Already a Plateau? Need help!

So.... today is officially day 35 for me and I have already hit a plateau?! Any HELPFUL positive advice please.....
Here are some statistics about me
Starting weight 274 and current weight is 265 (which Im stuck at)
- Lost 9 lbs so far but nothing lost in the last 3 weeks
- My BMR came up at 1,907 calories per day. And my TDEE is 2,699 apparently.
- MFP is telling me to eat 1380 Calories per day, which I have been doing.
- I have an office/desk job so I dont get that much exercise there.
- Been hitting the gym 2-3x a week where I do a few miles on the elliptical, treadmill, & bike.
- I've tried walking/jogging intervals outside (but I have CF and get extreme heat stroke so being outside is hard for me)
- I've incorporated jumping jacks, squats, crunches and on-demand work out videos when I cant get to the gym during the wk.
- I do not drink much water at all, HATE IT - but thought that may be the issue so for the next 7 days I am dedicated to ONLY drinking water with every meal and snack of the day and through out.
- I have a very clean diet. It contains only of fresh veggies; peppers, onions, broccoli, green beans, brussel sprouts
- I eat turkey & rare roast beef (deli meats) on Joseph's flax seed flat bread, and chicken 2-3x a week.
- Instead of chips and junk food I eat only fruit now; apples & pb, melon, kiwi, canteloup, strawberries, and pine apple.
- For breakfast I love to have either eggs, chobani, oatmeal, or special K cereal with almond milk.
So I do not know what I am doing wrong? I thought weighing as much as I do and making such crazy changes the weight would fall right off? The last time I did this I lost 18 lbs in 10 weeks and now I feel discouraged.
Scott Powell (trainer from Extreme Make over Weight loss Edition) said SUCCESS IS NOT A RACE, BE PATIENT.
But its hard, so any advice would be wonderful, thank you!

Have you been tracking sodium and potassium?
The same thing happened to me and it turned out to be my sodium intake.0 -
I don't really have an answer I'm afraid but just want to say don't give up! You sound like you're doing fab and there are other ways to measure success such as with inches, body fat %, looser clothes and most importantly how you feel!
I feel the same though, been stuck around a 24lb loss for a while now so will be interested to read other answers0 -
I suggest for the next few days knock out thee carbs (ceral, flat bread, etc.) knock out the fruits (carby as well) add in more protein (chicken, shrimp, fish, etc..) and try to knock out ANYTHING that contains sodium.. Women work different than men.. Most of us can not handle anything more than 60g of carbs and fruit has a lot of them.. As my weight lifting friends told me.. (because I lift weights at 271 and steadily lose a pound a day for the past week or so once I figured out how many carbs I can handle) If you are going to try and lose weight and you eat fruit a lot you mine as well enjoy the carbs and just eat a bag of m&ms and enjoy yourself.. You can add the fruit back in slowly once you hit your goal weight but I suggest cutting it out completely and supplementing your vitamins stick to more protein and add weight lifting.. It helps.. believe me.. Also another tip.. Stop weighing yourself and start measuring.. I maintained my weight for almost two weeks but in those two weeks I lost 17 and a half inches from my whole body0

Are you taking measurements at all? Its possible to lose fat without the weight coming off, especially at the gym. Your body can build muscle and there can be changes in water retention. Are you eating back the calories you exercise? If you set up MFP with an active multiplier, you shouldn't be tracking your exercise as burned calories. The best way to do it is to set activity level to sedentary (2200 kcal TDEE before exercise) and then track what you burn exercising, keeping in mind that estimates are often very overexaggerated and should be taken with a large gain of salt. I wouldn't recommend eating back more than 50-75% of burned calories.
Now, for this plateau you seem to be concerned with. Realize that even if your average TDEE was 2700 (and its likely far lower on non-exercise days, but we'll stick with that) you are running around a 1000 calorie daily deficit. That projects to an average of 2 pounds lost per week. You say you haven't lost in 3 weeks, but you also lost 9 pounds in the first 2 weeks. What sounds to me like is happening is that you dropped a lot of water weight in the first few days of this lifestyle change and since then your body has been burning fat to *actually* have those 9 pounds off. 10 pounds in 35 days is pretty good loss, don't get too discouraged by it.0 -
1. Eat more. Seriously, try it. But give it a good 3-4 weeks. Your BMR is the least you should be eating so try eating at that first.
2. Stop weighing and take measurements and body fat percentages, a scale is seriously overrated. Many fitness models are in the "overweight" zone for their height, do they LOOK overweight ? not at all. Nice & Solid and toned.
3. Definitely drink more water, at LEAST 8 glasses a day.
4. Pick up weights. Mold your body. The more you pick up weights, the higher amount of calories you burn when youre NOT in the gym.
5. Limit fruits and soft drinks
thats all i can think of for now, whats helped me BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT also, believe it or not, laying low at the gym (doing aerobic cardio exercises LESS) helped bust me through one as well.0 -
I believe if you don't drink enough water your body stores it. Water weighs us down. My fiance, who passed away had colon cancer and he went from 160 to 230 in a week. His body was major storing water. At the Drs office the nurse had him get on the scale a few times. His clothes didn't fit almost over night. So...Drink Water!! Your body will release it. Otherwise I think you are doing fine!0

