You are right that a severe restriction (for a short term) does change your attitude to food and hunger, a lot of what I thought was hunger was really habit and greed.

I've been doing 5:2 fasting for 10 months and find it very successful.
That's 2 non-consecutive days of 600 calories only (500 for women) but still very different to nothing but water. I would struggle with water only days to be honest.

Have you researched Brad Pilon's Eat Stop Eat fasting method?

Thanks for the information I appreciate that everyone is giving such different and personal input to this topic. I realize that fasting is a really touchy topic on mfp and in general. Thanks for giving me a more well rounded understanding of how you all have tried or use water fasting for a variety of reasons

Touchy topics on MFP unfortunitally bring in ALOT of negativity. i posted a forum asking information about the ITWORKS body wraps... and let me tell you.... people are plain rude.. and obviously dont know how to respect people.

Let us know how the water fasting goes!!

I dont think water fasting is bad... I am a Muslim so religiously once a year we have to fast for the month.. we fast (no water, liquids) from sunrise until sun set... dont worry as u do it u will get used to it... but keep in mind that u shud have a good breakfast and a good supper so that u are not depriving urself of any necessary nutrients
  • I don't do any fasting because of medical issues. Especially cutting out water, which I assume is water fasting. My doctor has told me if I did do any of it I'd be digging myself a grave with how many hours I work a week/volunteer work/always being active and busy.

That said, you need to find something that works for you. If you try it and don't like it, don't do it! There are a lot of books out there with different ideas and summaries, by different doctors, all walks of life, etc.

True fasting you are typically allowed water, except in Ramadan.

So you're only looking for people to say it's a good idea? Why would you immediately discount any response that's not what you want to hear? Sounds like you've made up your mind already.

    Good luck :flowerforyou:

I did alternate day IF for weight loss and now do 8:16IF for maintenance. But never water fasting-that sounds like a drag.

Try it. Some people need to do to learn. It's 3 weeks.

Eventually, you might come back and ask all those people that have successes doing it the right way, how they did it.

    Hint- it's about sustainability.

    But good luck :flowerforyou:

Give it a try. And when it doesn't work, perhaps come back and ask for things that work, instead of things you want to hear.

Hope this was positive enough. If not, here's some sunshine and lollipops.

If you insist on trying it, I would suggest that you have someone else looking after your kids if they are not old enough to look after themselves. I would predict that there's a good chance you will be tired/hungry/cranky/dizzy

I used to do intermittent fasting 1-4x/mo. It wasn't as hard to do physically as most people anticipate- it's just wrapping your brain around the concept of YOU doing it that's hard. But once you've done it once or twice, you've basically put that hardship behind you. Once you've made the decision to do it and follow through, you will have added to your mental list of "Things I Can DO" and that's always a great feeling  Don't let the nay-sayers drag you down! Unless you're hypoglycemic, that is...

I haven't read all the posts.

I did 5:2 intermittent fasting August to October last year. I was losing weight faster than I am now with a conventional calorie deficit. I thought i would find occasional extreme deprivation easier to handle psychologically than constant low level deprivation. After all, you just need to hold out until the next day when you eat freely again. I turned out to be wrong about that. I was eating at TDEE on my non fasting days.

If you are the type of person who handles occasional extreme deprivation well, I think it is a good method. It removes a lot of the inaccuracies of logging food and exercise compared to the MFP method. And you can make IF a permanent lifestyle change. My old GP (in another city) used to do this as his long term weight management method. He would fast one day a week whenever he noticed his weight was creeping up.

I don't do it intentionally, but there are days that all I get is water. I'm starving by midnight most of the time and then I just eat crap. If you are out most of that day then why don't you pack snacks to have instead of fast food?

The fact that you said you would be on the move all day long makes it sound like it wouldn't be a good day to do a complete fast. I would suggest a juice fast or intermittent fasting instead.

Just because someone may disagree with you doesn't mean that they're being negative. It just means that we're all different based on our own experiences. But anyways, this is not a good idea and I'm sorry that's not what you want to hear. If you want to detox for a day, that's different. But eat something, even if all you're eating that day is veggies, green tea, and hummus. If you fast for just a day, not only will your body go into starvation mode, but you will end up binging the next day or too. Trust me, I was 260 a few weeks ago and I did this one time as well. It doesn't work. Eat clean, exercise, and make time. It's that simple. Make a plan and organize yourself. Prep ahead. Losing weight is not easy. It's hard, it takes dedication, and there are no shortcuts. You just do it.

