Buy smaller size for motivation/reward

You know, I actually bought smaller sizes (ie, tight clothes) when I was losing weight, but it wasn't for motivation or anything... it was just because my stuff was too big, I knew I was going to fit in them eventually, and I didn't want to waste money on something that would be too big later. There was never a doubt in my mind that I was going to get smaller.
Now I don't, but because I don't think I will lose another size at this point.0 -

Dresses, that is another matter.
There is a family dress that got to be mine when I turned 40. ( for some reason it keeps being passed on to whoever it fits). I then put on 30ish pounds. I hung it up, so I could see it from the bed, and it acted as my weight loss goal.
Here I am wearing it; it fits better than when I was 40. An inspirational piece can work!
Me, after losing my menopausal 30lb gain, turning 60.
Cheers, h.
You. Look. Marvelous!!!0 -
I've never specifically bought clothes in smaller sizes, but I do have some smaller sized clothes that I saved from earlier or were given to me. I do try on the next size down pants every once in a while to see if they fit better. It's exciting when they do and I can pull them out of the box to add to my closet. When I do that, I try to get rid of the largest clothes I have too (replacing the biggest pants for the small ones I just pulled out) because if I don't, I'll keep wearing them forever even though they look ridiculous on me.0

Does anyone do this? If so, what did you buy? When do you expect to wear it? I bought a pair of dress slacks in size 6. I'm currently a size 12. I have them hanging in the closet and dream about the day they will fit. I loved buying them because it was a vote of confidence that I know I will reach my goal. I'm thinking I will be wearing them in the spring... Can't wait!!!
After 15 yrs of Big/Tall...absolutely. Bought smaller sweaters on sale this summer & wearing them now. I have lost 20" in my waist...and 165 pounds! Plan to hit goal by the end of February 2015.0 -

OMG, this is awesome! Congrats!0 -
What I do is, I buy an outfit one size smaller and then once I'm able to fit in that outfit, I buy another smaller outfit. It's more realistic as this weight loss business is long process and if I were to buy something 3-5 sizes smaller, it would be out of style by the time I can wear it. It also gives me one item of clothes that fits when I'm at that size.0

No.
I celebrate after hitting a milestone by going shopping.
I personally don't work well with deprivation motivation, which this would be for me (stare at it and can't have it).
How about getting yourself a shopping gift card to be used when you hit goal?
This answer describes me too. While I don't really celebrate milestones by going shopping, I do "allow" myself to go a little wild w/ shopping when I've consistently hit my mini goals and find that some of my clothes are getting too big.
When I first started out however, I'm really glad I didn't try to buy many "goal" items of smaller clothing because I often found that I changed sizes in unexpected ways due to losing inches from different areas, skipped a few sizes all together, and if you asked me 2 years ago what my "end goal" was I might have thought it was to be in a 14 and I wear mostly size 10 now...so that would have been a mixed bag to deal with.

I totally do this, whether I would encourage anyone else to... no as it can bite you in the arce. So depends, for me it pushes me forward. I have this lovely little item currently taking up space staring at me every day... so yeah it is motivating me currently to keep up my steps.

I definitely would not buy more than a size smaller as there is no way to really know how the thing is going to fit. I also have smaller clothes from before so I am trying them on every couple of months. When they fit again it feels great!
i do/have done this. and then it has hung in my closet for years because it's even tighter than before after many failed weight-loss attempts LOL. so what i do is just keep it around to remind me that i've been at that size before and i can do it again. i still have some jeans hanging around that i bought late high school/early college years that have been goal pants. one day!!
Good point, I only do this now because I have been losing weight so can reasonably predict how much weight I will lose in a month. I used to do this when I wasn't losing weight and it was never a good idea! Buying something too small never got me off my butt to lose, but I think it's OK now when I am fully committed to this lifestyle change.

I buy clothes a size smaller all the time, mainly because I shop at TJ Maxx and if I see something I like, I'd better buy it. I've gained and lost weight enough to know where the inches will come off and can predict what will fit at n minus x pounds.
It's good for me to have smaller clothes in the closet because, you know that feeling when your pants fit in the morning but are bagging off your rear by the time you get home? I'd better have a replacement pair ready, even if I have to leave the button open for a few weeks.
No yo-yo'ing this time. The weight that's coming off now is gone forever!0