It's day 35 and you've lost 9 lbs. but nothing in the last 3 weeks? So you lost 9 lbs. in the first 2 weeks? You're still averaging over a pound a week. Keep going. It's never linear. It comes off in fits and starts. When you lose that much that fast and if you're doing a new exercise routine, the scale will take a while to 'catch up'.0

It looks like you're doing everything right, except for not drinking water. Water is very important!0

Thanks guys!
I changed my goals on MFP to losing 1 lb per week in stead of 2 so now my calories are up to 1,800 per day.
When I was burning calories, depending on if I was hungry or not I was normally eating most of them back. Which I dont understand, when you burn calories why would you want to eat them back lol but I am just going by the guidance of everyone's advice
Also..... I have not taken any measurements but I can SEE and FEEL a change in my stomach! So I really need to take a before picture and get a good tape measure.
Have committed to drinking ONLY water for the next 7 days, today is day 3 and so far so good. Thanks everyone. Add me!0 -

FYI , got my measurement tape and body fat caliper from bodybuilding.com for less than 10 dollars.0 -
Another thing, it's confusing about my sodium intake. Because I have cystic fibrosis, and I'm supposed to have a higher sodium intake than other people - because of my disease my body loses salt all day long. So I don't have to worry about my sodium intake.
But I should maybe watch my carbs & fruits I guess. I don't know what else to do.....0 -
Change up the exercise, drink a TON of water, decrease sodium, and try decreasing carbs and see if that helps.0

You lost a lot to start out (probably a lot of water weight), and now your body needs to rest. Plataeas are a normal part of weight loss. Do you use MFP on an app at all? The carb/fat/protein ratio shows up on a tab on the apps but it doesn't here. Roughly, you should be about 50-60% carbs, 25-30% fat and the rest protein for where your calories come from. I'm not good with math and could never figure it out with out the app telling me where mine is at.
There are "good" carbs and "bad" carbs. Your fruit is good carbs, so you may want to cut back if you are eating a LOT, but don't cut them out. Here is a great article on WebMD about carbs: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/carbohydrates
As far as WHY you want to eat back the calories you burn: Your daily calorie intake is figured to give you about a 500 calorie deficit each day. This will allow you to lose weight at a HEALTHY rate. If you burn 500 calories in exercise and do not eat them back, you have created a 1,000 calorie deficit and you will see one of 2 results.
1) you will lose too much weight. It has been proven time and again that those who lose the weight at a slower rate tend to have a higher success rate at keeping it off long term. I'm not sure if this is because of how the body reacts or if it's because typically speaking, if you take longer to lose the weight, you have spent more time developing healthy eating habits which will stay with you.
2) you may start to see a slow down in weight loss. This sometimes happens if your body decides you aren't giving it enough energy (calories) so it stores up whatever it does get and doesn't want to let any go.
I am at goal now but looking back, I had a 12 week period where at the end of the 12 weeks, I weighed the same as at the beginning. I had some small losses but then also small gains. The whole 12 weeks were a wash as far as weight loss is concerned.
Try increasing your activity in small ways through out the day. It can really add up and help you. When you leave your desk for a bathroom break, go to the farthest bathroom you can, rather than the closest one. Use the stairs rather than elevator. If you have an extra minute, turn around and go back down the steps and back up again. Walk to the water fountain at least once an hour. This will increase your water consumption AND your activity level.
Lastly, think about getting a fitbit (www.fitbit.com). The site syncs with this one and it is a great motivational tool to help you increase your activity level little by little. That is what got me off of my plateau. (and no, I don't work for the company or get a kick back, I just think it is an AMAZING little gadget and what it has done for my health is well worth the purchase price)
Whatever you do, don't give up! Good luck0 -
I was stuck for about 3 weeks too. I thought I was drinking enough water but found out I wasn't. I've been drinking about a gallon of water or more everyday this week and I lost 3 lbs. I was excited!!! Your body might be holding on to water so try drinking more to see if that helps you. Good luck.0

Thanks everyone. Today is day 3 of 7 days of ALL water. All water - drinking nothing else. This is coming from a person who couldnt even drink a tumbler at my desk full of water and I am on day 3. Go me!0
