Going to the zoo? To log or not to log?

Hey everyone.

so I'm going to the zoo today to look at the cute animals and spend some time with a friend whose down from uni for couple weeks. If my profile is set to "lightly active" (Because of my work), Would you log these calories or not?

I'd probs be walking around for AT LEAST 5+ hours.

I think it depends on your daily in's & out's. I work at a desk type job (911 dispatcher, evening shift 4-12) but I am up at 6:00am and on the go all day with my kids. Housework, walking the dogs, the parks, bike riding, etc...so if it were me, No, I would not log back the calories but that is because I am on the go all the time. Now, if I sat at home in the morning doing nothing but wathcing tv and that was my norm, then yes, I would log them because they are calories burned that you would not normally burn.

similar situation yesterday happened to me. i took my son to a waterpark. went on about 20 rides, all of them requiring stairs to get to the top. we were at the park for a little more than 4 hours, it was empty, hence so many rides, and was either walking or climbing stairs the entire time, except for the 30 seconds on the way down the ride.

i don't normally log exercise things like cutting the lawn or gardening or moving bricks from my front yard to my back, so i wasn't sure if i should log this. so i compromised. i logged it as half the time under walking, and figured i am a bit underestimating b/c of both time and climbing countless stairs. seemed fair.

    good luck.

I log if it's something I don't do often. Going to the zoo would be a workout for me.

Personally, I would not. If it does not amount to MORE than what I do in a TYPICAL day, then no. I would not log it. But what I do may not work for someone else. If I worked in fast food Monday thru Friday, and normally sat and did nothing but breath and watch TV on Saturday & Sunday then yes, I would log it if the Zoo trip was on that Saturday or Sunday. But, if I worked out at the gym, or exercised some other way on my normal days off then no, I would not log it b/c it would be in place of my gym time.

Again, it is what I do because I know my body...but it may not be what everyone else would do.

    (I know I may make this sound very confusing...sorry :( )

It depends on your reasons for logging as well as the things stated above.

Why do you log? Do you log so later you can choose whether to go to the gym/do exercise or go to a movie/not exercise? If so, I'm not sure I'd replace a more vigorous exercise (say an aerobics class) with a less vigorous day of strolling. If you're using it as an "out" so that you can do less exercise that week, then I think you might be "cheating" yourself because you're replacing something greater with something (while still good) that is lesser.

If you log, however, to feel good about the amount of exercise you do then I'd log it. You want this journey to be a positive one. As long as you log it as honestly as possible (putting it down as strolling/slow walking, not marathon-running!) then I see no harm in including it.

personally i wouldnt log it - i dont log anything except traditional exercise (time at the gym, or weight lifting in my garage).
but i also would probably eat a bit more and not worry about going over calories. quite often i walk upwards of 5 miles a day with my kids, going to and from the park, etc.. i dont log that either. i just see it as extra movement that day

nah, I'm asking just because I used to not lose when I didn't eat enough of my calories, I used to eat 1500 then burn 1000 or so without realising.
And I'm still going to my dance class tonight! No matter what :)
