Well, that was disappointing... (female problems/TMI alert)

Every Monday/Wednesday/Friday morning I go on a run. I really look forward to these because running is basically the only form of exercise than I can legitimately say I enjoy, and everything is so peaceful and calm at sunrise. It's really good for clearing your thoughts.

... well, apparently, my uterus disagreed with me this morning. About two minutes in to a thirty minute run I started to feel like I was about to die, and at the nine minute mark I had to throw in the towel and hobble back home.

Stupid mother nature, getting in the way of my exercise plans. I'm drugged up now so I'm feeling better, but it's really disappointing because of how much I look forward to those runs. I might try again tonight if I'm feeling a significant change, but it gets so hot around here that I don't know if it would even be worth it. I'm also scheduled to do the 30 Day Shred today, and I really can't afford to get behind on that, so here's hoping I can least push through it.

Does anyone else get a ratchet thrown in their exercise plans around that time of the month? Seriously, my cramps get so bad that if I don't take medicine I'm essentially rendered immobile for the first couple of days! (And to add insult to injury, I have a major fear of pregnancy and will be adopting my children... so I'm not even getting anything out of this.)

have you tried the pill? i found that helped a lot. i know some people have had trouble with weight gain on it, but iv been taking microgynon for years and no problems.

my problem is that my stomach hates me and sometimes has bad reactions to some foods so i can go on a run and get major stomach cramps and have to limp back.

I have to skip working out the first day or two of my period. I know that people swear it makes their cramps better, makes them feel better, etc. I must be the odd one out because working out the first day or two causes my cramps to get worse and then I start bleeding very heavily. I've been told by my doctor to take it easy those first days. Perhaps I'm the wrong person to ask because I will easily say "Take it easy if need be" due to my own issues.

I've definitely been considering the pill. The weight gain factor is definitely one of my concerns, and I'm squeamish about taking routine medication that alters my body in that kind of manner. (Ironic, considering all the pain medicine I take during my period.) The pain gets so bad that I'm definitely looking in to it, though.

I have the same problem. I've always been told that walking around and light exercise helps cramps, but it really only makes mine worse. The only thing I can really do feel even close to normal is take medicine and lay down... frustrating, since I schedule out my workouts for months ahead and I hate to get off schedule.

Usually when women gain weight on the birth control pill, it is because the hormones are stimulating their appetite....and they end up eating too much, and gaining weight. If you watch what you eat, you will be fine. The pill can really help with cramps....and exercise actually does, as well.

The pill itself will not make you gain weight, it stimulates your appetite due to the hormones being introduced into your body. If you track your intake and cals you should be fine. Don't fret about taking something everyday because it will help you with this issue over time rather than you having to pump yourself full of chemicals for several days and not be able to function. maybe if you get on the pill exercising will actually help the cramps, I'm on it and if I work out after I start I feel better. Just a thought
  • When I was in HS and college I would be rendered useless for a day or two with horrible cramps and would throw up constantly. The only thing that helped was going on the pill. It helped regulate me and ease the issues. Good luck!

Have you talked to your Ob GYN about the pain? My pain was intense, and I found out after I went to my Dr, not normal.

^^^THIS. My mom had fibroids when she was younger and used to be doubled over in pain for 2-3 days every month. It's not lethal or anything but can be pretty painful. It supposedly improves after you have kids (which she can attest to), but it led to her having a hysterectomy at 40. There are also other causes for severe cramps that may require medical intervention.

I'm not big on the pill for various reasons, but I just make sure I have pain relievers on hand and try to anticipate Aunt Flo as much as possible so that I can work out once the pain relievers have kicked in.
