I don't run, but I have a hubby who tournament fishes (8-10 hour)

and he is NOT the fast food type (never has been)
but he ALWAYS craves a SUPER GREASY BURGER after he's done....
(and indulges)

After doing some research, I'm wondering if his body is craving PROTEIN???

Is there something HEALTHIER/BETTER that you could suggest?

BTW- He knows I'm asking- I'm not pushing this healthier lifestyle on him, he ♥s this lifestyle change.

Is there a chocie on wher he gets the burger from, or is it just the nearest van? A good quality steak burger isn't the worst choice for protein. Maybe a chicken fillet burger instead?
  • Let me CLARIFY-

I'm needing suggestions of something he can eat IMMEDIATELY afterwards, BEFORE the cravings hit=
and something that doesn't need COOKED or KEPT COLD-
he's on a bass boat, they do the weigh-ins and it's on the way home that the cravings HIT.

Just trying to head 'em off @ the pass.
  • Hi Jill,

I'm a runner, generally concentrating on off-road runs and longer distances so I need to recover properly after a long run.

You're right that after a lot of exercise like this, your body may crave protein as it helps to repair microscopic muscle damage caused during exercise - this is why body-builders consume a lot of protein.

However, the unfortunate thing is that after heavy exercise for this sort of period of time, you just have a craving which may not be physiological and is simply for a taste - and if you've found burgers are what makes it better, this will inevitably be what your mind is drawn towards as you near the end of an exercise period.
Personally, my food intake after exercise varies greatly (sometimes I crave sugar, sometimes salt), but the one constant within 20 minutes of finishing exercise is a bottle of For Goodness Shakes recovery drink - it leaves me feeling satisfied and my muscles refuelled. Maybe buy one or two of these for your husband for him to drink after a long fishing session and see if it changes his desires for next time? The only problem is that each bottle contains around 260 calories, so he'd better have worked hard first!

This Saturday was a little different for me, as my exercise apparently burned over 5,000 calories, at which point I think pretty much anything goes!

    Hope that helps a little,

    Al

I really honestly SCOFFED @ my hubby's claim that this was a high calorie burning sport until I read articles such as this:

    http://www.bassmaster.com/news/fish-feed

They are constantly moving/standing/balancing/flipping/reeling for close to 8 hours straight and a guy the same height/weight /age as my hubby burns around 4800-5000 calories as well.
  • Jill,

In that case, get him a couple of recovery drinks, one for during the event and one for after. Not only will it help replace protein in the muscles, it will help him to feel full (milkshakes tend to do so), will replace a lot of the burned calories and will also provide a lot of the nutrients required to ensure the muscles recover quickly and with as little stiffness as possible.
