  • Split squats for sure. Renegade rows, I don't look forward to, but nothing beats split squats.
  • Whenever you're perceived to be 'higher up' on the social ladder, consider it open season on you in terms of what's 'socially acceptable'. Same thing happens in comedy. Doesn't make it right, but that's how it is.
  • Have you tried liquid aminos instead of soy sauce? It is still soybean-based, but isn't fermented and doesn't contain gluten if that's where the allergen issues are.
  • Agree with a lot of others. I think its more about feeling invalidated/criticized by your friend, that you are somehow doing something 'wrong' (pushing yourself). And seeing how much you are volunteering info about your past accomplishments, you are looking for (re)validation. I think you'll find the most peace if you can…
  • Congrats on your 5-miler! I probably do 10-11 min miles. I wish I could compete with you, I think I'd really enjoy slow-running. But I run in my neighborhood and get too embarrassed being passed by power walkers or people just walking their dogs. :s
  • Its been awhile, but I believe he recommends the 5-day split, but also provides 4 and 3-day split options.
  • Not impossible. Just difficult and increasingly unlikely, especially compared to being in a surplus. The body constantly cycles through catabolic and anabolic states as you eat throughout the day, I never understood this reasoning for gaining muscle to be impossible. Otherwise, recomp wouldn't happen either. Really depends…
  • Strength training makes me sleepy too. I can do cardio, strength circuits, or interval-type exercise and feel totally wiped during it, fine later. But there's something about strength training that makes me sleepy (and hungry) several hours later, particularly when lifting heavy (~2-6 rep range). My Google-fu has told me…
  • Italian: not a big fan. i dunno... pizza? Chinese: Shanghai dumplings Fruit: cherimoya, pomegranate Vegetable: cauliflower or broccoli Dessert: chocolate Ice Cream flavour: mint chocolate chip Crisp flavour: flaming hot cheetos Favourite High-cal Meal: thai red curry (with lots of coconut milk) over white rice Favourite…
  • I stopped eating dairy for the same reason, though mine was all hormonal acne around my chin. I'll occasionally reintroduce yogurt (and ice cream), but there's definitely a threshold where I start breaking out again. I'm also WAY more lactose-intolerant now. Like, I need a lactase supplement to eat ice cream. Whey isolate…
  • Look for lemon-flavored fish oil. I get it in liquid form but they have it in capsules too. It will also absorb better when taken with a meal.
  • Same here! I only know this as 'natto' in Japanese cuisine. Its the worst!
  • I've read that hormone levels during late luteal phase (~week before a period) make you more insulin resistant, so you're more susceptible to swings in blood sugar (read: cravings and hunger). So theoretically, low carb would help. But I totally agree with you, about 1 week before my period, carbs are all I want! More…
  • I've been using this one for like 2 months straight: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/14297/asian-coleslaw/ You have to like raw ginger and garlic though. I use peanut powder instead of PB, 1/3 the oil, and substitute a portion of sugar w/ stevia,
  • I treat them like a carb. Different responses are likely due to a difference of perspective. For a vegan/vegetarian, legumes are probably one of the highest protein foods you can eat.
  • Have you tried sunflower seed butter? I don't have personal experience, but know people with nut allergies who substitute it.
  • I like dipping biscuits in my coleslaw. so good <3 This sounds so yummy, I'm going to try it. Do you melt the chocolate?
  • I like old navy high-waisted compression leggings. I'm not picky about tops, my most used ones tend to be danskin.
  • I do my fish oil cause its fat, 40 cals a serving. Multivits or minerals, no.
  • I use an app called Glow to track my cycle and it allows you to log 'symptoms', one of which is appetite. You can only mark it mild, moderate, or severe. Then it has a 'pattern chart' where you can compare the incidences of any given symptom across multiple cycles. It has logs for mood, weight, sleep, and a bunch of other…
  • I've read that it alters your natural gait and can lead to injury. If you want to do loaded walking, a backpack or just carrying something in hand (farmer's carry) is a better option.
  • I like 1g/lb lean body mass when in a deficit. Less is okay if you're eating at maintenance or above. I occasionally do 1g/lb bodyweight. I find its very satiating and makes it easier to manage hunger/cravings, but starts limiting the kinds of foods I want to eat just to get that much protein in.
  • I think its a combination of people having exaggerated expectations and sellers encouraging those misconceptions in order to sell things. Thus, nothing actually delivers and is therefore 'woo'. Take "detox" for example. Yes, your body is perfectly capable of "detox"-ing, but you have to pee, poo, sweat, breathe, or…
  • I like to mix it with lentils, kinda inspired by the middle eastern mujaddara dish, which is rice and lentils topped with caramelized onions. I end up adding whatever veggies I have on hand (plus bacon), so its not really the same, but still delicious.
  • Roasted chickpeas are good. Easy to make at home from canned. Popcorn is pretty high fiber too, just have to be mindful of any high calorie toppings.
  • I usually mix gunpowder green tea with other herby things. My favorite is to add in cinnamon chips and crushed cardamom seeds. Sometimes I add dried pomegranate seeds (anardana) or ginger. For non-caffeinated, I have chamomile and tulsi tea, but they must be diuretics cause I'm constantly going to the bathroom afterwards.
  • I do this with lentils in a mason jar. They sprout really easily. It's not much work, but requires a little planning if you're used to just cooking them right away. I soak ~8hrs and then rinse them in the morning and evening until I'm ready to cook em. Sprouts faster in warmer weather. Its still pretty warm here, so…
  • I do this with blueberries. I let em sit in the dilute vinegar for a bit, then rinse well with water. After that, you have to let them dry completely, I usually roll them out on paper towels in a baking tray to let them air dry. Then, I store them in the fridge in a mason jar with a paper towel in it, any airtight…
  • It's less about vibrams specifically, and more about whether you want to take on barefoot running. Water shoes are a cheap option if you just want to try out something minimalist. I have a pair, though I don't consider myself a runner. Have to say they feel pretty great running in the mud in the rain or in the surf at the…
  • I have problems like this too. My arms always want to take over during pullups. I do a set of scapular retractions (leaning backwards so the angle is almost like a row) as warmup, presumably to help activate the lats. Using an overhand wide-grip helps too, but I suck so much at them.
