11 days in and I'm sooooo sleepy!! is this normal?

Hello fellow MFPers I am 11 days into the my fitness pal and gym, and soooo tired!!! Is this something that is normal? anyone else go through this? I work out three days a week at the gym doing 30 min cardio *usually elliptical* and stregnth training *alternating between upper and lower body* and ole fashioned situps/side sit ups,swim kicks etc and stretching. and I work out three days a week at home practicing martial arts for 30 to 45 min * kata/ punching bag etc*
I am usually always under my calories for the day too.

Are you eating your exercise calories back? They're fuel for your body and work outs?
How many day's total are you working out a week? Are you giving your body a rest?
Are you hydrated?0 -
Are you sleeping enough? :-)
Perhaps your workout is too regular - try changing it up a bit, or try and go for longer. And future_runner is right, without seeing your diary, it's hard to advise further!0 -
yeah i co-sign on what everyone else said...
but i was going through the same the first couple weeks, i was so obsessed with stay slightly under my daily intake and working out without fully putting the fuel bacj, that i felt more tired and sore than usual... i lost 5 lbs within my first 2 weeks but it wasnt worth the fatigue, so since then I've been listening to my body and refuelling after my workouts, my weight loss has slowed to about 2-3 pounds every 2 weeks, but I feel good!0 -
hydrated: YES! I suck down 1/2 my bodyweight in oz.
Sleeping: nope! still nursing my 19month old and he always finds his way into my room every single night So I sleep but it is interrupted..
calories : I have been anywhere from 200 to 800 calores under * that is from what I earn from exercising. is that bad? Im still new to this site and not sure if I should eat so much LOL * unless it truly helps that is.
as for the diary.. not sure how to show you maybe I will go into settings and see what I can do, I am open to ANYTHING to help me loose this stinkin weight!0 -

not sure if this was right or not, but upped my activity level to high due to nursing, not sure what to do about breastfeeding. any other mammas figure that out?0

Perhaps you are not getting enough b12 and/or iron. Maybe try some supplements to aid in nutrition?0

In the Food Database I believe there are breastfeeding entries that will give you negative calories the same way exercise does. Honestly, if you are breast feeding and doing cardio and strength at the gym several days a week, you might want to consider eating a little more, you could be tired from simply not enough food, It's good you have upped your activity level to active, esp if you are not sleeping. Also, you might want to consider some multi vitamins/minerals and iron, we often take vitamins when pregnant but stop when we have had the babies, but your body is still nourishing another person, so a dose of vitamins each day might help...It's a new journey you are on, and I think its normal to feel a bit tired at the start, but try upping your calories a little more, and see where you are, you can always lower them later, just don't net less than 1200 esp while your breast feeding! Otherwise your diary looks good.0

But honestly you should eat a little more. The whole "eating exercise calories" is big debate on here, so let me get it started lol. Personally, I don't eat them back each day but I have a cheat day so I eat a lot of them back on that day that I compiled through the week. I also don't eat all of them. My hrm is broken so partly because I am guesstimating but also because I have enough energy based on what I do eat. So play with it and see what works for you. May e eat back most of what you burn on a cheat day, or half of what you burn on each day, or some other way. Play with it, find what works for you. You might want to consider mixing up when you work out. You'll figure it out! Good luck to you :drinker:

thanks so much! I just started taking a multivitamin yesterday and I think your right I am not eating enough.. going to add a healthy low fat snack before bed because usually after dinner *two hours or so* I AM STARVING!!! I just suck down more water and try to ignore it but I think I need to eat!0

LOL When I was breastfeeding I was eating liters of yoghurt! All those middle of the night feeds and I sat there with a little tub of yoghurt! Breastfeeding made me starving!!!!0

I was really sleepy and really hungry my first week! I adjusted my calories a little bit and it helps. I was also told that if you take a multivitamin you wont be as tired....0

Looks to me (by the diary of the last week) you are not consuming enough calories. Up your protein, that might help.0

Your meals are looking very heavy, which might be leading to post meal food comas versus feeling fab after feeding. Try adding in more raw, natural foods to balance the meats and processed foods. Now and then you have a piece of fruit or a few leaves of lettuce, but I've not seen any decent intake of raw fibre, which helps keep that metabolism flowing and the natural sugars keep you energised.0

The sleep thing I can't help with. You are slightly undereating and you are pretty consistenly under on protien. Add that to a new exercise program where your body will want more sleep and getting interupted sleep and it all makes sense. Eat up to your goal and get a little more protein and get whatever sleep you can!0

yep. I actually had a week about three months into a solid routine where my body decided it was time to sleep after coming home from work, after which I'd wake up at around 10 p.m. or so, then sleep till I had to start my day again at 6 a.m./it's a cycle, it'll stop.
p.s. be sure to nourish and listen to your body well, new momma!0 -
A suggestion might be to add some healthy between-meal snacks. If you want you can cut back on your meals a bit,but do try eating when hungry (within your limit). You may be getting very tired when you get hungry and more tired fighting hunger waiting for a meal, then eating a large meal, which tends to make one tired too. Aim for three balanced meals and three snacks each day. Each meal and snack should have some protein in it. If your fatigue lasts for a long time, please have your doc check your potassium levels. (((Hugs))) nursing takes a lot of energy.. but sooo worth it0

For the breastfeeding, you can go to the MFP food database, type it in, and you'll get different levels to take into account. If you are nursing pretty often still, you are able to earn back 500 calories per day. It will deduct it just like a food, including your protein by they way, so you'll need to increase your protein levels as well. And it looks as if you're coming in pretty low on your protein each day as it is, which could certainly be sapping your energy levels. Nursing requires energy and your body might just be having a hard time adjusting. You don't look as if you are getting enough protein in your diet. Try the 3 meals and 3 snacks per day as someone else suggested.
Also the nursing mom's group might also help! Good luck hang in there!!0 -
I didn't read all of the replies, but used to get really tired too, until I figured out I was having a carb crash. Take notice of the mornings when you have the frosted cereal versus eggs. I used to want to pass out after having sugar in the morning, I was so tired.
Increase the protein, decrease the refined sugar and see if that helps. And you should definitely be eating all of your calories with breastfeeding.0 -
I'm sure the kids have a lot to do with it, but I would try eating back your exercise calories. I know I feel SO much better, now that I eat mine, and I'm still losing weight just fine.0

I am 3+ months in and still constantly exhausted. I don't have the kids to blame it on though.0
