  • I have hyperthyroidism (Graves), so I'm on a thyroid suppressor. Your doctor needs to be checking your T3 and T4, as those are better indicators of how you should be feeling (and losing weight). I agree with others that TSH of 3 is a little high and that the 1-2 range is where most people are happiest, but if your T3 and…
  • While I don't get to the gym nearly as often as I should, I rarely do weights and cardio on the same day (I do a little cardio to warmup before weights, but I don't count it as having done cardio). For me, it's more of a time thing. I won't want to go to the gym if I know I'm going to be spending 2 hours there. If I…
  • I agree with DeeVanderbles... if you're only stopping for a few seconds to catch your breath, I'd count it. I haven't hit the point where I LOVE running just yet, and I figure as long as I can continue the C25K program, I'm fine. I don't expect to be running a full 5K at the end without some walking anyway.
  • There are a lot of Couch to 5K (C25K) options available to you - it isn't just one specific app. I personally use RunKeeper (free app) to track my runs, and it also has a free 5K training plan (and 10K, half-marathon, marathon). A lot of people seem to like the Zombies Run! 5K training plan, which is more of a story about…
  • I use RunKeeper (free), which also has some free training plans available (5K, 10K, half-marathon, marathon).
  • I was at a marathon this past weekend (I was not running it) and noticed some runners with bright orange "Deaf" or "Blind" signs attached to their backs. Since the signs were all the same, I imagine they were probably provided at the event, but it may not be such a bad idea if you're running in a high-traffic area.
  • This was my first time running outside (been using the treadmill throughout this very cold/snowy winter). It was rough. 3/9 - 3.79mi
  • If you aren't comfortable asking for help, I'd just recommend heading towards the machines rather than the free weight area. I've been to 2 PF locations and they both have the machines sort of grouped together - a section each for legs, arms, and abs/back. If you go over and look at the machines, there are pictures of…
  • 2.46 miles yesterday
  • Angina is a heart-related chest pain/discomfort. I hope your doctor didn't tell you your throat infection was called angina...
  • I failed February... didn't even make half my miles. I'm determined to try every month until I make it.
  • I'm not a teacher, but I work from 7:30am to 5pm. My commute is 1-1.5 hours, so I need to be out of the house by 6:30am (I wake up around 5:30-5:45) and I generally don't get home until 6:30pm because of rush hour traffic. I don't have kids to take care of, so it's easy for me to get home at 6:30, have a quick pre-workout…
  • What the heck?! What kind of 5K was this where the slowest person did it in 32 minutes? Regardless, good job!
  • I can jog/walk 5K in about 45 minutes, give or take 2-3 minutes depending on the day and course. As long as you're doing some jogging and/or fast walking during some of the race, you won't finish last. There are people who walk 5Ks at a slow, leisurely pace (more power to them - at least they're doing it). As long as…
  • I've been to 2 PFs and they both had barbells... I didn't realize they wouldn't all have the same equipment. My main location also has free wifi so I am able to listen to Pandora without using up all my data.
  • Disclaimer: I don't have experience with other Asics shoes. Are you wearing the right size shoe? I just bought last year's Kayano, but I had to go a half size up, otherwise my toes were hitting the arch. I have always worn 8.5 wide, but now I'm wearing 9 regular and it feels better. I would suggest going back to the store…
  • I sometimes experience something similar, but it doesn't seem to matter where I am in my cycle. It doesn't happen all the time, but I've had it happen about 10 mintues into running and/or Insanity workouts. I always did a 5-minute warmup, but I've noticed that I can prevent it from happening if I add an additional 5-10…
  • I'm also a woman, average height/weight, run 2-3 times a week on a treadmill. I just bought Asics GEL-Kayano 19s and I'm loving them. They're last year's Kayano model so you can probably find them on sale for less than $100 (the new Kayano 20s are ~$150).
  • Just echoing the others here... doctors who are less educated regarding the thyroid will look at TSH alone. A good endo will know that T3/T4 is what really matters.
  • I'm doing one of the training plans on RunKeeper and there are days when I have to do "steady" runs and days when I have to do "fast" runs (the fast runs are generally 60-second runs and 60-second walks). My walking is around 3mph, "steady" running is 5mph, and "fast" intervals are 7mph. I've only run on a treadmill so…
  • 2/9 - 1.5 miles to complete week 2 of RunKeeper's free Beginner 5K training plan
  • Another 2 miles today
  • Just bought my first pair of dedicated running shoes - Asics Gel Kayano... they make me want to run more often, which is always a plus :)
  • 2/01 - 1.89 miles done... felt awful during the run, but I did it
  • Nikkincs, thank you for your input! Please keep us updated on your progress. I was diagnosed with Graves' around November 2012... I'm currently taking methimazole and everything has stabilized in the normal range (I did come off meds for a week or so before the uptake scan and my levels shot up and I felt like crap, so I…
  • I'm VERY new to running so I'll aim for 28 miles - one for each day
  • Thanks for the support, guys! meesh, I do belong to Planet Fitness... I've never been into classes and they have enough of what I need. I've just been trying to get back into running and using the machines to minimize my chances of hurting myself as I rebuild my muscles. Before Graves, I was doing Insanity workouts when I…
  • Make sure you're really at your "normal." You can't determine that with TSH alone. You need to make sure your doctor is checking your Free T3 and Free T4 as well. Those will give you a better idea of where you are. Many people feel better with TSH closer to 1.0 anyway. Some don't, but make sure you've done your research.…
  • It can take a long time to stabilize your thyroid levels. Even if you decide to get the radioactive iodine (RAI) or a thyroidectomy, you'll still have to find the right doses of thyroid replacement meds. It can take months (and, unfortunately, sometimes years) for you to finally feel close to 100% better. If you've only…
  • Definitely call your doctor if you think the bleeding is caused by the meds... you shouldn't be experiencing any side effects, so you may be switched to another medicine and/or dosage. Otherwise, it will take about 4-6 weeks for the methimazole to take effect.
