Toddlers and Tiaras* Grrr, that's going to bug me. Oh well.

Anyways...

I know some of you will be like "what?" and some will know exactly what I'm talking about but I just want to know what are your opinions on these type of shows? Do you think children should participate in pageants? Do you think it actually helps with self-esteem or demolishes it? What are your thoughts?

Feel free to let it all out if you are completely against it. I want open and honest opinions.

    If it was just little girls being little girls -- cute and funny, then I still wouldn't like it, but at least I could stand it. The tanning, teased up colored hair and prancing around like mini strippers is so incredibly inappropriate that I don't think a word exists to describe how wrong it is.

    I've never been able to watch the show for more than five seconds, but I've seen clips on The Soup and in previews while watching something else and it's disgusting. Those parents are mentally ill.

    I think its wrong and sickening. Why do they need to push little girls in a highly sexualised way? Porn for Pedo is highly acurate.
    In all honesty the parents should be tarred and feathered......then maybe shot....

    It is exploitation. Those kids don't WANT to do pageants. They WANT to make their mothers happy which is characteristic for this age group. And the moms are using this desire to live vicariously through their children. I was watching a show the other day and the little girl from that show was on a talk show doing her "Daisy Dukes" routine. She wasn't doing anything but parading around in skimpy shorts and a cut off top imitating her mother. The first thing I thought was that she is grooming her to become a stripper. It's truly disheartening!

    I let me daughter participate in what is called non-glam pageants. Meaning there is no makeup, no fake nails, teethe, or anything else... Its just the girls in nice dresses/gowns.

    I think that if you start a young girl wearing make up and all of that other stuff, it is sending the wrong message...


    You are basically telling them to win, you have to hide who you are, so in reality you are not good enough. You have to be this false, fake looking girl to be noticed... If yo0u go down that road, it is very hard to come back... I think all children are beautiful in their own way, and should not need make up, wigs, nails, fake teethe, or super skimpy swim suits in order to feel loved. A good case in point.

    A lady i know here in TN bought her daughter a swim suit, her daughter is 6 years old, mine is 5 years old. She messages me on face book and says, I have a great pageant swim suit if you want it, I bought it for my girl but it doesn't fit. I said I would look at it..(I am very strict on my girls swim suits) So I look at it, and it is a 4t, He daughter wears a 6/7 in clothes... I said I guess it doesn't fit, this is too small for my girl too... She said, no it isn't too small, it wasn't tight enough... And it didn't hug her in the right places.

    Another thing,

    When you put young girls in skimpy outfits, that are skin tight, you are giving them the ok for sexuality. not only that, you are providing lots of eye candy for the perverts out there...


    If you can not tell by my post, I am against the the full glitz/glam pageants, but I will support my daughter in non-glam pageants, as long as it is what she wants to do, but she knows that she is still number one in my life regardless.

    It's Mom's who are past their prime trying to live vicariously through their daughters. They set ridiculously high expectations on what beauty is and deprive these girls of a normal childhood.

    Might as well be child abuse.

    I think they're ridiculous. The little girls look like *kitten* all dressed up in slutty clothes and wearing more makeup then I do on any given day.

    I dnt like the fact that they're so young. I feel like their mothers pumping up winning and when the little girl loses it breaks a piece of her self-esteem. I think it's raising these girls to have a distorted view on what beauty is.


    What REALLY irks me is that 9 times out of 10 the mother is frumpy and spending every dollar they have to do those things. Why not save that money for your kids future? Smh.

    My views arent as strong as other peoples, but I have seen the shows, and the kids are just spoiled brats, and most definitely are NOT going to grow up to be well-rounded individuals!

    This. Plus, the toddler's behavior and attitudes are appalling. Can't imagine letting any child of mine act like that. The mothers are another story. Always push, push, pushing. God, don't get me started!

    agree with above I find the whole thing disgusting. whats with the false hair, false nails , fake tan and eyelashes and even fake teeth !!! What happened to being natural? what a way to bring up your kids!

    Those children behave that way because of the parents, not in spite of them. They aren't "allowed" to behave that way. They're encouraged.

    I think it could be fun if the kids didn't have to dress up like adults! Why can't they just participate in a pageant and be a kid???

    It would only be okay if it was something that the kids WANTED, but so many of the mothers seem to be living through their children & putting pressure on their kids to be a certain way. Also, I can't stand watching this show because all the children seem to be spoiled princesses...

    Although Honey Boo Boo Child's catch phrase, "My go-go juice gonna make me win!!!!" has worked it's way into my pre-race ritual. :drinker:

    I, personally, do not care for it just because (I am a mother of 2 little girls) I think little girls should look like little girls rather than plastic. However, if the child enjoys it and WANTS to do it, I'm fine with it. My bigger problem is the mothers who push their daughter into it against their will.

    I feel for those kids. It's really disgusting how people get away with mentally/psychologically damaging their kids - but it's all OK if it's for fame, success, or money. Completely opposite from the honest country life where you just do your chores and be yourself and that's enough. If/when we have them, my kids will be more likely parked in front of a game console or out caring for our animals than anywhere near a catwalk. It teaches them the wrong things are important. It has nothing to do with character building or morality. :/

    *Fragging someone in Halo, however, teaches them excellent depth perception and grenade-lobbing skills which will be essential as an adult. :D

    I couldn't have said it better!

    There's plenty of time to do all this crap as teens and young adults. Little girls can dress up, play little miss make up and go to dance class, but there is no reason for it to be a competitive sport, with them all on display.

    I actually think its really disgusting.

    I saw that kid on Anderson last week, 'holla for a dolla' was also the poor childs favorite saying...stripper in the making... one of the moms actually dressed her 3YR OLD!!!! as Pretty woman prostitute

    I know what you are talking about....and NO....i am totally against that type of thing. I think it takes away a childs childhood - because they are constantly being pushed to be better than the next child, they have to get all dolled up. It just makes me feel sad for the child.

    9/10 i think its because its what the parent want - not what the child wants. Yes, some children feel they have to compete, but not in that way.

    It's sickening. The same goes for childs clothing in general - too many clothes are being created with the model or teen in mind - you know - low cut tops, short skirts, heeled shoes etc. It just gives the wrong message out to the sick men out there.

    Let children live their childhood.

    Just for the record - If I had a daughter that wanted to join some kind of pageant, i would whole heartedly discourage. Tell me I'm wrong if you must - but I do not agree with children getting plastered in makeup, made to train for hours on end, and feel so much pressure to compete against another child. There's enough competition / peer pressure in a childs life as it is without having to go down that road.

    The pageants on Toddlers and Tiaras--no. Those are horrific.

    BUT some pageants I'm totally cool with. For example, my friend Amber competed in pageants from about age 9 or 10 until last year when she was crowned Miss New York USA 2011 and ranked in the top 10 in the Miss USA pageant. She never did any of those creepy dance routines, or weird glitz pageants, hers were actually scholarship programs and based on poise, and interviews, etc. She has a Master's from NYU and while in grad school was a pre-school teacher for special needs children. The girl is EXTREMELY smart and accomplished, and gained a lot of her confidence (and paid for college) via pageants. She grew up in a trailer park and worked at Sonic when we were in high school to pay for pageant gowns, and the gown she won the Miss New York USA pageant in was a second hand dress she got at a consignment shop--she did it all for herself, not because her parents made her. She worked hard.

    So I'm not totally against the world of pageants, because I do think they can open doors for young women BUT it depends on the particular pageant circuit. Those creepy glitz pageants with overly sexualized children doing trashy dance routines are sickening to me! I will admit though...sometimes I get really sucked into that show and can't stop watching...like a horrible train wreck.
