    If you go by the odds then maintaining is definitely not in the cards for most. I think it's around 90% of those who lose weight will regain their orginial loss, or even gain back more, within two years of ceasing their weight loss diet. I think we are all well aware of the fact that most people regain either through personal experience or observation of those around us so this shouldn't be a surprise. However, you CAN maintain if you understand that dieting for a weight loss is just the first step and that maintenance is forever. If you look at the data collected from the National Weight Control Registry you will see that exercise and logging are keys to the maintenance phase.

    It's not impossible to maintain but it does mean that you have to have a real life style change rather than a quick fix weight loss program or you will just go back to your old habits and thus your old weight. The reason why so many fail seems to be that they do revert to their old habits so there is nothing surprising about the fact that they should revert to their old weight as well.
