  • A calorie is a measure of eneryg that your body uses. If you take in fewer calories (doesn't really matter what they are) than you expend, you will lose weight. The problem with excess sugar is that it raises your blood glucose and causes your body to produce excess insulin. If you are diabetic or hypoglycemic, eating too…
  • You were pretty before you started losing weight, but you look amazing now. Congratulations and keep up the good work!! "loser" from texas
  • I felt hungry the first two or three weeks when I started counting calories and carbs in April. After about a month my body seemed to adjust to getting less. I eat several small meals a day and drink a glass of water before I eat. I also find that exercise (except for swimming) lessens my hunger for an hour or two after…
  • I quit 7 years ago. I was fat then, but gained 20 pounds due to the Big M, my new hubby's good cooking, and my lack of nicotine. . .but. . .I feel so much more healthy and I don't get out of breath. . .and now that I'm losing. . .I have even more energy. So congratulations on quitting smoking and committing to getting…
  • Welcome to the site. When I started eating healthy, I had 45 pounds to lose, and I am way older than you (61) and very short 5'2' and weighed 169 1/2. (I'll never admit to 170. . .lol) I felt overwhelmed. Once I hit 50 and the Big M, my metabolisim slowed down and I started gaining weight. In addition I remarried and my…
  • Yum. . .sounds really good. . .thanks for sharing.
  • Hi. . .welcome to the site and to a new lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise. I've been on the site for about 2 and a half months. I started losing weight before getting on the site, but this has made things much easier and more fun. Having to log in my "sins" is real motivation to stay on track. . .it's been a…
  • Good for you. . .you sound like a strong and secure woman, and we need more people like you in the world. Congratulations on committing to eating healthy, working out and getting fit. Is that your son in the picture with you? He is adorable and you are setting such a good example for him. Tell the "nay sayers" to "stuff…
  • You are a clever lady. . .using ground chicken in tacos. . .I usually get the 90/10 ground beef, but chicken would be a much better choice. . .thanks!
  • I like to salt, pepper it, add an egg and a few bread or cracker crumbs and cook it in patties in an iron skillet over medium heat until it is browned. Then I make a gravy with the pan drippings, a little flour, and milk. It's really good, but go easy on the gravy. . .great with a boiled potato and fresh green beans!
  • I've never heard of this and I've been on lots of diets in my 61 years. I have come to the conclusion that diets just don't work for the "long haul" (pardon the pun. . .I know your husband drives a truck). Healthy eating and live style change is the only way. This site will certainly provide you with some tools to lose…
  • Now that the Darth Vader walking boot is coming off, (and if the doc OK's it) I will walk or do strength training every day in September. My goal is 130 by October 23 when I go to my college reunion!
  • Thanks for sharing the "dieters" prayer. . .although we aren't dieting, we're eating healthy, right. Welcome to the site and good luck with your goals! Would love it if you'd add me as a friend. janet
  • First, welcome to the site. . .it's a good place to be. I've asked my trainer about this and she said as long as you stay above 1200 and get all the nutrition your body needs, it's OK not to eat all the calories, but she warned me that being too far under could send me into "starvation mode" and my body would start storing…
  • Hi Kara, Welcome to the site. I've been using MFP for about 2 1/2 months and have lost 12 pounds. The best way to use the site is logging in what you eat faithfully and honestly. (If you bite it, write it) Don't underestimate your serving portions. Use a measuring cup if necessary. A serving of meat (3-4 oz) is about the…
  • You are doing amazingly well in eating healthy and exercising. I know you've hit a plateau. . .so have I after losing 20 pounds. I am exercising more and eating a little less and hoping the pounds will still come off even if it's slowly. I think your Doc will be proud of you. . .maybe you should print out your log and let…
  • You look really good, but more important, you look really healthy. Doing this will lessen your chance of getting heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and add years to your life and quality to those extra years. Congratulations on meeting your goal. You are a true inspiration!
  • I'm no expert, but I would suggest eating at least 1200 calories each day so your body doesn't go into starvation mode. When that happens, your body starts storing everything you eat as fat. I've also found that going over occasionally doesn't hurt, and being under occasionally is OK too, but consistency seems to be best,…
  • Welcome to the site. I love the site: the support is great and it keeps me focused and motivated. I've lost 20 pounds so far, but have only been a member of the site for 46 days. I have been unable to really exercise for the past few weeks because I broke my ankle and injured my knee in a fall on the first day we moved…
  • Hi! Welcome to MFP. I am a relatively new member, but I love this site. It keeps me focused and motivated! Please feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like.
  • Bless your heart. . .I am so sorry, but you description was so funny I almost peed my pants laughing. . .you have a great sense of humor and that is so important in this crazy world today!
  • Welcome. . .glad you decided to introduce yourself. I've been on the site three weeks and have lost 5 pounds. I love the ease of keeping up with calories, fat, carbs, protein. I also love the positive comments from "friends." Please feel free to add me as a friend!
  • When we eat out, my husband and I each get a salad (dressing on the side. . .I dip into the bowl and eat very little dressing) We split an entre. . .usually fish or chicken. I've stopped eating baked potatoes out even though they are one of my favorites. I have found most restaurant chains have menu and nutritional info.…
  • I so understand what you are feeling. We recently moved (about 3 months ago) and I was packing my closet, trying on stuff to see if I needed to get rid of it. I tried on a pair of shorts that I was sure would fit and I couldn't get them buttoned. I burst into tears and sat in the closet crying and feeling sorry for my…
  • Welcome to the site. You will find it so helpful and motivational! Good luck on your goal to eat healthy. . .just remember, "If you bite it, write it!!" (I was totally surprised to learn how much I was overeating!) Now I look up my meals BEFORE I eat, including many restaurant items, and that really keeps me from eating…

  • Decreasing the size of the plate/bowl is a great idea! I have found that eating slowly (everyone has to wait on me, of course. . .oh well. . .) and taking about 25 minutes to eat gives my brain time to realize that I am full. If I eat a meal and still feel hungry, I wait 20 minutes and drink a glass of water or sugar free…
  • This site has taught me to "eat to live". . .not "live to eat." Writing down what I eat and seeing (slow) results adds to my motivation. Using the "food look up" (even for some restaurant) items made me aware of how many hidden calories I was eating like butter, mayonaise, and salad dressing. I always congratulated myself…
  • Congratulations on your previous weight loss. You are young so you should be able to lose the extra 10 pounds by August when you go on vacation. As for the loose skin and cellulite. . .just keep exercising. . .and what ever happens. . .wear that bikini with pride!! You are so lovely, no one is going to notice a little…
  • I've found other descripencies. I think is is caused by people posting foods and nutritional value and either making a "typo" on the numbers or just not having the right information. I usually double check on other sites or in my books to verify. (I never use milk in my scrambled eggs. It makes them "tough.")
  • Congratulations for getting into your "skinny jeans" I had clothing in my closet from size 4 to size 12. (Sad, isn't it ) When we moved recently, I tossed the 4s and 6s. At my age (61), I doubt I'll ever be a 6 again. I kept the 8s. My goal is to go from 170 (I'm at 158 now) to 125-130.
