I hope I've finally found the thing that works for me.
I've been down the calorie-counting road several times in my life. I usually do it for the better part of a year, see some small results, then stop for a while and return a couple years later. I've always been a little overweight, nothing awful, but my waistline has grown slowly over the years. Ten years ago, at about…

Partner diagnosed with very high cholesterol at 37 yo. How can I support w/o nagging?
Some background.... if you just want the question, skip to the end.... So my SO was just Dx with high total cholesterol (285) and high LDL (205). He's youngish (37) and skinny-fat. He's 5'10" and weighs about 150. He walks about 45 min 2x/day to and from work but otherwise does not exercise regularly. However, when we went…

NuvaRing/Mirena and weight (ladies?)
Now, I know some of the reasons for going up from about 135 to 162 in the last year (new relationship= a lot of nice dinners and lazy snuggling), but it's still a dramatic and rapid weight gain... I spent this year trying out new birth control methods because I've categorically avoided hormones for years. I tried the…

hilarious (and useful) calories burned website
I was looking for a calories-burned estimate for my weekend work at a farmer's market-- several hours of standing, bagging stuff, moving boxes, and taking money-- and found this weird list of "Standing Activities," some of which cracked me up. I chose to estimate my work as "camping involving standing, walking or sitting,…

Teachers?
I'm not really trying to start a group (maybe there already is a teacher group?)... but I think that teaching is such a rewarding and at the same time maddeningly stressful job, and I know a LOT of teachers that struggle with their weight due to just not having control of their own schedule. If you're like me, you go to…

OMG. There are SO MANY calories in....
... Trader Joe's cornbread mix. 2,600 calories for the package(!!!), which only makes a little 9" square baking pan. A serving is about a 3 in. square and has 300 calories. I'm reeling. I ate a little less than two servings yesterday and my eyes fell out of my head when I got the calorie count. What other calorie counts…

are you an apple, pear, banana or hourglass?
in the twin thread i saw a couple of people post their body shape, as well as their weight and age, and it got me thinking about whether that might be a big factor in HOW we lose weight. So.... please weigh in. Call it amateur research. 1. How old are you? 2. What is your body shape? -Apple: You put on/carry weight mostly…

Millroy the Magician
... is a book by Paul Theroux, an author mostly known for his slightly snooty travel narratives. This book is a bizarre departure from that style of writing, instead focusing on the fictional (eponymous) main character, who is not so much a magician as a strange Jesus-like diet guru who advocates a kind of "Bible…

Awright weightlifters... give me some advice!
So I'm new to the weightlifting thing. I've always done cardio but weightlifting was intimidating (the weights part of the gym always seems so male-dominated; I always felt like I was breaking some kind of code by getting on a bench with some little weights). But I started on a whim and now I love it! So... (no…

I need a crash course in measurement.
What and where am I supposed to measure? Specifically, where is my waist? Is it where the waistband of my pants are (just above hips at my navel) or is it the slimmest part of my torso ( on me, a few inches above my navel)? Also, does a hip measurement include my booty or not?

More MUSCLE = More HUNGRY??
So I added weight training 4-5 times a week to my workouts. I've been lifting 12 lb dumbbells for flys, kickbacks, raises, and presses, as well as machine squats of 120-160 lbs, pulley rows, and ab stuff. I've been doing this for about a month, and I've just noticed an big increase in my 10 am appetite. I eat lunch at this…

Post your best visual portion help here!
I know my downfall is estimating my portion size. I have found many tools that help me estimate what 200 calories of food look like, what size 3 oz of meat is, etc. What non-scale, non-measuring cup tools or memory tricks do you use? Instructions for posting pictures: ENCLOSE the web address of the picture (hint: the…

How do you reward yourself?
I know this topic's been posted on before, but promising myself rewards just really increased my engagement with goals that were feeling stale. I'm doing a stair-step rewards program like those old fundraiser plans: Every 5 lbs= new book (love books!) Every 10 lbs= new pants (love pants) + new book Every 20 lbs= new piece…

Anyone do the p90x workout but not the food/nutrition?
I think the exercises look awesome but I think nutritional drinks and supplements are mostly too processed and not good for me, not to mention pricey! Has anyone had success just following the exercise plan and doing entirely your own food? I just know that if I have to eat that overpriced crap I won't do it, but I like…

Confessions...
They're good for the soul. Mine: I bought a kombucha and drank it in class this morning. Why is this a confession? They're now 21 and over in California. Oops.

foods you used to think were healthy...
... until you started counting the calories in them! for me: --veggie burritos! i'm in the bay area, and the mission-style burrito is omnipresent. however, these "silver bullets" pack between 900 and 1500 calories EACH. --on that note, tortillas in general seemed okay until i saw the calorie count for the large white ones.…

speed of the food craving "reset"
I LOVE IT! My body SO QUICKLY went from craving sugar and bread all the time to just not caring. There's chocolate all over the house because my sweetie has a sweet tooth and i don't even need to eat it-- better yet i can take a small piece and feel satisfied... I just want to shout out to everyone starting this journey--…

squeezing into old clothes...
Okay, so I will NOT buy a new wardrobe when I am done with this process because I shamelessly squeeze into (or ignore) my old clothes... I'm envious of people who see their "fat" clothes fall off and get to be recycled because my reaction is more like, oh, good, my clothes fit again. Anyone else in this boat?

Please check out my diary-- what am I doing wrong?
So I've been calorie counting since the beginning of January and on MFP since the middle of January. I lost 5 lbs of water weight right away and excitedly added it to my ticker... but then went back up. Okay, normal. no big deal. But the scale (and the tape measure) just will not drop now. My ticker is a lie because I…

coolest weight loss tool ever!
These plates and bowls have little measurements on them to help you choose good portions. I love the plates especially! http://www.shopmeasureupbowl.com/category.sc;jsessionid=FCAA51E43ACA8FDA23F28761C62DC17F.qscstrfrnt04?categoryId=4

Will my booty ever...
...you know, lift a little? I exercise all the time and my butt is flat, flat, flat and wide. This is such a self-involved question, but has anyone seen a big change in the back end? Ha ha..... sheepish.

Why does my sweat smell like cookies?
The weirdest freaking thing. I've cut refined sugar out almost completely, so... why do my workout clothes (and my body) smell like sugar cookies after I work out?

Talking about obesity to kids (and adults)
I'm very conflicted about this. I'm a middle school teacher and see many students (usually girls) with very unhealthy bodies already in 7th-8th grade. Most of these students are overweight, but there is the occasional dangerously thin girl as well. I know first hand about the dangers of eating disorders and wanting to…

Do you eat leftove exercise calories?
I worked out like a fiend yesterday and had a 750 kCal deficit. I finished my workout late and didn't feel like eating, so I didn't. I really don't want to starve myself; should I eat those kCals today?
