Help with strength training

Hey does anyone have any ideas on what kind of workouts to do with strength training. I feel like I alway end up doing cardio because its safe and pretty self-explanatory. But when it comes to weights and machines i'm not only clueless, but intimidated. I usually find myself walking around the machines and buff bodies only to find myself at the treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals. If someone could give me some direction I'd really appreciate it.

    Hey ,

Google " JAMIE EASON LIVE FIT PHASE 1" . She has a workout plan and a guide that explains what to eat and I found it very helpful when I first started working out. It is on bodybuilding.comand it even has printable workouts . Hope it helps.

I understand how intimidating it can be to be in a gym full of buff dudes going through intense weight lifting workouts, but you should be able to do anything you want to. It wasn't uncommon to see girls doing bench presses or cable rows at my old college gym. It is good that you desire to strength train because as you build more muscle, it will be easier to maintain as healthier weight due to an increase in your basal metabolic rate.

My recommendation is to develop a weight lifting workout routine that you can follow while at your gym. Just see what equipment your gym has and create a workout based on what is available at your gym. In my opinion, you can get a great workout using nothing but dumbbells and a bench to do your workouts. And you don't have to go super heavy; just make sure you complete your sets using good form.

For workout ideas, you can go to bodybuilding.com as the first replier mentioned. You can also look at my exercise playlist from youtube - https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL90985AC6F9F9A46D

bodybuilding.com has alot of videos also on how to perform the actual exercise/movement. If I'm unsure about form on a specific exercise related to lifting and can't find it on their wepbage I turn to youtube and search for the proper form/movement there. I have had good luck so far.

    Good luck!

Stronglifts 5x5 is pretty good for a beginner and so is Starting Strength.
Starting Strength is a little bit better for athletes who care about explosiveness because of the power cleans.
After a couple months of getting down the basics you can move on to something a little more advanced.

For a balanced physique, it's a good idea to do Bench Press, Squats, Overhead Press, and Deadlifts.
Any program should contain these lifts or at least some variation of them.

What works for a man will also work for a woman. Women will just stall quicker on upper body lifts and a little bit earlier on lower body than men. They will also build muscle at a slower rate and not be able to get as large.

Here are some of the Stronglifts articles. There are plenty of other great articles/videos on form on the internet. I'd check out some of Mark Rippetoe's videos if I were you.
