Overly Obssesive

Has anyone ever told you that you are too obsessive with exercising. My wife thinks I am too crazy about it and I need to take days off. I was just curious as if anyone else out there has been told that. Certain Days I think I am I will do 60 Minutes of Insanity. Run 3 Miles, and lift weights for 1 hour. I don't do that everyday but does anyone else think that seems obsessive. Its just crunch time for me right now I have a comp coming up and have to be ready!

To be honest if that is what you love to do and it makes you feel good, then go for it as long as you are healthy about it. For myself I would never be able to do all that... i mean I might if I wanted but I am happy with what I do for now. I will say if it is messing with your family life and time with the kiddos it may be a choice that needs to be made....with that being said, its with anything we spend a lot of time doing I admire your determination and dedication and wish I could have the willpower to push has hard as you do! Maybe I will one day...keep doing what you love!0

I exercise about 3 to 4 hours per day playing tennis, swimming, hiking or riding a bike.
Among other things. I like to play.
Is that too much exercise?
Most people fast to say "Yes" would think nothing of watching over 4 hours of TV.
The average American does just that - 4 stinking hours of disgusting TV.
ABSURD!
I'd rather be in the crowd of exercising winners than the herd of TV watching losers.
4 hours!
No wonder we have an epidemic of obesity in our nation.0 -
Shoot the other day I was called a gym rat because I go to the gym 4 days a week. You need to do what feels right for you. Only you know what you and your body needs. If you body wants a change it will tell you!0

I hear ya! I started my second cycle of Insanity last week and decided to add morning runs in three or four days a week (because I LOVE how I feel after a good run and because my dog is getting chubby!) My roommate just rolled her eyes and told me I was crazy and obsessive. Nice, huh?!0

Not obsessive. That other post was right. People sit their butt in front of a TV for 2 or more hours a day or on the computer for hours on end in their leisure time. Your 1-2 hours of leisure time is spent doing something healthy for yourself. I say RIGHT ON!!!0

Well, it does take intensity to accomplish something unique like that. I feel kinda obsessive, myself...but I am learning so much and need to be focused. However, husbands learn over time to listen to the cautions/perspectives of their wives. Glad you are wise in considering what she says:)0

I have been doing the same thing, but I am unemployed right now so I have made getting into shape my job. When I get back to work I won't be able to do as much. When I was working I only got in 60-90 minutes a day.0

Interesting question. I guess I would only consider something obssesive if it
1. Takes up the majority of your time, so that your relationships become secondary.
2. Prevents you from participating in family activities.
3. Requires not only a strict schedule on your part, but means that others must go out of their way to accomodate your strict schedule as well - with no exceptions.
4. Is a money drain, and affects family finances.
5. You hide any part of it (time, costs, schedule) from your spouse/family. If you can't be honest about it, then there is a problem.
These are not just critiera for working out, they are criteria for playing video games, reading too much, watching too much tv. etc.....0 -
I get the same thing........little comments at work, and home. Its important to me, and I have invited them all to come along, but no one ever does. Everyone wants to stay indoors and watch TV, or see a movie. NONE of which I want to do.
So, I will carry on. They can continue to rot on the couch!0 -

I completely agree here. If it's interfering with time with your family and they're telling you they want you back then maybe trade up some of that Insanity for some time together, but hopefully they'll compromise as well. I can be obsessive about it all but I'm figuring out that balance is probably key.0 -
I've had people tell me I'm crazy, but not obsessive. People like to make fun of me, but will admit that it's just because they "wish they cared to exercise that much".0
-
While the majority here will say that you're not obsessive, it ultimately doesn't matter. It's not like your buddies were calling you obsessive. It was your wife. Was she joking or is she expressing her concerns? Does she work out with you? Does she have to take of the kids while you work out? Do you miss dinners? Whether or not you agree with her (or whether any of us disagree with her), you need to talk about it with her.0

I wouldn't say it's obsessive at all. I know that my mom says the same thing about me, but it's sort of like a hobby. I'm like, you scrapbook, I work out. If you want something you have to work for it.0

Could we be married to the same woman?0

Always compare yourself with people you admire,
Never people doing less.
PS Just because people watch too much TV
really has no barring on whether 3-4 hours a day
is too much.
My best to you!

