People seem to be all over the map about this. Some say eat back all your calories, others never do. One has to find what works for one's body. Personally, I don't eat all my exercise calories back, simply because I'm older, and on the small side to boot. I eat maybe half of them back, if that. It varies day by day. But I do average eating 1400 calories from day to day. I've been here since early May, and aiming to lose slowly, as I don't have a lot to lose. But MFP HAS been really useful for tracking calories and instilling it in me that on some days, some foods are calorically too costly for me to eat save for maybe once a week or so. Then I budget them in. On an everyday basis, when I see a tempting treat - I'm thinking "this costs too much" or "I really don't need that", and move along. It's helping with that chocolate tooth LOL!

Depends on your tracking method. I don't eat back my calories nor log exercise because I use the TDEE formula and it takes my daily activity + exercise already into account. I personally don't agree with MFP's method and thinks its way off and not productive thus causing alot of confusion within the community. This site is best used as a tool after you get educated from a knowledgeable community like www.bodybuilding.com. There are some people who are here in this community that are very educated but most of them are from/part of BB's community.

And that calorie count of just swimming with the kids was estimated how exactly?

You didn't burn that much. Triathletes on the 2.4 mile swim part of the race don't burn that much.
  • I would say if you are not hungry then don't bother. I agree with the above post that the calculation is most likely off. IF you get hungry then have a small snack.

I'd consider it profoundly unlikely that you really burned 600 calories/hour swimming with the kids. That being said, it IS a good idea to try to hit 1200.

I also jogged for an hour like I do everyday so not all that is from the pool

Do you want to lose weight faster or eat more? That's about the only question. If you're not eating under 1200 calories you're fine.

Overestimating exercise calories has got to be a huge problem for people here following the "eat back" plan. If I "ate back my exercise", I'd be around 100 calories over my TOTAL expenditure and would gain weight. How is that possible? Because I aim for 5 miles a day of steps with the Fitbit, which is around 500 calories of "exercise" (technically, by a database), but a lot of that is just part of a normal day and is part of the (BMR times sedentary activity factor) estimate.

I would eat as much as I wanted and not worry about the rest. I don't think I'd believe a number that high.

Do you always have huge burns like this? I believe in eating your exercise calories, as a general rule; but if it's just one day, it doesn't matter.

According to your diary, you either have a severe eating disorder or you're doing incomplete logging. Hopefully the latter. Regardless, eat it* back.

*"it" being your exercise calories, regardless of what they may be. 6 hours of moderate swimming (not simply "being in the water") burns about 2000 calories. That's a lot of swimming.

I log everything I put in my mouth. I ran for an hour and then went swimming for 3 hours so How are you getting 6 hours? Yes I was in the deep end treading water and moving almost the whole time. I don't know if the eat more to lose weight plan really works. And yes most of my days in the summer time are likes this. I do not feel I have any type of eating disorder just trying to lose weight I weigh 206 lbs. I do not feel bad at all I don't feel that i am risking my health at all. I just eat when I am hungry. Why would you say I have an eating disorder

Well, the clarification in that statement was the "or" - so it may not apply.

The group and method should really be called Eat more than current too little amount but less than previously to lose weight more consistently.

Most people have no idea how many calories they used to eat to maintain their previous weight or slightly gain, but they see 1800 compared to 1200 and freak out, when they should really be comparing 1800 to 3500 previously.

I would say for you, eat a lot of them back. I'm not sure how you aren't hungry... most days you net negative calories which is definately not healthy. I didn't see a day where you had more than 1000 calories to eat in a day.

I'm sure the previous poster mentioned a possible eating disorder due to the amount of calories you eat in a day. The last week and a bit has been less than 1000 calories per day... normally netting negative calories. The poster also wrote that it may be incomplete logging

Wow, you are a phenomenom. I wish I could only eat 800 calories a day, not beeing hungry, and than burn more than 1000 cal in activities. You must lose a lot each week.

If you've already made up your mind as to what you're going to do, why bother asking for advice?

And something is extremely odd with either your metabolism or your tracking. Even with no exercise whatsoever you're tracking over a thousand calorie deficit every day, the exercise just adds to it, and then losing a pound a week?

See how you've managed to slow your metabolism down from what the math easily says you should be losing.

Because normally the activity level the deficit is taken off of is very under-estimated.

All that restriction for only 1lb weekly. Perhaps you like losing slower than needed. Oh well.

You got some great suggestions and advice being given on here by ones I recognize getting over a stall you'll probably end up hitting at some point. Just don't go the wrong direction in an attempt to fix it and make it worse, the recovery can then be very discouraging and lengthy.

I would look in to Anorexia Athletica- you don't have to be skin and bones to be developing an eating disorder. You can be on your way at 206 lbs, and training your body to function on negative calories is a start. I'm not your psychiatrist, so I have no right to diagnose you, but I would consider educating yourself on the possibility that you could be going there.

I don't aim to eat back my calories burned but then I'm trying to lose a gang of weight overall. If i'm hungry or want an extra snack at the end of the day I have the room for it, but i did not sweat over 2hrs in the gym or in the park solely to eat it back. I say def let it go especially if you're not even hungry

I think that is a lot of calories to have extra in a day so I think you should drink or eat some of them back, but if you're not hungry you should not force yourself to eat unless you barely ate today. I think it mostly depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to loose weight I think you should eat some of them back. If you are trying to gain muscle I think you should eat or drink as much of them back as you can and try not to get that far off your net calories again. However, if this is only happening once in a while I don't think you should worry about it.
