Name the diet and some details of the worst diet or fad diet you went on before MFP.

Mine was the Hollywood Cookie Diet- eating 4 cookies and only one meal a day for 3 days, not to meantion each box of these "diet cookies" were $20.00 each! What was i thinking??? Thank God for MFP!

  • Oh i've heard of that! Some big radio personality in my state promotes it like crazy because he lost so much weight with it. Good Lord $20 a box is just silly!

My worst diet experience was the cabbage soup diet. NEVER AGAIN!!! :noway:

LMAO. Is that a REAL diet plan?? ^^

My worst is the one where you don't eat ANYTHING past like 5 or 6pm. I don't know what the name of that plan is... but it really sucked and I couldn't handle more than a few days of going to bed on an empty, growling stomach and waking up nauseous from hunger.

I have a guy friend who has lost almost 70 pounds on that cookie diet - up here (Canada) it's called "Smart for Life"... Yeah, I don't think so. I think he's seen success with it because he was morbidly obese, so instead of stuffing an actually cookie inhis mouth without thinking about it he's putting one of those things, which I assume must have some nutritional benefit (i dunno, I suspect it's better than a box of oreo's). Now he's at the stage of being able to exercise... I sure hope he will!

For myself, when I was a teen
    breakfast - skipped
lunch - granny smith apple (with 6 laxatives)
dinner - spaghetti ( and 1 wake up, 4 dexotrol - to get me through my 3 hours of training for gymnastics)
    snack - sesame snaps

Oh, wow. I'm assuming you're better now!

For me, it'd have to be while my marriage was falling apart. All I could stomach was either sour cream and onion potato chips or bacon pizza from Dominoes.

    Then, I threw it up.

    Oh, and lots of wine.

    Yeah, a 100 pounds better :)
When I was breaking up with my last long term relationship in my late 20's, I drank a bottle of wine a night... and all I could eat was iceberg lettuce.

    Stupid breakups and broken hearts.

I'm glad you're better now! I'm much better as well.

Special K diet. I ate cereal for breakfast and lunch for 3 days before I couldn't stand it anymore.

Also, the chicken noodle soup diet. Apparently Dolly Parton used to do it. Chicken soup all day, everyday. Boo on that.

Master cleanse. Which isn't a diet.... but I did it after reading in some tabloid how Beyonce lost 10 pounds in 10 days. I was like, score!

    Not so much.

    atkins....just a bad idea!!!!
  • I once tried the peanut butter and apple diet. After about a day of peanut butter and apples, I thought I'd die. You were supposed to get "filled up" from the fiber, and get enough protein and curb your sweet tooth with the combination of the two. Yeah, right.

I did the low carb thing, took Xenadrine (back when it had the bad stuff in it), low-fat diets, and starved myself. Obviously it didn't work. I yo-yo'ed through my 20's.

I got to a point where I knew if this were going to work, it had to be done a different way than I had ever done it before. So I researched and educated myself. I found MFP and counted my calories and learned more. I didn't deprive myself but I didn't go crazy either. I learned that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. And I ate fat! Fats are an important part of your diet too, you know!

Anyway, deprivation of anything and gimmicks don't work. Being sensible and educating yourself on how the body works will help you reach your goals. :flowerforyou:

I took the Xenadrine back when it had the bad stuff in it too... I had no idea, I had just had my son and was looking for a quick fix. Not smart on my part. I've tried all the brand name food diets... slim fast, special k, nutri-system (yuck!), lean cuisines-- anything that promised quick fixes, I tried. They all left me hungrier and led to more binges in the end. I read book after book... the list goes on. Did the starvation/anorexia thing. My mom did the cookie diet back in the 90's. The trouble with those are, if you're like me and her and you love sweets... you can't just stick with the suggested serving. It's too tempting. Oh, and I did the mastercleanse only 1 day... GROSS.

It's taken a long time to realize that I can't do what I've been doing to my body. Sometimes I still catch myself, but I have my mantras.

My dad's famous saying if we didn't want something was "You must not be hungry then."

I tried a Jello diet when I was 15. Needless to say that didn't work.

sounds like one my mom tried to get me to do... eat these "fullness" bars before every meal with a full glass of water, and the fiber and water make you feel full. Um... who was this designed for? Because each bar was more than 300 calories!

Still not as bad as taking Hydroxycut, though. I never took it for more than a few days, and never at full dosage, because it made me feel dizzy and hyper. My mom still wanted me to keep up with it after they found out about the liver damage! :headdesk: Thank goodness for MFP!
  • Slimfast. I was hungry all the time and had bad gas that smelled like the slimfast before it went in. Nasty.

  • For my husband, Adkins was the worst. For me, a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and a sensible dinner. HA HA How can someone possibly make it to dinnetr on 2 shakes! And if they do, there won't be anything sensible about my dinner!

I remember my friend and I doing that in highschool! We'd try to eat as less as possible and end up binging for what seemed like days, LOL.

oh i have another one, along with the hollywood cookie diet, i decided to buy another product by them, which was the Hollywood 48 hour Miracle diet or something like that. You just drink this bottle of this diet juice stuff for 2 days, and they say you could lose 10 pounds, i cant believe i believed them! BTW i only lasted until the end of the first day because i had horrible cramping from not eating. obviously! lol

They make it sound sooo tempting! Hehe. I remember when that one first came out-- the hollywood juice diet. I just wondered how I was gonna stay full on that little bottle of juice. ;)

When the ECA stack was in all the popular diet pills I was so amped up and wired I couldnt eat- I would be hungry but everything would sound gross. I probably only got about 5-800 cals in a day, and it was usually in lunch meat all day and margaritas and chips and salsa at night LOL- ahhhh my twenties... I lost a ton of weight, but it came right back when I dropped the diet pills.
  • Remember Metabalife? Before the stopped putting the "good" stuff in it. Almost gave me a heart attack. I'd take it as soon as I got up and I was sooooo PUMPED all day long. I could run circles around myself, and I'm sure I did a few times. The girls at work all took it too. The company was boomin' while we were on that stuff!

Not that I'm promoting the "good" stuff. It has very bad consequences. But at that time it was like the miracle pill.

I did metabolife when I was in highschool. I also continued drinking soda. Caffeine plus more caffeine plus MORE CAFFEINE = shaky, nauseous, dizzy, irregular heart beats... it wasn't good.

Also, I think weight watchers is a good idea in general, but it doesn't teach people everything. That's why people will lose a ton of weight on it but then be sick. It teaches people to look at calories, fat, and fiber only. Sugar, sodium, nutrients... all of those have no impact on the point values.
  • Cabbage Soup diet, Atkins, South Beach, Slim Fast were all the worst for me. They all made me really sick!

My sister lost almost 100 lbs in SIX MONTHS by having a red bull for breakfast, a red bull for lunch, and a lean cuisine for dinner. She did this for 6 months. INSANITY! She looked sickly and pale (ok we're always pale, but MORE pale), her skin was awful, her hair was falling out.. it was terrible. I don't even remember how she figured out she was destroying her body that way.. but she is healthy now.
