I wish people would STOP being nasty to others with their "MUSCLE DOESNT WEIGHT MORE THAN FAT" comments.
99% of people who post anything about that - MEAN THAT IF YOU HAVE THE SAME VOLUME OF EACH, MUSCLE WOULD WEIGHT MORE!
They DONT mean 1lb muscle weighs more than 1lb of fat!
Come on, we aren't that stupid!
EVERYDAY I see people HARSHLY ripping apart other people on this subject.
Please, REALIZE maybe they didnt mean it how it sounded, don't be so cruel!

some people like to come off as no it alls. Let it go. The rant was good because holding in anger will only mess you up. If everyone was so knowledgeable, they never would've let themselfs be overweight to begin with0
-
I agree. Kind of. I go even further and point out that muscle actually does weigh more than fat because "mass" and "weight" are two different things. Occasionally I'll go into the physics of it, but that's just me sciencing the fun out of things.0

That's all people mean when they say muscle weighs more than fat.
Some may not express the concept correctly, but that's what they mean.

I tend to notice alot of people are so negative on here! Especially if the poster is new they just treat them like crap, and are seriously mean to them if they are wrong. I'm like really? so everybody on here was a nutrition, exercise, and body building expert when they joined MFP? They were so successful on their own or with other programs that they just joined for fun? ya not. Positive reinforcement and teaching others is the best way to go about making a change for the better, not being jerks and pointing out everything that is wrong with their approach and offering absolutely no positive advice or help.

Earlier in the year when I first joined MFP, I stopped logging/coming on because of the negativity I received on threads I would make in the forum. I felt attacked and self-conscious about anything I posted (food, exercise, threads, etc). It's pretty sad when we're all her for the same thing and a newbie is torn a new one to the point they leave a site.0 -
Amen. People start acting like experts and get stuck up! We're on here to support each other - let's be happy with the fact people are wanting to change their life for the better when they sign up on here.0
-
Some people are just plain rude and mean when it comes to anything and always have to be right. It's sad, this site is supposed to be here for encouragement, but of course, people have to ruin things for others.0
-
I think the majority of people on MFP are supportive and encouraging. However I would be nervous of posting a topic and tend to respond to threads which seem positive and friendly. Having said that I was once put in my place by someone who had obviously misread my post - I was actually agreeing with her!0

I'm pretty much running on pure anger and irritability during most of the day.
I think it's why I'm such a happy, healthy, and charming person.0 -
keyboard courage
1: A quality or characteristic displayed by a person through the written word that this person would not ordinarily possess. 2: The confrontational attitude exhibited by someone via an anonymous entry to an internet web-page or posting. 3: An attitude demonstrated by someone when they realize that actions taken by them or words written by them across a computer connection will have little, if any, personal repercussions. 4: A false bravery possessed by an individual who does not possess the true quality in person.0 -
maybe people need to learn that we can't hear the voices in their heads so what they post needs to make sense in its own context.
"Muscle weighs more than fat " is just bollocks they're repeating without thinking, so deserve to be flamed. Think before posting !
The "for the same volume" argument is fatuous, they never reply to someone saying "I have the same volume but haven't lost any weight" it's always a reply to someone not losing weight - where volume doesn't enter into it.0 -
I think a lot of time people just repeat things they've read a dozen times. I've never seen "muscle weighs more than fat" (outside this site). Usually I see it phrased as "maybe you're gaining muscle and losing fat".
I've never seen "you have to eat more than your BMR" but here it's a litany.
I think that's why the "drink x glasses of water" myth won't die. People have read it a thousand times. They cling to it like it's a life preserver. If you challenge it, it's like saying the sun sets in the east. You're not at all saying 'stop drinking water' or 'stop eating over your BMR', but it gets interpreted that way.0 -

I agree. Even if someone wants to clarify another person's meaning (or offer some info), they don't need to jump to conclusions about that stranger and attack that person. There are ways of communicating and conversing that are productive and respectful. Attacks only lead to counter-attacks, they lead to arguments, not learning.
p.s. Not everybody here needs to lose weight. I joined to learn about weight training (which in my case may very well lead to a slight weight gain).0 -

Oh good lord, me too. I was just thinking earlier it's like the Pied Piper - "... leptin and ghrelin and gluconeogenesis... you need a metabolism reset... hundreds of us have succeeded this way... just follow me to this group...hormones trump physics... we're all lean and healthy and patient and self-congratulatory...come..." :laugh:0 -
I also have learned the hard way that you might as well not post on the forum. No matter what you write, someone (who does think their way is the only way and that they are always right) will jump on you, insult you, write rude comments and then say they are not rude, make fun of other poster's spelling, grammar, etc, etc, etc, It appears to be a group of people who have been on here for a long time. Good for them. I have a set of friends that I chose because they are supportive and friendly. They can tell you when you are making mistakes without a snarky comment. I tend to stay away from the forum now. It's just not worth it and the same BS is recycled over and over again. If you want to know where children are learning to be bullies? Look at the some of the parents ( or future parents, God help us!) on this site.0

