I want to get a bike, nothing fancy but I want something to ride on the road. I have to get to the road by first going on a short dirt road if that matters.

What kind of bike should I get? I always loved riding all day long on my bike growing up and want to try doing it again.

I would suggest what is called a "hybrid" bike. Something like the Trek FX.

Cyclocross! It's essentially a road bike with wider, knobbier tires...you can take them on the road, gravel, dirt, grass, MUD! Oh, they are so much fun in mud! That blue/white/green bike in my ticker is a CX bike, as is the one I'm on in my avatar. You can also put slick tires on them if you ever wanted to do a road race or strict road riding. If I could only have one bike it would be a CX bike. You have so many more hand position options than on a hybrid, too, which is more comfortable than being stuck with your hands in only one spot on the bars.

I have a hybrid...it's great for Urban Los Angeles bike paths along paved rivers, but it has skinny road bike tires that are no good in the dirt / mud/ gravel etc.

I love my Jamis Coda, it's a commuter so a kind of hybrid. Pretty light and wasn't crazy expensive. Around 600 with tax.

I have a K2 Astral 2.0 Hybrid bike that I got from Sports Authority for about $350. I didn't want to spend TOO much on a super quality bike until I knew I'd actually USE the bike enough to make it worth the money spent lol

So far, I LOVE IT! I'm 6'2", 315lbs, and considering all that, the ride is smooth and super fast. It's very comfortable and sturdy, yet lightweight. I try to stay on the road/sidewalk because I'm afraid of putting too much weight on the tires if I went on any gravel or dirt paths or something, but for someone smaller I don't think it would be too much of an issue.

Choose your bike depending on what you plan to do with it. Mountain biking/offroading/fitness/commuting/just cruising. There's a TON of different bikes for different things and you want to make sure you get the right fit, especially if you're going to spend a lot of money on it. :)

    Good luck!
