Runners...how far

would you drive for a race (specifically a 5K)? I just noticed that in November, there's something called the Hot Chocolate 5k/15k in Chicago, which is about a 5 hour drive for me. I have a friend who would run it with me, but it's still a pretty long way, right?

Is this crazy??

For a 5K, an hour. About the same for 10K.

    Half marathon, 2.5 hours.

Marathon, I'll get on a plane.

By myself I wouldn't go father than about an hour for a 5k, but if it's a social thing with a friend I would go a lot farther. Especially if it's a new runner that wants a buddy for their first race or someone don't get to see all that often.

Ditto to this, although I'd get on a plane for a half marathon if it was somewhere cool (I've also never ran a marathon, so my opinion may change once I complete my first one in Feb 2013). I'm running the Rock n Roll Las Vegas half marathon in December, which I'll have to fly to. It also happens to be the week of my birthday, so ya know, it's a whole vacation.

Maybe I'll do the full Vegas marathon in 2013

I think if it interests you and you have a friend who wants to go, you should go! Chicago is a beautiful, vibrant city and would be a fun place to run. Plus anything that has chocolate in the title can't be a bad thing :)

It depends if I'm spending the weekend there :)

I flew to Buffalo (my home town) for a half-marathon, but we went to Niagara Falls after.

Drove to D.C. for the Rock & Roll marathon (4.5 hr drive). BUT we stayed and took in the sights, restaurants, etc.

We also spent the weekend in Charlotte (2 hr drive) for the Warrior Dash.

I love to run so no place is too far for me, but I like to check out the restaurants and bars, too!

It all depends on the race. I have traveled over 4 hours for a 4 mile fun run and may go further for a full marathon.

For the most part, I travel around 2 hours for a race.

5 hours is too long of a drive. I wouldn't drive that unless the race was really going to be amazing!
  • I like to make a weekend out of races... Just drove 4 hours to Myrtle beach for the Diva run 5K:) Awesome time! Go for it!

I am driving about 2.5 hours to run in the Warrior Dash in August, which is a 5K.

I've driven 8 hours for a Half and flown 7 hours for a Full.

For the most part, it depends on the destination. (if it was exotic... He|| Yeah!)

For Chicago... if it was only 5 hours travel time and assuming I could stay and play afterwards for a few days... No question, I would go.

5k or 10k an hour perhaps - I don't run them very often, I can find one within 30 minutes drive most any weekend

half marathon - an hour or two - might travel for the right race/reason

marathon - have done lots of local races, have also flown to NYC, Boston, SF & Sacramento

Chicago is beautiful and vibrant i agree! and there are so many great things to see and do there!
if i can afford it i will gladly drive or fly anywhere for any size race as an excuse to visit somewhere new.
for me, running is a healthy and inspired reason to travel, and will add that much more to my experience of a new city.

also! chocolate! (and i think those races give good swag like running jackets?)

It's all about what you want. Make a weekend out of it and have a blast. Although you could probably find one closer, if this is the one that inspires you to push yourself then go for it!

I would do it and make a trip of it, especially if you have a friend going. Get a hotel room and enjoy the city for a night .I would defiitely drive 5 hous for a run. I have driven more than that just to stay up and get locked in a dark creepy place all night

The most I have driven for a 5K was about 2.5 hours (Warrior Dash). I'm driving 3.5 hours for an inline half-marathon this weekend, but I'm spending the night.

my friend and I drove 3 hours to do the ruggedmaniac back in April. but for a regular 5k i probably wouldn't go farther than an hour. i was going to go to Pittsburgh to do the zombie run and that is 8 hours but then I found one locally.

wont even get out of bed for a 5k...way too short and not worth the time or money for me. Will travel an hour for half's or full marathons. Did a 10k recently just because a buddy got injured and gave me his bib + picked me up and drove me to the event LoL

What, you don't like excruciating pain that last for about 20 minutes?

And there is that - i am so much more a slow twitch runner. I get beat up in sprints and short hard runs!

well i'm driving i think 5 hours for a 5k in september but it's a mud run so at least it's an adventurous 5k. a plain old 5k an hour unless it's charity then it will depend on the charity or if it's at a winery or someplace interesting. okay so for me i guess it depends. the 5hr drive race is a girls weekend.

I am new to running, so maybe I'm just super enthusiastic about it right now, but I would make the drive to run in a race with my friend. I would enjoy every minute of it.

Marathon, I'll get on a plane.

I'm going to do exactly that..my first marathon won't be in England, i refuse to allow the weather to destroy my day. I fancy madrid or Toronto waterfront.

And id drive any distance for a decent event. I'd take a 3 hour drive to do a really decent 5k event than one in a local park infested with 'club' runners who want to finish it in 15 minutes and care for little else except their own finishing time. High participation events of all abilities are the events I would choose.
