I am looking for a more efficient way to calculate the calories I burn during exercise.
Can anyone help? Heart Rate monitors? Etc?

I just use a simple way
Hard workout -= 10 calories per minute
So, if you do, say an insanity workout for 40 minutes, the most that you will burn is 400 calories.
Medium rate Walking = say 5 calories per minute

And then I just kinda judge everything else in-between

Ya - it is not a heart rate monitor or anything, but it is what I use - and I figure that it is not that hard off

Heart rate monitors are great - but I lots weight last year using MFP's numbers or the numbers from Runkeeper app on my iPHone.

Plus I use the numbers above as a guide for other activities - 10 cals/minute for steady running, 5 cals/minute for brisk walking and I use this as a guide to estimate cals for other activities.

Bear in mind that you will never have a truly accurate number, even a heart rate monitor is making an estimate, it just has a bit more data to base it on.

Definitely buy a heart rate monitor! I can't work out without my Polar HR watch. I've been so surprised by how much certain exercises really get my heart rate going to burn more calrories. I can burn as many calories now doing weights that really exerting myself on the elliptical.
