Triathlon transation help please!!!

Ok, I guess I have prepared myself for coming in last at my first Tri..., but I do not want it to be because of my transations.... I know alot of people skip putting on socks, but I can't because of the type of shoes I wear... Can you give me any tips on doing things fast???

  • I've got one little tip to start you off:

If you're using trainers with laces replace the laces with toggle laces. (type laces toggle into Google and look at the images if you're not sure what I mean.) It saves loads of time as you won't need to do your trainers up! My wife did this, very useful.

Completing it is pretty exciting and a big deal so do your best and don't worry about coming last!

    1. Practice your transitions if you can!!
    2. Not knowing what type of shoes you wear..
    - Have your shoe laces undone ready to go (I couldn't have my shoes already attached to my pedals like some people)
    - I think socks aren't that bad / time consuming - and I find it way easier to run with socks.

Not much help really - but goodluck!!
  • Than k you for our advice, I will try it all. My big problem with socks, which I have to wear is they are toe socks.... so they take a min to put on.....looking into different shoes but the race is like 2.5 weeks away not sure I will have time to break new shoes in...

Elastic laces or lock laces are a great idea as mentioned, no need for tying your shoes with these.

First: Have your transition area set out properly so you put things on in order and aren't searching for them.

Second: if you wear a wetsuit, when you are getting out of the water, unzip it and roll it off your arms so you run with it half on. When you get to your transition area to take it off, roll it down your legs a bit until you can step on it with one foot then pull the other foot out. It may take a couple of times, then do the same with the other foot. Don't sit down when doing it.

I go in this order for swim to bike, transition belt, sunglasses, helmet, transition belt, shoes (I don't wear socks) so what this means is that my shoes are sitting on my mat fully open with my helmet sitting on time with my sunglasses in the helmet and my transition belt sitting on top of everything. My running shoes are sitting behind them, again open fully but with the elastic laces they're really easy to slip on. Then it's just grab the bike and go. Since you are doing socks it will take probably an extra 10 seconds each foot i would guess but that's not a lot of extra time.

Third: Practice, find out what setup works best for you.

    Good Luck.

Practice in your yard if you can.

I put talcum powder in my socks to help me get them on easier. My transitions were my weak point in my first tri but I'm sure i'll get better!

Remember, even if you're last, you're still lapping everyone on the couch or who hasn't gotten out of bed yet!!
