I heard that birth control was going to be free August 2012... anyone know if this is true?

    Based on the Affordable Healthcare Act (or Obamacare as some people call it) birth control pills will be covered 100% by employers with no copay. I believe the same is true if you get birth control pills from like planned parenthood or someplace that is not through employer insurance.

    However I believe that it's September 1 that it goes into effect, not August.

    I didn't know this, now I'm interested in hearing more about it.

    I was paying $98 a month for my pills, which I could barely afford with all my other necessary bills but I had to pay it because I refuse to not take birth control. I changed birth controls and switched to one that costs me $10 and all it does it give me bad cramps, my legs cramp up and go numb all the time, and my period is heavier. The only birth control that works good for me and my body is the $98 a month one, but I haven't switched back to it because I can't afford it. Birthcontrol should be free for those wanting to take it, I have always thought that. There are people that have 10 kids and are on welfare getting everything for free, and I want to prevent having kids and I have to pay...it never made sense to me.

    If this is true, that is pretty nice. Reduce the amount of unexpected / unwanted births = good thing.

    I really want to get back on the Nuva Ring but I can't afford it. I'm on a pill now, and it is cheap, but free is better than cheap, even if it doesn't include the Nuva Ring.

    that is true if you have insurance, if not, then nope, not free unless you can locate a program in your state that pays for it and you qualify. Some planned parenthoods already offer birth control on a sliding scale so it's more affordable.

    Depends upon how you define free. If you mean everyone else who pays taxes is paying for it so you don't have to, and you have the right coverage, then yeah I guess it's "free".

    Its true if you have insurance, but you have to check w/your insurer to see which brands are covered fully under the Act (generic vs. not)

    I would glady pay taxes on this, because then there wouldn't be children pregnant with children.

    And there also wouldn't be people on welfare with 9 kids at walmart getting everything for free without having a job, just because they have 9 kids because they didn't feel like taking birth control or they couldn't afford it.

    Mine already is free thanks to the health care I have... Talk to your gyno or even normal doctor they are really the only ones who can be 100 % sure even if you call the people in the office can let you know or have a better idea on it

    Also I pay for my health insurance which makes the meds pretty much free so every thing might be different. If birth control is all you have to pay for then don't change your insurance otherwise if you're like me and need allergy and asthma and things for nerve damage upgrade your insurance it will save you some on medication

    We used to go through the hassle of an insurance claim, only able to buy one month at a time until the pharmacist finally told us, "Hey, just buy them yourself - it's like $10 a month and you can buy as many months supply as you want". Now we buy 3 or 4 months at a time and don't have the hassle. Not sure what you're using that costs so much, but in our experience most BC pills just aren't expensive to begin with. Much ado over nothing IMO. Just a way to freak the masses so they'll buy into more govt. involvement in their lives out of fear.

    great advice... at least now my insurance is only doing 3 months at a time saves me time and them money!

    Doubtful. You'd have to force everyone to take it. Parents (like myself) will not allow their children to behave like animals. My kids are quite aware that any behavior that does not meet dad's approval would likely result in someone walking around looking like a unicorn for the rest of their life since that's where I'm going to relocate it. I've got to brag that I've got some damn smart kids.

    What we will likely see is a widespread increase in STD infections because a lot of those who had been exercising self-control due to not being "protected" will now be happily engaged in sexual activity naively thinking that their partners are all healthy and they wont get pregnant.

    As much as I am for universal healthcare, it is more like universal 'sick' care... putting people on meds that haven't been thoroughly tested, most likely unnecessary or dangerous, and still putting loads of cash into the pharmaceutical and insurance companies pockets.

    I really hope they aren't giving the pills for free, I wouldn't trust it! Condoms, diaphragms or natural family planning are much safer. The list of side effects is frightening with the chemical birth controls. I was on the pill and patch for over 15 years and after a year off of it, my body still hasn't recovered...my hormones are completely out of wack.

    I don't think that that many kids having sex are exercising self control due to not being "protected". Maybe it's just in the town I live in, but there were 5 girls in the 9th grade pregnant when I graduated from my high school 5 years ago--- that doesn't show me self control.

    Sadly, not all parents are like you say you are. Some parents, like the ones with the children having babies, aren't responsible and they don't care clearly.

    I wouldn't want to force everyone to take it but the people being responsible and willing to take it to protect themselves should have a little leeway with it and the costs, on health insurance or not. In my opinion, I can't afford the $98 a month BC that is right for me and my body, so I am on the $10 a month birth control that has done nothing but give me problems with leg cramps/numbness, stomach pains, etc. I don't find that right, but maybe it's because that's just me.

    I don't know, I'm not the president so I can't make any of those choices, so I will just ride it out and find the outcome out from Obama eventually.

    I get some of you might not like birth control but some people swear by it like the girls who can't function during their time of month. Also they are not something you should be taking for years on top of years the doctors I have seen tell you that unless you are active not to take them unless you really have to and by that point if somebody needs them to prevent becoming a parent I think they are a great thing to have. Also I remember my doctor before I was 18 needed my parents to sign off to even give them to me.

    Agreed, completely! I'm in Canada though. If we're not covered by insurance, we need to pay. :( condoms FTW!!!! lol

    I'm doubtful, but it would be nice. Although I already have mine. I think we should be offering free IUD's. More long term and fool proof than any other birth control method except surgery, and nearly as effective!

    Exactly this ^ I'm sorry. I would rather pay for my birth control. Idk what's happening with the new health care laws exactly that's coming out, but it sounds scary as heck.

    I agree. Who's going to pay for that birth control? Someone has to make it, make sure it's given out and everything. I don't get why people think it should be free. Is it because they don't think about the actual costs that would take? If it was free, we'd all be taxed for it and then it still wouldn't be free. O.o

    To anybody on here posting about teens being active and having kids- that is not what this topic was about the OP just wanted to know if anybody had heard anything and guess what she hasn't posted anything else so if you have a problem with teens being active then I say you are terrible because lets see I am 19 so I am a teen yet I have been with my guy a long time and were getting married... so a problem with teens being active is?? I understand younger like the 13 year olds (which is very common) but how about you not use the word teens.

    Ignorant. Sexual activity is not the only reason to take birth control.
