The figures in the USDA database is without the peel. If you choose to eat the peel, you should weigh the peel separately, because the peel has a different number of calories per gram.

I'm sorry, but who on earth eats a banana peel?

my grandpa used to eat orange peels. I don't think he was daft enough to eat a banana peel.

I wonder if a nutribullet would mash up the skin? More importantly, are there any nutrients in the peel??

I checked the USDA nutrient database...the peel is NOT listed. Therefore, while I agree that common sense suggests the peel would have different nutrient information...there is no proof that the peel has a different number of calories per gram. Probably because MOST OF US don't eat the peel!

Cute. I don't think I've ever seen a banana that small

Well if you had, you wouldn't need this:

I only weigh what I eat (so no peel). One thing that makes things easier: usually all the bananas in the bunch (4-7 in one group usually) weigh the same. You just need to weigh one without the peel, you can assume the others will be the same weight. This way you just grab one and go, and you can log it later.

You must be buying magic bananas, because mine can vary significantly in a bunch.

I want a magic banana. Will it make my butt look tighter?

UHM, well.. it will make something else tighter......

LOL. I didn't know this thing existed before making the above comment. IT WAS FATE.

I weigh with the peel because I eat the peel for its fiber content.

ETA: Even though I'm sure the peel and the actual fruit don't have the same nutrition.

Just because you wouldn't do it doesn't mean others don't. Some people will cook it before eating it. I hear it is easier to eat when the banana is ripe. But I probably won't be eating it.

Well, no, I do not eat banana peels. I was just playing around, but I've been googling and found one study on the fiber in banana peels. However reputable it is..... It seems to be a decent amount.

And let us not forget Donovan's "Mellow Yellow". Of all the substances I smoked in the sixties, dried banana peels were not among them.

Well, I feel fantastic. Laughter is the best medicine. Personally, I do not weigh my bananas. I just select, large, medium or small and call it good.

For accurate logging you never assume. Just 10g of banana makes a difference of 10 calories and 2-3g of carbs. While that's not much if you did it for all things that are "close enough" you'd end up with less of a deficit, and then a post asking why you're not losing.

That's true, I never thought of that lol. I did weigh quite a few first, and they ended up being the same, so then I just assumed.

I can barely choke down a banana I can't imagine trying to eat the peel. I weigh them with no peal. I love the direction this thread went!

I weight the unpeeled banana before putting it on my oatmeal. However, the other day I wanted to eat my morning banana before going to the gym, and when eating a whole banana I have this thing of eating it out of the peeling. So, I weighed the banana with the peeling, ate the banana like a monkey, and then weight the peeling and subtracted that from the prior weight, and I had the gram amount for the banana. :)

    It works both ways. :D
