lifting heavy and knee pain??
So, I have been exercising really regularly for about 9 months (I have, historically, been a runner but got injured and took a break that turned into a much longer "break" than intended). I started with spin classes, then started running, then added in weight training (mostly using machines at the gym + abs, etc). Well, I…

Not getting enough calories/ night time hunger
So, I"m just embarking on my journey (started about 3 weeks ago) and just started limiting calories but not keeping track until yesterday. I have now realized that I am not eating enough calories, and my biggest issue is that I don't eat enough throughout the day and then have a ton of calories left at night. For instance,…

Logging strength training?
I have been a real cardio junkie, but I finally made an appointment with a personal trainer at my gym for 30 minutes to get a tutorial in lifting weights. He showed me about 10 different machines (e.g. proper form, settings, appropriate weight resistance for where I'm at right now, etc - he also told me that once I get…

Mind over matter when it comes to metabolism?
Did anyone else hear the story on NPR this morning that featured a psychologist who did a test that showed that if you believe you're drinking a calorie-laden, rich and satisfying shake, your body actually responds as if it has received enough calories and boosts metabolism, as opposed to someone who believes he is…

Just reached "normal" BMI
sorry folks - no pictures... but am feeling super happy. Went from pretty high in the "overweight" BMI category down to "normal." I still have a ways to go to my goal weight - but this is a milestone!

slow and steady weight loss and confusion
So... I joined MFP at the beginning of the year. I started at at 180, am down to 164.5, and am ultimately hoping to get down to 135-140. This means, I've been losing an average of 1.3 lbs/week. While I was hoping to lose more like 2 lbs/week, I've been OK with the rate of drop - having read the threads and have focused on…

Business travel tips and tricks?
I'm on my first business trip since I started my new lifestyle - it's only 3 days, so not the end of the world if i mess up, but for others who travel for work, what are your tips/tricks for keeping on track? My days during business hours are going to consist of a lot of sitting and going out for meals. <sigh> Which brings…

For the goal oriented (like me)
I am a driven person. I am successful and when a task needs to be done, I tackle it, wrestle it to the ground, and conquer! But, this hasn't worked for me in the arena of diet and exercise. I have been a yo-yo dieter and exerciser for years - i would go strong and be all or nothing. I would lose weight, run a half…

"banking" calories?
So - if you know that you've got a special occasion coming up (like a superbowl party) where the food is likely to be crap and too irresistible! ha. Is it reasonable to eat less in the days leading up to the party to "make up" for the over-calorie eating that you know you're bound to do.... or do you just stay to your…

BMR / TDEE v. 1200 calories
I have been on this weight loss journey for only a short period of time (I started exercising regularly about 3 months ago, after taking time off after a running injury - but had kept eating like I was running, so put on a bunch of weight during my time "off"). About 4 weeks ago, I also added a nutrition component to my…

Hair care and exercise
I'm not entirely sure this is the right section in the forums for this, but oh well... My hair stylist says I should only be washing my hair 3-4x per week. That seems to be fine when I don't exercise daily, but now that I am upping my workouts from 3 days per week to 5-6. I just can't see myself NOT washing my hair after I…

the weekends are so challenging
I don't know if it's sleepiness, or a symptom of eating a bunch of crap last night and today, but I'm feeling super discouraged. I have been on my weight loss "journey" only for a month, and I just find that the weekends are such a challenge. I am really very disciplined throughout the week, drinking a ton of water, eating…

If a calorie is a calorie...
Why pay attention to the macros? I ask because I currently have about 500 calories left to eat tonight, but am over in fat and sodium, under on everything else. So, basically, I'm left with the option of drinking a bunch of fat free chocolate milk to make my macros work (that is clearly my only choice at this point. Heh)..…
