Ok, Ladies... I'm fairly new to the dedication of getting healthy by watching what I eat and exercising. I have recently encountered a bump in the road and need some advice. You know that pesky aunt that finds a way to visit about once a month? She always shows up at the most inopportune time. I'm so stressed by her visit that I usually over eat. By over eat, I mean that I eat A LOT and none of it is healthy. Even though the constant comfort food works wonders in helping me with my unwelcome visitor, I still have to veg out the entire time. I don't want to get up to get a glass of water. I don't want to get ready for work. I just want to lay around all day. How do you overcome these two issues so that the progress you make is not lost during this time? Does anyone have any tips? And guys, if you read this and are disturbed by it.... I did warn you. :)

Just make post-it notes and write motivating things on them and put them every where so that you STOP yourself. If your child wanted to bing on junk you would tell them no, right?...Becasue its not good for you and won't get you closer to your goals. So you have to put that mom voice in your head  And tell your inner stubbourn child no.... LOL Hope that helps.

I have kind of dealt with the same issues. My cramps have been so had and the nausea so overcoming that I've been on subscribed medication (pain killers), and I've tried different types of women's contraceptives like the shot, different pills, etc. I got so hot and sick feeling that I've found myself sleeping the day away, calling off work, and have even missed special moments with the family. This hasn't happened in some time though, and now all I do is make sure I get my workout on in the morning (except on rest days) and take ibprofin for the pain. It actually has gotten a lot better!! It's a bit hard to get going in the morning sometimes, but if I push through the workout it seems to help much more than anything else I've ever tried. I give in a bit to the cravings also.. like chocolate, etc. I just try not to over do it too much and try to keep healthier options just in case (like chocolate low fat pudding, for example). It's hard, but its helped more than anything!

I totally understand! The week before my little nightmare I want to eat everything and it's usually breads I crave. I tend to give in and have atleast 1 really bad day where I go out to dinner or lunch. I give in a lot during this time and work extra hard the next week. I may not lose but I haven't been gaining either. Make sure to have some healthier options to what you're craving handy. As much as you don't want to get off the couch during that time, you have to. I find sometimes when I absolutely do not want to work out, I will usually feel better if I do. It may not be as intense but even a good walk will give you more of an energy boost. It helps if you have someone to kick your butt. My boyfriend will drag me out for a walk. Sometimes you need to not sit. Get home from work, change and move it. Once you sit, it's so much harder.... Good luck! Add me as a friend if you want.

OP I am not a woman & do not get on with my Aunts haha BUT if you know you are going to over eat, why not plan it. Under eat leading upto this time of month & use your aunts visit as a refeed oppourtunity. Drop your cals prior in the expectation of raising them & see your macros as a weekly rather than daily goal during this um...period lol. Joking aside a little pre planning should help :)

I am new on here and am dealign with this right now! PMS is a nightmare! So far I have not given in, I keep looking a picture of myself at my highest weight just a week ago, and do not want ot undo the 10 pounds I've lost this week! So that picture is my motivation not to eat, plus my Dr told me that if I lost weight my "aunt" would be less painful and would be much easier! So I am planning on that being true and in a few months when it's easier, hoping I won't need the comfort food I'm craving right now! Plus don't forget, one way to battle retaining water is to drink water! So keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Good luck!

I went on the 3-month pill a lot because of this. If I am going to go crazy, at least it is only 4 times a year instead of every 4 weeks. I have heard that exercising helps, but honestly, I usually can't motivate myself to workout when the cramps are at their worst...usually day 3 for me. So that day, the only thing that seems to help with the cramps is eating...pasta, potatoes, etc. I just try to resist as long as I can. Maybe having healthier cereals around would help? That way, you are getting comfort food, but limiting damage.
  • I used to let my favorite gift in the world be my excuse for not working out, eating right, etc... But then my dad said that there are millions of other girls who have their visit and are doing the things I'm not... So being the competitive person I am, I push through it. I just make it a competition between me and the others having their gift. Another thing is if I do eat a ton, I try tons of fruit :)

Switching to a whole foods plant-based diet eliminated all of my female issues! If only I had known about this way of eating when I was a teenager. If you cannot go that far, then just eliminate dairy products for a couple of months and see how much better you feel.

I highly recommend the food documentary, "Forks Over Knives".
  • Plan your snacks the week in advance of your Aunt ;-)

I allow myself some snacking time in the evenings during that week, and I make sure I have some Cinnamon Toast Cruch cereal on hand - I put it in a bowl, NO MILK, and eat it one piece at a time, savouring the sugar and cinnamon.....

Better than chips or chocolate, and I feel like I've had a treat, but it's been measured and I can guilt-free account for it !!

When that time hits for me, I try to change my thinking about food and water as if I've been prescribed medicine that needs to be taken NO MATTER WHAT. If I realize that it's noon and I haven't even started on my water, I make myself get up and have some. Same thing with food - in my imaginary world, unhealthy things will "interact" badly with whatever pretend medicine I've been assigned to take, so I stay away from it. Healthy foods are also "prescribed."

I don't do this for the full week, of course, but when I'm feeling the urge to dive headfirst into a bag of Doritos or Oreos, it sure helps.

Honestly, you need to stop letting your period be an excuse to act that way. Point blank and straight up. You are allowing yourself to do this because you are telling yourself it's ok since you are raggin. Fact is we are more in control over this time then we let ourselves think we are.

It's all in your mind. Tell yourself you will no longer allow your period to be your excuse, because that is all it really is...

pretty much...i feel like everything is mostly mental in life....if you give yourself an excuse, you'll think it's ok to just do it once a month...you obviously know it's a problem so just stop :) eat healthier and think about what you're doing to your body!

^^haha! funny as this is, doesn't really help with the weight loss :P
I try to just substitute my cravings for something healthy...instead of eating chips I go for a bit of bran cereal. I get some crunch but not the guilt

chocolate brownies do seem to smell a lot better when your aunt visits, dont they?? =]

however, fight the urge to eat them! don't give yourself an excuse to binge, because the guilt will only make you feel worse. maybe take baby steps towards eliminating the junk food during that time, allow yourself only ONE meal or ONE day to eat your brownies. then get back into the routine and push yourself to ignore the cravings.

Keep logging your food and definitely exercise. For me, if I make myself get off the couch and exercise I feel tons better, have fewer cramps and it helps with the crabiness and the EAT ALL THE THINGS mentality that I can get.
