Sorry; I couldn't stand the people on it long enough to finish an episode of "Seinfeld". The writing may have been clever but I was so turned off by the characters I couldn't enjoy it.

I resist labels of "best ever" and obviously everyone has their own opinion, but I'd have to throw "Frasier" out there for consideration. They kept up the momentum for... was it 12 seasons?... and they were consistently hilarious.

It's very good, especially among American sitcoms. But I can't say it's the best sitcom ever when there are so many British sitcoms that are just better.

i love the show. it doesn't matter to me where it ranks as far as "all time" status, because i like it. I watch it in re-runs all the time. I quote it all the time, too... sometimes without realizing it.

As a New Yorker, I loved (and still love) Seinfeld. It always amazed me that the show was so well-received outside the NYC area, because some things about it were SO New York. I think we just enjoyed it on a whole other level.

But there have been other great sitcoms over the years. I would certainly rank Cheers and Frasier among the best...and some of the 1970s shows like All In the Family. Mary Tyler Moore, and M*A*S*H were brilliant. Also Taxi. And I loved Friends, because I watched it as a single 20-something living in NYC.

It's definitely one of my all time favorites! So is Frasier, Cheers, The Office, and even Friends. But I really do not get why The Big Bang Theory is such a hit. I've tried to watch it, and it's just not funny. Not even a little bit.
It's a hit because it IS funny. Maybe not to you, but it's funny.

Friends was great the first two seasons. It was OK after that. It lost its magic, though.

No television series is more quotable than Seinfeld. Every day I encounter a situation that will require a Seinfeld quote. No other TV show, or movie even, can say that.

Does that make it best ever? Possibly, and certainly for me.

Not sure if I agree. I don't think it ever jumped the shark. I do think Monica's and Ross' characters got weird the last few years but overall I thought the show ended strong.
I wouldn't say it jumped the shark. It was still decent. It just wasn't nearly as good. Those first two seasons were awesome.

Hmm interesting point. Does a show deserve to be the "best" if it has one or two exceptional seasons, and then a bunch of mediocre ones at the end?

I don't have a good answer for comedies... but I love Scrubs. Drama wise, I have a number of shows that have great premises, really engaging seasons and then die off: the X-files, Dexter (way to stay strong and then pooch it in the last couple episodes), Lost (although I didn't hate the ending like a lot do). For me Breaking Bad set the bar for dramas since it started out slow but got progressively more intense and even had a satisfying ending.

I haven't found a comedy like that. After a while they all seem to get into a rut. I think when they are good, they just need to stop after about 100 episodes (5 or 6 seasons) to avoid getting stale.

So I had to do some stupid training PowerPoint for work and take a stupid quiz on it and one of the quiz questions used "Art Vandalay" as a name.

    Awesome.

Kramer: Oh, Little Jerry loves the morning.
    Jerry: Who?
Kramer: Little Jerry Seinfeld. Yeah I named my chicken after you.

Yup, this! Exactly why I've loved it all these years... it's everyday life... something happens in my day and I nearly bust out laughing because it's already been in an episode of Seinfeld years ago. giggle.gif

Seinfeld is a classic, to be sure, but nothing has ever made me laugh out loud like Modern Family.
