    I am not a country music fan by any means, but several years ago I visited a friend in Houston and we went to the rodeo and Trace Atkins was playing. It was the first time I heard that song "You're Gonna Miss This" and it made me cry. Reminds me of how all of the struggles we endure shape who we become.

    Another that always gets me is "Unplayed Piano" by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan.

    It Is Well With My Soul - Horatio Spafford

    This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871 at the age of four, shortly followed by the great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer). Then in 1873, he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre, but sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone . . .". Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.

    I lost a lot of friends to AIDS and this song always makes me think of them and cry.

    Tried to explain it to my daughter, Holland, once, when she was about 11. We were driving home. My father had just died. I tried to explain the line "I'd trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday" by relating it to how much my Mother missed my Father. Couldn't finish. Got a lump in my throat and teared up. Just like I do right now. She looked at me like I had another eye growing in my forehead.