I live in a household that's not all about me and my needs. It's about the family as a household unit. Meaning my situation may be different than someone who has the time to devote to workouts. My kids are 6, 3, and 2 mos old, so we're not an 'each individual is self-sufficient' household yet either. My wife and I are doing a lot of healthy changes together (she's lost 65lbs). However, if one partner feels some neglect or has issues with a perceived obsession, whether it be reality or not, then something is not going to work. I've been married a long time..... if I was only concerned with how I lived and felt, then I'd be single. Some are better off single.0

I'm not obsessive, yet. Small space, so just walking and Zumba classes. In a few months I'm moving from a tiny 1 bedroom apartment, to a 2 story house, with full basement. Yay! I already have plans to make a workout room, and start using DVDs and whatnot. Then I will become super obsessive with my exercise, which is a good thing :happy:0

Depends, if your neglecting other things to workout (and maybe this is what your wife is trying to say she is feeling) then maybe yeah.
How many days a week are you working out like this? Do you have kids to fit in here too? What about time with the wife? On top of working.....0 -

Wow I am glad Im not the only one. PS I love insanity kill it girl0 -

Love It0 -
It's only obsessive if it starts to affect the relationships around you.
Missed a birthday, an anniversary or forgot to pick up your kid from school due to exercise? Obsessive.0 -
My husband thinks I'm an addict too...I work out about 5-7 days a week..sometimes twice a day!
My son has a personal trainer @ the gym as well--helping him train for the upcoming football season. I usually go walking or cycling in the early am then hit the gym afterwards for a hour or so. I'm starting Insanity on Monday (Yay) --and WILL continue my usual exercise pattern as well.
When I take my son in the evening on off days...I sneak another workout in for about 30-45 mins! My husband has major attitude when i do this
If you love what you do and you are NOT neglecting your obligations...keep doing what you enjoy0 -
My husband thinks I over do it. I work out AM and PM most days. It's something I love and it makes
me feel good about it.0 -

This^ You have to do what's right for you, but at the same time, you need to address her concerns and make sure she understands how you feel and what it means to you. Even if your mind is already made up, discussing it with her and listening to what she has to say whether you go along with it or not can make a world of difference.0 -
my friends think i'm overly obsessive about tracking my food. last night we went out and i was logging all my drinks and when i had reached my calorie limit and stopped drinking they LITERALLY were trying to pressure me into drinking more saying that i should have more and that it wont matter lol. i like couldnt get it through their heads that not only did i NEED to stop drinking, i WANTED to stop drinking lol0
-
i think a lot of people (on this site especially!) are obsessed with it.
is it healthier than being obsessed with, say, food? technically yes, but when your life is suffering because of your obsession, maybe it is time to tone it down and seek help.0 -
I make a conscious effort not to talk about fitness or nutrition around my friends - unless they specifically ask about it. It's tough, because that is the main focus of my life.0

Roommate, wife = not the same thing. If you're leaving her with your share of the household responsibilities (or even part of them), then you need to find a way to make thing more equitable perhaps. I'm single with no kids and there's no way I could work full time, take care of my home, yard, and finances, and work out as much as you. That said, sometimes I choose to let the home and yard chores slide. But if I do, it's just on me... doesn't affect anyone else.
My ex-husband had a tendency to work 16 hours a day. He wanted kids. I declined because I didn't want to be a single parent.
All of that said... I'm making a lot of assumptions here because you didn't give us all that many details. So if your situation is totally different, feel free to disregard.
All the best,
Jen0 -
I am obsessed with exercise. Sometimes I think that it is getting to be a problem. I freak out when I miss a day, even if I have to miss it because I can hardly get out of bed my body is so sore from the day before. I miss out on social events because I don't want to miss a workout. If I miss more than a day each week I beat myself up a lot.
Often, I do it because I love it. But it is starting to become more of an obsession, something that I MUST do, or else. I guess what I'm saying is that if you love it, then do it! But don't let it get out of hand because it's hard to stop. I know that I am probably doing damage on my body since I hardly give it any rest but I just can't let it go!0
