I am surprised to see so many people still posting.... almost midnight here?? I have heard that a person needs at least 7 hours sleep a night .....wards off weight gain, heart disease, diabetes and a host of other health issues.....how many hours do you tally a night and do you think it makes a difference?

I get between 3-5. Even as a baby I never napped and in High School and College lived on 4 hours.
I really think it depends on the person. I feel better with 4 hours than I do with 7-9. When I get "normal" hours I feel sick.0 -
It might be midnight in your part of the world, but this is an international forum - it's midday here and I'm wide awake!
I think the hours of sleep you need is an individual thing - for me, about 7-8 hours minimum is ideal to keep me feeling good and able to do all the things I want in my day.0 -
You mean lack of sleep? All I know is working night shift added some pounds on. Your body wants to naturally shut down and since sleeping isn't an option the only way to refuel is to eat. Granted it could be something healthy but it still screws things up. Also,you are still hungry in the morning when you get off of work just as if you were not working. I am finding it difficult to manage to stay on track the nights I work this shift. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. Thanks!0

I get like 7 hours. I try anyway. Some nights like tonight, i am up but know that I shouldn't do that, but I am a wife, mother, and caretaker and sometimes I like the late nights because they are for me.
I do thinks it makes a difference. You burn calories in your sleep still that is why i try to get to sleep on time.

The QUALITY of sleep makes a huge difference to me. A good night sleep with very little tossing and turning is 7 hours. Melatonin has been my saving grace to get a great night sleep,,,! Highly recommend.0

Seven really is the lucky number - at least when it comes to sleep.
Regularly sleeping less than seven hours a day is linked to an increased risk for heart disease, say researchers at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
But don't assume that more sleep is better: The researchers also found that regularly sleeping more than seven hours a day is associated with increased heart disease risk.
They published their findings in the August 1, 2010 issue of the journal "Sleep."
The researchers followed more than 30,000 adults, all of whom were healthy at the start of the study. They found that short and long sleep duration were associated with increased heart disease risk even when they controlled for age, sex, race, ethnicity, smoking, alcohol intake, and other risk factors.
Adults who slept less than five hours a day (including naps) were more than twice as likely to develop heart disease. Those who slept more than nine hours or longer a day were one and a half times more likely to develop heart disease.
Why does sleep less or more than seven hours increase the risk? The researchers don't know.
But study author Anoop Shankar, MD, PhD, associate professor of community medicine at the university, said it might be helpful for people to discuss their sleep habits - including changes in sleep duration - with their doctors.

About 5 or so hours here (btw it's now 9:45 in Az).....I do nap after work, anywhere from 1 to 2 hrs, not every day but it happens. Sleep a lot better in the recliner than at nite in bed, no clue, lol.
I know they say one needs more but if I go to bed earlier (say 9pm), I'm wide awake at midnite.0 -
I just recently read that people who sleep 6 - 7 hours have the most success with maintaining healthy weight.
But i agree it is individual. I seem to do best with 6-7 hours per night, and maybe one night per week i can have a good sleep in.
And yes - it is only mid day where i am, so not up missing sleep posting!0 -
I need seven hours and don't always get it. It never fails that when I go a few days without enough sleep, my weightloss stalls. When I get a few days of good sleep, I have a whoosh. Sadly, my schedule doesn't always offer the opportunity for a good night's rest.0

I don´t sleep very well, so I don´t get as much sleep as I would like. But I agree, it´s an international forum. When I get up, others go to sleep.0

I need 7 hours too but have trouble getting it. Most days I sleep 4-6 hours, even if I have time to spare. My body's just effed up like that :mad:0

i rarely sleep more than six. usually it's around five, poor quality. i don't recommend this for anyone, especially since i'm dragging all day. coffee in the morning helps. lots of coffee.
i have always envied people who can sleep 8 or 9 hours a night.0 -
I have a lot of sleeping issues haha, I'll get insomnia from time to time so I'll get barely any sleep, and also I'll barely get any sleep when I have school since often stay up super late trying to finish the tremendous amount of school work I get. but for quite a while I have been sleeping a lot, when I can.. when I can sleep in I'll sleep for like, 15 hours which is probably not healthy haha. But I feel the best when I sleep that much honestly0

I need more than others I guess, I usually sleep between 8 to 9 hrs.0

I get anywhere from 7-9 hours, (usually closer to 9 I think) and I think it helps. Plus, I just have less time to get into junky snacks!
Oh, just FYI - to those of you who are having trouble sleeping - make sure you are sleeping in a DARK room. Even fairly small amounts of light can cause the pineal gland to think we should be awake... just something to think about
If you're already sleeping in total pitch black and having trouble, maybe look into melatonin supplements.0 -

I work nights, 12hr shifts, 5p-5a. I usually sleep til about 1pm, and I start my day there through 5am. I don't log it on 2 separate days and that has really helped me I think. I try to eat at 3am, something to fuel my workout and hold me over til bedtime and not anything after. I work out when I get off. Basically, I try to schedule my day the same way I would if i worked a normal 8-5 job. My hours are just different.0 -

Lol. When you posted this, it was 9:30pm where I am, but lots of people from outside the US are on here too. I have numerous friends from England and a couple from Australia.
Anyway, I agree with you, but I'm a night owl. I have a sleep disorder, and I do my damnedest to get 8 hours a night. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I never feel rested. It bothers me the way a lot of people take sleep for granted. The last time I had a good night's sleep was in 1994. Most people function best on 7 1/2 hours, but there is a small group out there who do best on more like 4.0 -
4 all nighters a week, baby. Lol but yeah, sleeping at 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. today was NOT a good idea......since it's summer my sleeping pattern is really messed up. No wonder I'm tired a lot. ._. herp derp.0

I go through different sleep patterns... sometimes not at all, sometimes 7-8 hours a night. I've been working swing shift for years so I'm a bit of a night owl, stay up late and sleep till 8 or 9. I'm on Pacific time so its not late here yet.0

I am working nights as well. Sleep is absolutely important for weight loss...and mental function...and energy...and stress, etc. Fitting exercise in on the days I work actually helps me sleep better. For me, after shift works best, but it might be opposite for you. Also helps to "graze" throughout the shift - little snacks instead of actual meals because of that 'hunger' factor....also LOTS of water0

We work late hours, home at midnight, then dinner, go for a walk, watch a little TV, in bed by 3am, but we dont have to wake up until 10:30 to be to work by noon.0

Good sleep is one of the best things in the world. I treasure my sleep. I need it to function well. I sleep in a very dark room for 8 to 9 hours a night. It is so restful.
But when I am not at home I sleep in my car between my 14 hour shifts! The city I work in is 3hours away. Been sleeping in my car for 9 years!0 -
I work overnights. But I never get enough sleep. I'm sure it's had an effect on my health, but there's not much I can do about it.0

SInce Ive been exercising I have been needing less sleep than usual. I work 6p to 2a and go home and go straight to bed and sleep til I wake...0

I LOVE sleep. I usually get 7-8 a night, and when I go to bed in a few minutes (at midnight) I'll have 7 hours in when I get up. Weekends though...man I could sleep 12 with no problem lol0
