I am new to road riding. Rode some social rides last summer. Up to 40 Miles's per ride but usually 20-30. I live in east TN WHERE THERE ARE NO BIKE LANES! Scares me to ride alone out there. But I'm going to try it. I'm new to TN so I worry about getting lost too. And the dogs that run after me! Do you recommend any bike handling skill exercises or classes? Or should I just go do it?0

By the sound of it, riding one handed whilst shooting dogs with a magnum pistol held in the other!0

Any paved bike paths in your area? Wear bright colors if riding on the road, but be super careful. Better to ride with another if at all possible.0 -

Because I live in Kansas and am not sure from day to day if I can ride outside vs. indoors on the trainer I am going to base this months goal on minutes vs. miles. I'm going to shoot for 15 hours/900 minutes of cycling this month.
Stats so far:
2/7 - 53 minutes (10.41 Outdoor Miles)
2/8 - 47 minutes (8.41 Outdoor Miles)
Total so far - 100 minutes (800 to go!)0 -
Well, friends, I took my bike out for the second time. It was just as tough as last week, tougher because I threw in a hill. I began to get worried when the cawing of the crows following me drowned out my music. Don't crows follow a dying animal? Or is that vultures? Maybe I watched too much Jungle Book as a goat. I digress. As the noise of the crows reached fever pitch, my ipod played "What Doesn't Kill You". My ipod always has my back. Though, right after I turned into the torrential rain, the song "Here Comes the Sun" started. We love our little cosmic joke.

Started running errands via my bike as I'm falling behind on my 100 mile/week pace. Super windy the past few days, but given the lack of hills in these parts, I really shouldn't complain.

Humbug. Falling behind, weather is rotten. Does swimming and doing lots of leg work count? Twice from 0545 to 0630??

Why all the dis on indoor trainers? In my experience indoor trainers, other than rollers (w/o added resistance), can provide a much higher/consistent intensity session than one could get outdoors. (see http://www.joefrielsblog.com/2011/01/indoor-vs-outdoor-bike-performance.html, http://www.livestrong.com/article/352088-indoor-trainers-vs-riding-outdoors/, http://www.ironman.com/triathlon-news/articles/2013/06/indoor-bicycle-training.aspx). Sure it's boring but when daylight is short or weather is not conducive, it's a valuable tool to keep and improve your fitness especially when coupled with a measurable matrix such as power (actual or virtual). The only thing missing is overall duration as 90 minutes is about the maximum that I can stay on the trainer, but I'll be in much better shape when the winter is done for those long/tough weekend miles.0

I just found this thread. I have never really ridden a lot; occasional joy ridding with the family was about it; however, back in December my van died and I have since started trecking the 10 miles to and from work on my bike. I have begun to realize that this is a very enjoyable and good for the body and soul thing. I ride roughly 150 miles each week including the weekends, and have never felt better. It is interesting to talk to many of the people I work with who find it hard to believe that someone would enjoy riding to work, but as I pass the traffic and cars on my way to and from I remember that I am not only doing better for my health, but the health of the planet as well. when you ride in a car or other vehicle, you miss out on your surroundings and are not able to notice the small things like the wonderful aromas of the flowers blooming on the trees or bushes you pass.0

Hi! I've never played in one of these threads before. I think I shall. I mainly mountain bike. When I have to I either ride my MTB on the pavement or steal my husband's CX bike (which I also use on the trainer). Officially joined a race team this year (although I'm not very fast). Really just looking to have fun and use it as motivation to train/ride more.
I strava (is that a verb now?). For the month of January I did 89.8miles, 11hr and 4min, with 5282ft of climbing (that's almost exactly a mile. Cool). This does include a few trainer rides. So I guess for February I'll aim for a full 100miles?0 -
Hi
Good for you! Teams are good, you learn and improve your skills and cycle further than you would by yourself.0
