Subway Sandwich Calories....be careful

So, I went into my local Subway for a change of my usual soup lunch. There are a few low calorie options, but the listed calories can be deceiving if you are not careful. The Turkey Breast & Ham 6" Sub. is listed on their calorie board (Posted listings are required in nyc) as 280 calories. When I asked which bread that was included in that calorie count, the counter man told me the 280 is only for the meat. It doesnt include any bread or condiments. The picture next to the calories is a full sandwich on bread with lettuce , cheese tomatoes etc. In reality if you have a sandwich on 9 grain bread with just tomato and mustard, it comes out to 500 calories! I usually just have a 160 calorie soup and a piece of fruit for lunch. I will go back to that, but be careful of calorie counts. Lesson learned

The guy you spoke with is wrong. The NI listed on the board is for the sandwich "as prepared", which will include the bread, meat(s) and standard vegetables.
From the Subway website - "Sandwich nutrition values include 9-Grain Wheat bread, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers and cucumbers. Values do not include cheese unless noted."
This means that if the sandwich doesn't include cheese in the description, it's not included in the calorie counts, and sauces aren't included, but the standard "dress" of vegetables, cheeses, sauces, etc. for each particular sandwich is included in the NI. This means the chicken bacon ranch will include the chicken, bacon, cheese and ranch dressing as those are "standard", plus all of the standard veggies, etc.
So, you could have a foot long turkey & ham sandwich with only tomatoes and mustard for about 560 calories, probably more like 550 since you are leaving off some vegetables. Check out their interactive website nutrition calculator.12 -
It includes the bread and the veggies, too, and detailed by weird_me2. Perhaps the clerk was attempting to clarify that it's "meat only, no cheese" included in the calorie. But, yes, the bread (the wheat choice) is included in the calorie count.
There's no way whatever paltry amount of lunch slices is on the 6 inch) has 280 calories and weighs 217g w/ 46g carbs (numbers from Subway.com).3 -
If you leave the cheese off and only use mustard & veggies it is not too bad. With unsweet tea I try to keep lunches between 400 - 550 calories. You need to leave the chips on the rack too.1

Use this https://www.subway.com/Nutrition/Files/NutritionValues.pdf A guide that was put together to USDA reporting standards and done by people getting paid a lot. And don't use the advice from someone paid min wage to make sandwiches0

for the record I just crushed a six inch turkey breast (double meat) with vegetables, cheese, and some oil and vinegar...that *kitten* was delicious...! according to what I came up with that is about 350 calories ...5

I just make my own sandwiches using St Joseph's Whole Wheat Pita breads available in the Walmart Deli section. They only have 60 calories and you can load them up with your choice of healthy toppings. My favorites are LEAN ham, a SUPER thin slice of Monterey Jack cheese, boatloads of raw spinach and some Peach Mango salsa.... YUMMY!!!! Mine comes in at right around 200 calories...2

the last subway I had was a footlong chicken and bacon ranch.... yum yum cost me about 1000 calories... well worth it. I even washed it down with a coke and a cookie1

you can go on their website and put in everything that you got on your sandwich, including bread, cheese, condiments etc. and it gives you the nutritional value. It won't be exact because people make the sandwiches and sometimes they are light handed and sometimes they are heavy handed. I usually get a foot long on 9 grain wheat, no cheese and a bunch of veggies with light mayo ends up being 640 calories for 2 meals.4

I use the calculator on line to build my sandwich. Go to the All sandwiches, and click on the one you want. On the right it has the nutrition info. Under that, it says calculate yours. Click on that and it will let you add/remove ingredients and update the nutrition info accordingly. I'll do that and take a picture and use that when I order. Not that I go to Subway much - not a big fan of sandwiches most of the time. I think you used to be able to start from scratch, and select the meats as well, but that seems to have disappeared.0

There's a great harvest across the street from my office. They make a good grilled cheese, the rest is meh, and it's not a sub.1 -

What I do to figure out Subway calories is go to their list of sandwiches (click here), choose the sandwich I want, then click "Calculate yours" to figure out the nutritional value.
According to Subway's default settings for the turkey breast and ham (which is 6", 9-grain wheat, no cheese, cucumbers, green peppers, lettuce, red onions, and tomatoes with no sauce), that's all the 280 calories that was posted on the board. That's really not much more than your soup and fruit. If you want a sub, eat a sub!1
