Fearmongering speculation. That report originated in a conservative American magazine.

    Postscript: Not Muslim. Just rational.

If it would make political points our great leader would send in the SEALs to protect them.

While I don't believe that the new Egyptian government would sanction such a thing... I wouldn't put it past the fringe groups to try.... seeing as it has already been reported by the AP that fringe muslim groups are destroying ancient sarcophagus because they represent idolotry.... however, after the thousands of years of surviving looters already, I will be surprised if anyone destroys the Egyptian monuments.

I thought the same thing and considered the source but I must say that my first thought when the new regime was voted in was that the pyramids and Sphinx would be destroyed. I am just happy I got to visit Egypt a few years ago before all of this turmoil.

The new Egyptian government is the Muslim Brotherhood. It IS a fringe group. That said, I think they are playing the media on this one.

I'm more concerned about what happens when they finally pick a fight with Israel.

The Muslim Brotherhood is much more savvy than the Taliban (who destroyed the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan). They know that a large part of Egypt's economy is tourism and to destroy their number one attraction would hamstring them. Not to mention the National Identity angle.

    LOL

Yes, because (taken from the article) dumping "massive amounts of wax on the pyramids, turning them into disfigured blobs," is an extremely logical, practical idea. Somehow I don't see this as at all real.

Wouldn't that devastate the Egyptian economy given that a large portion of it is tourism??

The Taliban destroyed ancient, very famous Buddhist statues in Afghanistan and I believe I heard something recently about something similar happening in another Muslim country recently. I don't remember which, but I believe they were destroying Islamic symbols from a sect the government didn't like.

    I hope you're right.

What does it matter? Unless you are personally benefiting from it, it should not have any impact on your life, other than if they do, you may never get to see them....

I'm an art lover and pretty well-versed on Egyptian history and I think it would be a major shame to lose them or anything like them. I hate to see such icons destroyed. Generations will never have the opportunity to see them or study them. They are an important part of world history.

The world is not as big as it used to be, my friend. As a business student, I can tell you that the devastation to the Egyptian economy WILL impact the global economy which everyone is sensitive to.

The pyramids are an important history artifact in the line of Egyptians. The buildings are important to people all over the world to understanding how humans were back then. They are still examining and finding new items every day. I can't believe they would want to remove them, no matter that Islam wasn't around in the BC's... and that is just ridiculous anyway. Islam is a very accepting religion of other religions.

    Honestly...? Seriously...?

I'm Egyptian AND Muslim and this is so utterly ridiculous to me.

As aforementioned, the source isn't quite, ehem, reliable.

That being said, do you realize the state of the country? I think the president is much more focused on setting up a proper and stable government, then dealing with the officials, then fixing up the dilipidated areas of the city, then establishing trust between civilians and government before even considering demolishing the pyramids. Also...I can pretty much guarantee that this won't happen. I mean...seriously? Lol.

True. But I would hope they have more sense than the Taliban.

It mattered enough for you to comment.

That being said, it's history--it's art. It remains a puzzling, majestic feat of human triumph during a time we are still trying to fully comprehend. Beyond that, as mentioned before, it's a part of the Egyptian economy.

The article seems like media sensationalism, especially considering the source..."The Christian Post."
