endocrinologist with the elimination list to the next appointment which was four months later,
my A1C went from 11.2 down to 5.2
My total cholesterol began at 252, it is currently 117.
If I can do this - you can do this!
Keep your chin up and remember to take one day at a time!!!!0 -

Ok....that's what I suspected, but it still isn't NO carbs at all. fruits and veggies have carbs in them too, that is why I was asking what was said.
I am basically doing the maintenance phase of atkins. Can't remember if I did induction all those years ago or not, but I knew I didn't want to do it this time. I'm trying to stay under 75g of net carbs a day.
I eat things like 2 eggs, 4 slices of soy bacon, and a slice of cheese for breakfast...and a huge salad with 4oz of protein for lunch0 -

I have been struggling. It shoulds like I am in the same boat. I was diagonsis with this insulin resistance this April. My doctor put me on Metformin. I have been taking it but there has been weeks i have forgot to take it. There has also been times I binge on cookies, candy, cakes and BREAD. I can't make any more excuses but I know i have to get this under control.0 -

One of the things we tell the patients that come to our offices is that you must take your metformin at the same time every day with food.
The majority of our patients take it on an empty stomach which causes the gastro-intestinal related problems that many experience despite our advising them differently.
Part of the whole metformin therapy also means not having the cookies, candy, cakes and bread - you dont want to be part of the problem when it comes to this...
Give yourself one week to be totally without these foods. Throw them away, give them away, just get rid of them. Fill the house with real foods - vegetables, proteins, fats, berries, nuts, etc.
You wont kick the habit if you keep letting yourself have these foods. All the support in the world isnt going to help you with this, this is where it requires your 100% total dedication to this. You have to want this..
good luck0 -

Cramemh,
Would you be able to help me? If you could sharewhat your day menu would consist of. Right now i have been doing an atkins shake, lunch a salad with 4oz protein, dinner 4oz protein and veggies.
Thank you0 -
Are you under the care of a physician? Perhaps an Endocrinologist?
If you have been advised to have a low-carb intake, I would be interested to know exactly what they 'said' to you, and what info they 'gave' you?
Just remember that you must always seek medical-related advice by those physicians who are treating you.....0 -

I totally agree, this is very hard. I just need to cut out all the sweets I consume while Im at work, so I chose to do low carb. There is a group dedicated to low carbers, with great information and support. Thanks and good luck.0

Hey there,
I am chaning my diet to a low GI lifestyle, it basically divides carbs into different categories according to how much they raise your blood sugar levels. I know what you mean it is tough the first couple of days. I am there too right now. But I have found some great sites other than the atkins one. This one with all its links I found to be most informative: http://www.glycemicindex.com/
If you want to swap recipes or tricks along the way add me as a friend!
There will be no quitting, only a bit of whining along the way!0 -
It was my PCP that did the bloodwork. And the only information he gave me was absolutely no sugar and no rice potatoes corn and milk. I guess thats why I am so confused with what to eat and what not to eat.
First things first - your PCP did make some good decisions, but they arent very specific decisions - at least from a perspective that an Endocrinologist would handle.
I dont know if you have an HMO plan (one that would require a referral to a specialist), but you really should get more definitive 'numbers' - for example, a daily target of carbohydrates to take in, a daily target of protein to take in, perhaps have more involved blood tests to be drawn that only an Endocrinologist would know to evaluate/measure.
Good thing is - you should not be too confused, the PCP did tell you: no rice, no potatoes, no corn and no milk..
The problem here is that you left that office with no specificity - and that isnt really the PCP's fault - he/she is limited with the license to practice medicine within Family medicine and only that. Outside of that license would mean he would/should be referring you to an Endo or other specialist who works with Insulin Resistance (for those TTC, it may involve OBGYN and Endo)..
Yes - we have "Low Carber Daily Forum" in the groups section of MFP - Im a moderator over there, we have an AWESOME group of folks who follow Atkins, Low-Carb-under medical advisement, South Beach, Paleo, Primal and those that get sick of being attacked on MFP because they chose to just ease up on the bad carbs... No invite needed, just come over, click "Join" and join our discussions!
Meanwhile back at the ranch, I would highly suggest meeting up with an Endocrinologist to get a more fine-tuned picture. With an Endo, you will get more specialized care and never leave their office until you have a full understanding of what you are being advised of...0 -

I looked up listing for endocrinologist. I am going to call around and make an appointment. So i can better understand what I need to do. I also started taking my medformin at 7 with dinner. Which I have to say my belly has not been getting up set.0 -
I am not doing Atkins but I am doing lower carbs/higher protein diet. You are welcome to friend me or look at my diary. Be wary that a lot of people will tell you you can have carbs just use moderation and not even listen to you, so my advice is skip their comments and move on to people who actually listen to your questions and/or comments.
Good luck with the medications and diet changes, it can be hard but stick with it!0 -

That unfortunately is very true...0 -
