What do you do when...

You go out somewhere and what you eat is not really portion controlled or measured. This past weekend I went to a family reunion party and all the food there was just laid out and really no ingrediants or recipies were shared. What do you guys do for putting your foods into myfitnesspal? I just kind of guess what I ate, but I really want a more accurate look at what I actually eat. Any one do anything different?

Nope, guestimate usually. It's not a regular occurrence and once you get into weighing and measuring your own food you can figure out what's in something quite well. Also, if you're really concerned or interested just ask what's in something :) It doesn't hurt and you might find you get a new recipe out of it !

Agreed! I usually round-up when in doubt. I figure it's better than not allotting enough and totally blowing it - but then again, it's not every day that I'm eating like that, so I don't really stress about it.

My aunt has a saying that she heard in a Weight Watcher's meeting - "One day of poor choices doesn't make or break your progress" - so if I have cake and pasta and pizza at a family reunion, it shouldn't set me back (As long as I strive to make better choices the days following!)

I have been struggling on the weekends. This Saturday, we went to a cook-out, so I called my friend to check what was for dinner. I filled out my journal before I left, then had a cheeseburger (no bun), some fruit salad, and lots of veggies. I stayed away from the cole slaw and macaroni salad to be on the safe side, and I brought my own MGD64. It was a birthday party, though, so i made sure had had enough calories for cake and ice cream. I also drank A TON of water while I was there. Had a great time and didn't go over my goals!

I just eat, enjoy and take my best guess.
None of this calorie count stuff is ever exact. Just do the best you can with what you have,

The only way when at any event, would be to ask the person who made the dish, how did you make it... And even then, their memory on making the dish might not be accurate at all....

It will never be 100%..... gonna have to be good at gestimating....

Guesstimate's fine. I mean, you could calculate exactly how many calories Aunt Ida's potato salad has, but I'm pretty sure it'll at least end up close to what's already in the database.