Oh, I thought it was all just some joke. LOL. People are really getting mad about that? Now that is funny.0 -
Do as I did, to avoid frustration........take note of the same posters that enjoy tearing people down.....then you know what to expect and can ignore the garbage. It's like a bunch of tigers on bath salts just waiting to pounce on someone "weak". Most people on here are very positive and helpful. If you let the few that enjoy hurting others to make themselves feel better, then they win (in their empty minds). Ever notice it's the controversial posts in here that get pages and pages of responses?0
-
I have noticed there are a lot of negative people on this site. People have to be careful and not take things so personal. We are human and sometimes we don't always convey our thoughts correctly.0
-
Someone said that earlier and I was like "yeah well it DOES weigh more by volume" and she's like "no but you see 5 lbs is 5 lbs whether it's fat or muscle!!!!" Okay. Have it your way.0
-

I like this.0 -
I agree. I'm normally pretty uptight about accuracy when it comes to language, science, etc, but when people, at least most people, say that "muscle weighs more than fat", they mean that it is denser. So when it comes down to an equal measure of muscle and of fat by volume, the muscle is going to weigh more. We could get into a big, long, pointless and pretentious description of the science of the matter... but those 5 simple words are just much easier to go with, and generally get the point across without boring people.0

Okay, so don't get mad at me, (lol) but as a relative newbie, what IS the deal with EM2WL? I've been looking at their stuff, and some of it makes sense, but I don't know enough about the science of exercise and nutrition to really know what's what.0 -

I joined a few months ago, but I only started using MFP about a month ago now. I rarely post anything because I have seen how some people react to OP.
It is a shame when people use this as a place to contribute drama, and it doesn't help anyone - and it even turns new people, like myself, off from posting.
Just because someone posts something, does not mean you have to listen/follow it. I have just been reporting the post when i see someone being incredibly negative. I have reported a good 40 posts since i have started.0 -
Good post~
We need more threads like this and less 'troll/' 'who can make the snarkiest comment' threads.0 -
There's a thread asking people for their favorite ways to flavor water. I learned about a couple of great options in the thread, including True Citrus flavorings, and a site with recipes for flavoring water with herbs and fruit. Then came the posts from people who would NEVER put anything in their water, with a strong suggestion that they are Superior Human Beings for drinking it straight. One person said he felt "sorry" for people who flavor their water. There's a new thread on Diet Coke vs Coke Zero, and someone had to say that they're ALL bad for you because they cause cancer. No research cited of course, but he just KNOWS they cause cancer. Know what? I don't need their quasi-medical opinions or superior attitudes ... and the posters weren't looking for them in the first place.
And that's one of the reasons why my tolerance for the BS in these forums is limited ... I'll read for a week or two, then get totally fed up with the "experts" in here as well as the terrible quackery being promoted and quit reading the forums. I don't come here for support, I come here for useful information to keep me on track ... and most of what I read here is complete and utter BS.
I think part of the frustration people have is due to their expectations: some are hoping for support here, some look for information, some are here to sell a product or diet or opinion. Truth is, I've found it's not a particularly good place for getting support, and only marginally better as a source of information. But hey, at least it's free.0 -
I am a few months new to mfp and do get a bit nervous when it comes to posting throughout the boards. I have learned alot since day 1 and feel a need, if you will, to help those as much as I can who are new and those seeking opinions and advice I can help with. My knowledge is better than once was, but I'm not near knowledgable as most on here. I made the same statement when I first joined, that muscle weighs more than fat. I knew what I meant, but the meaning didn't take hold until I had it said back to me. It's ashame that people feel afraid to take part in the learning process. I get nervous, but I'm going to try to continue to help and post as I can. If i'm wrong, well so be it. If someone doesn't like my comment(s) and statement(s), oh well. They will get over it and move on and so will I. Yes, people shouldn't be rude and hurt feelings, but in the end it only hurts you as much as you let it. If their being rude, its their ingorance. I am going to continue to try to move on and have tried to ignore ignorance, afterall there's enough of that on facebook!
I love this post though!! We are all human and make mistakes!0 -

If someone feels the need to be a meanie pie meanie pants, they could just move on and not respond. Btw, meanie pie meanie pants is the scientifically accurate terminology. I am an expert on the phrase "meanie pie meanie pants" and I have a PhD in the scientific study of meanie pie meanie pants, and lots of peer reviewed articles to back it up and we have a conference every year in which we do poster sessions and talks to present our work all across the continent to the top scientists in our field. Yes, meanie pie meanie pants science is a real scientific field. I wouldn't want to accidentally be unscientific or resort to a logical fallacy or fail to properly use the scientific method in my conversations on mfp.0
