Holiday and Sick Time Accrual

I just got out of my probationary period at work last month. I went to look and see how much sick and holiday time I had accrued and it said ZERO. I've been with my company for almost 4 months now with no sick or holiday time accrued! I thought surely you would be accruing holiday or sick time while in your probationary period, just unable to use it. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I'm so frustrated! I'm in Houston and its snowing (where it NEVER snows) and the roads are supposed to be getting bad pretty quickly. If you're from Texas, you know that Texans absolutely CAN NOT drive in the snow and ice - we just aren't used to it (not that any snow is sticking, but the roads are supposed to be getting icy around rush hour). So now I can't leave early to avoid ice/traffic because I have accrued any time off. UGH!

That stinks - be careful driving home!
  • That happened to me in my last job. I wasn't able to accrue time for 6 months and then wasn't able to use it for another year! It was awful.

See if you can take transit home.

It doesn't go to my house :(

For Houston being such a HUGE city, the public transportation system is horrible. No rail system at all, except for downtown. The busses do a park-and-ride system, but even that is pretty far from where I live.

Can you leave without pay, due to extreme weather?

Most employers will let you use your best judgement in regards to leaving early when the roads are bad. They can't make you stay if the roads are clearly becoming dangerous. If they do, you can most deffinately make it an issue with your human resources dept. You are the best judge for your own safety, not your employer. They can be held liable if they do refuse you for that reason and something in fact happens while you're on the roads.

Same problem here. Snowing like crazy and sticking in the Jersey Village area and we aren't allowed to leave. I've got to drive back to Spring like 45 minutes away at 5 :-(

Leave accural is completely dependent on company policy so check with HR if you have questions.

What were you told when you were hired about accrual time? I would think that is something that would be in a employee handbook.

Have you checked with the human resourses department where you work? Maybe the computer just hasn't caught up to your status yet?

Sucks, but that's life in Corporate America! Check with your HR peeps
to see what your choices are for leaving early due to weather concerns.

You may have to lose some pay but your safety is most important! :grumble:

Similar snow situations happen here in Portland, OR. It doesn't snow often enough to have enough
snow plows etc. We had BAD snowstorms in 2004 & 2008 that basically shut down the city for a week.

In 2004, I was on temp status & didn't get paid for a whole week!
In 2008, I had to use vacation time for the snow week stuck at home!

I agree with the previous posts... check with your HR department. There could be a glitch, or maybe they don't apply your paid time off until you've completed probation. It's worth a call.

Right, suck it up when its dangerous. I'm not mad because I want to leave early..I'm mad that the reason I CAN'T leave early is because I haven't accrued time. If I had the time, I could leave. When your safety is in question, I don't think it should matter whether or not you have holiday time accrued.

Also, I was just frustrated and wanted to vent. For your information, we've been EXTREMELY short staffed and I'm working at least 10 hours of overttime a week as it is...6 days a week. So I think I have earned it. Thanks.
