  • This may be just what I need NOW... plateaued for the past 4 wks. Down 28 lbs., want to lose 15 more, but 20 would be AWESOME!
  • Thanks y'all. I did look again at my calorie allotment and it's keeping me at 1200 calories. I will pay closer attention to portion sizes. Yes, I am also tracking inches and was hopeful that was where I was losing if the pounds weren't going away but, unfortunately, they haven't budged in the 4 wks either. This is sooooo…
  • Great thread... wish I could wear a swim cap, but it just doesn't stay put and stay on, despite my short hair (somewhat shorter now than in my profile pic). Purchased one stated for a large head and it just rides up, making it more annoying than helpful, so I abandoned the cap. Guess I have a larger head - can't wear hats…
  • I'm sending you a friend request.
  • Toni, have faith and patience with yourself. I had a similar experience and found that the weight loss (actual number on the scale) did catch up with my efforts after I started noticing a difference in my clothing. Have you taken your measurements? I was doing that weekly at first and now will take them every 2-3 weeks and…
  • I recently celebrated my birthday and enjoyed one slice of my favorite cake with everyone else. It was so yummy and delicious... it was my choice, I have/had no regrets and I still had a loss for the week, likely because I was doing everything else right. Much to my huband's shagrin, to avoid further temptation on my part,…
  • Can never have too much support and motivation... add me too, friend!!
  • Hey California! You are not alone!! I am in the latter side of those 50's and been there, done that and doing it again. On Jan. 7th, I stepped on the scale (which had been in storage for over a year due to relocating) and confirmed my fear that I was up yet again. I already knew it because my clothes were getting tight(er)…
  • I've water rehabbed from arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus tear... and since have found that continuing the stretching and strength training - in the water - to work for me and have added swimming 4 x a week for overall cardio exercise. All recommended by orthopedic surgeon. No impact on the knees and no pain.
  • Happy for your successes, but boy, if you find an answer to the finger nail issue, I'd love to hear. I always had beautiful, natural nails but since swimming, not so much and I can't seem to grow them. :(
  • Hi Kim. I'm a relative newbie to swimming too. Just started in January. Your endurance and stamina will come with regular workouts. At first I could barely swim for 30 minutes and couldn't swim freestyle one length of the lap pool. Now I can and I'm swimming 4 days a week for at least an hour - more often 75+ minutes at a…
  • My goals are: (1) to lose 40 lbs. more (I've lost 19 lbs. in the past 2 months), but mentally I need to break that down into mini goals of 10 lbs. each, (2) keep up with my swim workout plan of at least 1 hour per day, 4 days a week, and (3) add more activity on "off" days. Feel free to add me.
  • Another suggestion for activity/exercise is water workouts... walking, jogging, swimming or water aerobics. You can begin at your own level and pace and the water is kind to your joints. It can offer resistance, build endurance and strength. Often people find they can do so much more in the water than they can on land.
  • All great suggestions for you. I'm a newbie swimmer - just started in January. Took lessons to learn breathing and stroke technique as I wanted to use swimming for exercise. I wasn't able to even do one length in the lap pool via freestyle at first, but have continued to practice and include breast stroke, back stroke and…
  • I have serious sciatica (herniated disks and a healed back fracture) too and found swimming and water aerobics to be my best friends for exercise - recommended by my neurosurgeon and orthopedist. Also stretching in a warm water therapy pool has helped tremendously. Do you have access to a pool?
  • Ditto to what's been offered above. Also consider the sustainability of your current eating habits. If you continue eating this way and hit your target weight - can you sustain/maintain it long term? I'm concerned for you.

  • I believe it's best and more recommended than not to pick a day and time of day for a weekly weigh-in. Weigh yourself the same time each week and in the same manner - clothed, unclothed - but if clothed, wear the same clothing each time. As an example - my day and time is first thing Sunday morning. I hop on the scale…
  • The best thing I ever did for myself. I made the decision after much research and serious consideration to the pros and cons and made sure to vet my surgeon and hospital to the enth degree beforehand.
  • I have a surgically repaired fracture at L-1, with herniated disks at L4-5. My neurosurgeon and orthopedic dr. have recommended swimming and aquatic activities when I asked what I could do for a physical activity and exercise. Discuss with your physician first and, if you have access to a pool, consider water activities. I…
  • Just to add my 2 cents worth... please get a proper diagnosis. Mine was so bad that I could barely walk - literally and I was in severe pain. Once confirmed, I found stretching and icing (rolling my foot over a frozen water bottle) is key as well as proper footwear with appropriate arch support. I found Orthaheel shoes to…
  • Thanks everyone for sharing your suggestions and opinions on my original question.
  • Swim today? I did, but not my best swim. Just couldn't get my breathing or rhythm in sync. Too much on my brain and couldn't concentrate. I did persevere for 40 minutes, however, mixing laps of freestyle (although not many) with breaststroke, backstroke with some running. I added 20 min. of water jogging at the end to get…
  • @gently, thank you for sharing. I do enjoy it and realize my goals will be reached in time. For now, I'm swimming my heart out, stepping outside my box and trying new things... all of which are good.
  • @Curly, I so agree with your comments to Mac & AQ. As for the water jogging, I did it out of necessity. I knew there was no way I was going make it lap after lap (swimming freestyle) and took advice previously given to mix it up with added drills. It saved me from boredom and, more importantly, from getting…
  • @getfitenee, I did my workout today incorporating some drills by combining freestyle, breaststroke and water jogging - very helpful for endurance. @fishgutsy and 60sPanda, I tried breathing on third stroke. A bit awkward, but more doable than I thought. I can see this being a good option for me. Will practice more.…
  • Robertus, how does the anti-fog coating work for you? While I'm a swimming newbie, the fogging up on my Swedes is driving me nuts.
  • Curly... woohoo and kudos to you! I haven't made that second full lap freestyle... but it's closer than it was. I had a great swim today! 60 minutes combining freestyle, breastroke and adding water jogging in between. Topped off with 6 laps of water jogging at the end. I did try left side breathing and breathing on the…
  • I started the Revoluntary Shred diet this past Sunday, after following my own plan of lowering carbs and processed foods, managing portion sizes and adding exercise 3-4 days a wk the previous month. I do take Synthroid for the hypothyroidism, managed by my doctor and had a total blood workup recently to make certain…
  • Thank you all for the wonderful advice - greatly appreciated! I'm certainly a swimmer in training and will take to heart the suggestions offered and give them a go - one at a time. During Wednesday's workout I swam the longest I have to date - an hour by mixing it up between freestyle, breaststroke and water jogging in…
  • I'm proud to say that I swam the most that I have at any one single time... swam for 60 minutes, alternating between freestyle and breaststroke... mostly working on technique and breathing. I then followed it up on a bike for 15 min.
