I did it
HONK! That is me tooting my own horn. I passed my oral preliminary exam a week ago today. I am now officially a Ph.D. candidate, (two and a half more years of research / writing to go.) I did this while getting back on the exercise bandwagon, I've been going to the gym three-five days a week the last two months and bike…

OT - !@$(%@ drivers -- RANT
I am not your enemy. Really. I have nothing against you until you put my life in danger. My children need a mom. My husband needs me too. And I really like living. Think about it, I'm not even in your lane, but in the bike lane. It is not good sportsmanship to try to run me off the road. Or to zip and turn ahead of me,…

OT - color
What color is your living room? Do you like them? Do they reflect you? Mine is neutral walls(white & pickled pine), sandstone pink/beige tile floors with maroon and chartreuse. I never meant to choose those colors, they just sort of happened due to our tight budget. Maroon silk drapes over a 20 foot wall of glass, accent…

Poll - do you???
From our laundry thread it seems a lot of us hang out our laundry. I was wondering how many do on this list. Lurkers too, Drop a post if you hang your laundry to dry (inside or out) rather than use a dryer on any sort of regular basis. Can we top 100 people???

Princess Laundry
May I borrow your laundry tiara for awhile today? I've got 7 loads to wash, schlep across the yard, hang out, bring in, and put away. (That'll burn a few calories:laugh: )

Starting from Ground Zero
I've been meaning to all summer, and my friend (who's on here somewhere) is good at it... so we went to swim laps today. I've never swam for exercise in my life!!! I've run, biked, and weight trained, but, WOW, swimming is a whole different world. I am out of shape!!!!!!! but, I started and swam 300 meters today. Yah for…

Who dreams this stuff up?
I read about this in C&E News yesterday. Anyone else hear about this? I guess it is being promoted as a safer way to "smoke" and/or as a tool to quit smoking. http://www.pr.com/press-release/97171 I was never a smoker so I can't appreciate how hard it is to quit but I personally would not want to breathe in propylene…

Hot, hot, hot!
Yes, the weather -- biking home in 100 degree heat after a day is a tad warm... but I'm talking about internal. I feel hot (temperature) in a good way, like my metabolism is revving along in high speed. It's about a week after I kicked up the exercise a notch. I'm bubbling with energy and feel warmer from the inside. I've…

Changed my goals
I reset my minimum calories to 1300 - from 1200 - I know I'm little, er, short but 1200 cals a day is not enough! on the days I don't work out. I am just going to focus on getting an hour or more of cardio in at least 5 days a week and weight train 2 - 3 days a week....pretty much what I used to do. I plan to ignore…

Back to school
Yes, my little darlings head back to school tomorrow. Oh happy day. Can we hear an "Amen"?

So Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeepy
The past few days I can hardly stay awake. I've gotten enough sleep. I've gotten some exercise. I just wannna sleeeeeeeeep. I'm taking three days off with the children before they start school. I am taking naps and laying low and doing next to nothing. They seem fine with it...but where is my normal energy?

What SPF do you do?
I put 70 on my face and 55 on my body. Fair in AZ. Add sunglasses and grannyhat and I'm ready to go. My kids get a minimum of 50 before they go to school each day.

I found one Bloat!
I bloat easily. But I don't always know why. Thanks to this food recording I think I found one... Trader Joe's Gluten free brownies (Dagnabit!) I ate one...then another...and the next day - Shezam!! Added inches and pounds. From 130 cals over (it was a cheat day...but so not worth it.) I looked back a day and the only…

Guilty pleasures - what are yours?
The simple, calorie free pleasures in life.... Music: Mika - Relax (love to study with this song playing.) What about when you are sick?
Do you just force those calories down the best you can? I'm not talking stomach flu or food poisoning sick where vomiting is an issue, but other blah (colds, sore throats, or whatever random) sick day illnesses. I feel yucky but I finally got within 100 calories of my daily guidelines. I made sure I more than passed my…

exercise pill
Hmmm This sounds way too good to be true. It will be interesting to see what the studies find... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/01/science/01muscle.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin I can see where it could be great for treating certain segments of the population, but I wouldn't want to give up my workouts.

Why? Help me make sense please.
I like it, but I'm befuddled. I don't understand the difference. You all are more objective. Point out what I'm overlooking or missing please. Why did I lose three pounds in 11 days, my goal and "ideal" was 0.6 lbs a week. (Not that I'm complaining, I'm delighted, but confused.) I usually don't have to really do much to…

OT - Awww a bittersweet day
Some days are just bigger than others. This was all after work: One of my dd's pets died today. It was unexpected, we don't know the cause (parakeet, one in an aviary). She took it well. We had a small service and buried the budgie under a cactus. Meanwhile my son donated his bike to the local Ronald McDonald house. My son…

allergy "safe" tuna casserole
Any other food allergies/intolerances out there? wheat free, gluten free, egg free, dairy free tuna casserole. I wanted tuna casserole but couldn't find just the right thing so I just threw things together last night. My family liked it: 1 can albacore tuna in water 1 bag organic brown rice pasta (Penne) from Trader Joe's…
