From my understanding you just need to keep your knife super sharp.
That is the trick!!!!0 -
I have heard you need to cut onions with sharp knives0

I don't breathe much whenever I chop onions. Its the aroma that is what brings that sting sensation to our nostrils which then transmit into our tear glands. While I can tolerate some onions using that technique, there are some who have very strong aromas that still enters into my nose & make my eyes tear no matter what I do.0

rub the onion on your eyes,it sounds like it wont work but it does!!! I saw it on DR OZ and The Doctors
An old friend told some guy the way to tune his guitar was to rub butter on the strings. The guy was really upset when it didn't work.0 -
Get a small table fan and set it to blow across the onions.0

I keep them in the trudge. Haven't cried in years and I chop at least one a day.0

Make a headband from tinfoil and wear it like a tiara what this does is absolutely nothing but make you look like an idiot0

Sit on the couch... watch tv.. have someone else cut them for you..0

put the onion in the freezer for 20 minutes. it doesn't freeze it to a point where it's solid like a rock but does help
Do this and make sure you have a sharp knife. A dull knife makes it worse.0 -
I've never actually cried or died from chopping onions now that I think about it. Hope it stays that way!!0

I chew gum. It works for me. :-)0

Skimmed through the first page of replies and they are not right at all. Wash the onion, just with water. When you peel off a layer there is that filmy translucent skin... that is what causes the tears. Even just having some on your hands will get you going.0

I put my cutting board under my microwave and turn the exhaust fan on - this wisps the gasses away before they reach my eyes. I've also heard chewing gum works but I don't normally have gum.
I've heard about chewing gum too, but have yet to try it!0 -

cutting onions underwater works great. i work part time at subway and i tried chewing gum and putting bread and water in my mouth and it didn't help at all. I cut them until it starts burning, then I go in the freezer and blink a few times and it stops.0

Refrigerate before cutting, hold a match stick in between your teeth (unlit, please haha), burn a candle near the cutting board.. or my personal favorite, have my husband do it for me. I am EXTREMELY sensitive to them and really can't do it by myself. Even just being near the kitchen makes my eyes burn.0

I chop onions pretty much on the daily and have never had the urge to cry... Hm.. Maybe it's because I use them so often that I've grown immune to it?0
