Are chips really that bad for you??

So, my boyfriend is telling me that my eating exactly one serving of chips several times a week is holding me back in regards to losing weight. Thoughts?? If I stick to eating only ONE serving and they are kettle type chips or chips from Trader Joe's, are they really THAT bad for me?? I'm curious to hear others' thoughts.....

Just log them with your other food, and if they fit into your diet, you are good.0

if you can actually stop with one serving.....wow
the problem with chips is its like torture....to get satisfied you need a weeks worth of calories in one go...for me it aint worth it0 -
I don't think so, no. I'm sure you've heard the "Everything in moderation" mantra so many times you want to beat the next person who says it over the head, but there is some truth to it. as long as it fits into your calorie goal, and it makes you satisfied, then eat it.
Yeah, most chips aren't healthy, but that isn't always the case. If baked and/or made with healthy oils, eating chips in moderation is not going to hurt your weight loss.0 -
I eat full fat Kettle Chips a couple times a week, chips and salsa and as long as they fit into my day it's all good!! You have to weigh them though, it usually says 1oz or 10 chips~I've weighed 10 chips and it's normally 1.5 ozs so that is a serving and a half, if you do that a couple times a week those extra calories will add up.0

It's not uncommon for me to get one of those 99 cent single serving bags of Doritos from the convenience store near my work. I keep within my calorie allowance despite it. It doesn't hurt my progress.0

You could always try doing without for a week or two & see if that changes anything on the scale .......0 -
you can makje your own with sweet potatoes....thery are awesome and somehow it feels less guilty eating them
slice potato thin....spray lightly with olive oil
into 500 degree preheated oven till crisp

The only chips I buy are Sun Chips and multi grain Tostitos tortilla chips.
The sun chips I bring home and bag up into proper portions right away. The tomtits are saved for the weekend.0 -

I actually think chips are not that bad- as far as processing, the ones you described are some of the least processed snack foods- I would pick them a zillion times over chee-tos or fritos. Anyway, unless you are sacrificing nutrition (as in, not eating nutritious food in order to have chip calories) to eat those chips or the chips are putting you over your target macros, I wouldn't worry about it. It might make a difference if you were at a very low BF% and trying to get lower, but at normal BF% or overweight, its not going to make a difference.0

Im a chip addict. I know its hard to do, but if you stick to a reasonable portion and you compensate with exercise or cutting out something else, then enjoy! I know I do......
I have found that people (like diet gurus) who tell you to cut things out, do so because they don't like the food in question that much to begin with. Ask him to cut out something he really likes and see the reaction!0 -
yeah, he's full of it. he's just saying you could lose weight faster if you went without the chips, and that chips aren't exactly necessary.
however, your method of CONTROLLING the portions of those types of snack food will have a better effect on your lifestyle for the rest of your life. go to a party in the future, you are less likely to mung out on heaps of chips, but can still enjoy the party foods.0 -

I agree with this. For many people, the fat and sodium don't seem to matter but for others, those 2 things can be real diet busters.0 -
A serving of chips isnt holding you back - thats just ridiculous.0

I absolutely LOVE kettle chips. I could seriously eat a whole bag of those. What I eat now is Lay's Light regular potato chips. No fat! They taste like Lay's regular chips minus the fat. They are salty and delicious!0

I seriously doubt a serving of chips would make you maintain weight, unless you are already close to maintaining anyway.
The math doesn't add up. :laugh:
And nah, they aren't *THAT* bad for you...if you can eat a serving and stop. If you're like me, you'd better buy a serving-size bag or you'll plow through a full bag if you aren't careful. :drinker:0 -

A little bag of chips is not a problem. Really its just some potato that's fried in oil and salted. I fancy the Lays Classic every now and then.0

No. I eat a serving of Doritos at least once a week (sometimes more) and it has not slowed me down one bit. As long as it fits in my goals I eat it, doesn't matter what it is.0

I agree with this completely! A long time ago I used to call certain foods "evil." I read somewhere that doing that gives that food power over you and that feeling guilty about eating something is not the way to go. I stopped demonic ing foods a few years back. I think maybe it's because I buy them and he has no self control and will eat way more than one serving! LOL!0 -

As long as your nutrition is good overall your boyfriend is wrong.