But if you decide to do this, good luck. I wouldn't recommend it but it's your life.

I've done it on and off usually only when I have hit a plateau. Its a huge mind over matter thing and you gain the weight back the next day, but I fin I can loose 2 pounds the week after. It basically acts as a shot to the system. I wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis.

OP, it sounds like you are planning on making your fasting day your busiest day of the week, is this correct?

Fasting for 24 hours once per week is really not that extreme and I don't know why it's so controversial. Check out Eat Stop Eat (2 24 hour fasts per week) or this site for a summary/review of some popular fasting protocols: http://www.precisionnutrition.com/intermittent-fasting

Also check out the "intermittent fasting" group here that someone linked to above. There are a lot of people doing this. Personally I do a 16 hour daily "fast" which is also not that big a deal (late breakfast).

that's not what I said at all I want peoples personal experiences with water fasting. which by the way for those of you who don't know a water fast is strictly consuming water NOT CUTTING IT OUT OF MY DIET, THAT WOULD BE SCARY TO ME I LOVE WATER
All I meant by no negativity was that I don't need anyone to put me down for exploring new options, I don't think I have ever met anyone who tried to lose weight and succeeded the VERY first time they tried something. No one is perfect that all I am saying and wanting to get first hand information from those who have tried it is why I posted.

Thank you for a sincere honest quote. I appreciate the constructive criticism. Way to go on staying strong with your weight loss and journey. You should be proud. For me the reason I WAS ( not really anymore ) considering fasting one day a week for the next few weeks was not for quick and easy weight loss it was more for a mental challenge and gaining a little more control over myself. Every Never Is Now and Now was about 2 years ago so its time to just do this thing and fight the good fight. I appreciate all of the good feedback I apologize if it seemed as if I was being childish with not wanting negativity but I have literally seen people get ripped apart on MFP for asking perfectly normal and reasonable questions. It just feels sometimes like some people just look on the message boards to prey on the weak and undecided. Funny how the most judgmental people on MFP are the ones who have already reached their goal weight. HONESTLY PEOPLE NO ONE IS PERFECT AND IF YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE NOW I GUARANTEE THAT WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY YOU WERE FAR FROM PERFECT.
Lets just give each other the support and knowledge that we need to make smart informed decisions and help reach our goals.
    Good luck to everyone.

See, I tried and failed at a bunch of different dumb things before I finally gave up and did something that worked. And each time I tried a goofy idea, my IRL friends were supportive and kind and told how this time it would work and how they knew somebody that knew somebody that this stupid idea worked for.

I wasted 5 years with that crap and blew up to almost 300 pounds. If I could go back and do it again, I wish that people would have been rude. I wish that, instead of trying to protect my feelings, they would have told me what I actually needed to hear. When I gave up on harebrained schemes I lost 50 pounds the right way and was able to keep it off. And it was easy.

At some point hopefully you'll start listening to the actual message instead of complaining for 3 pages over the special way you want the message delivered. I lost weight when I got focused on results instead of sunshine and lollipops

Chill out, Dude. If you want to fast, fast.

Negativity and negative experiences is 2 different things........

Negativity=smart *kitten* remarks, comments to bring OP down, disencouragement in a rude manner, etc.

Negative Experiences=people who have used this method or other fasting methods, known someone who has used this method, has read up on this method, or has anything to add to the feed in a manner that the OP can appreciate, and understand to not be hateful, etc.

Don't hate, just understand that the OP is wanting people to respond without attitudes.

*With that being said, is the Eat Stop Eat method a water fasting method or is it a general fasting method?

Please no negativity or lectures this is strictly a question. I know all about both the negative and positive points of view and studies on water fasting in general. I struggle with self control and the ability to stick to my healthy choices. I am just wondering if anyone has done intermittent fasting? I am a female 5ft 10in and 260lbs. I have had 2 children and a lot of bad eating habits as well as breaking my nightly one beer a night habit. I am staying under my calorie goals each day as well as getting plenty of different exercises but I have one day a week that I am out of the house most of the day and tend to steer towards bad choices ( fast food mostly) and we all know one bad day can be the downfall of any diet. I cant help but think if I water fasted this day it would be less harmful and maybe teach myself a little discipline at the same time. I am only thinking of trying this for a few weeks 3 max just until I get my mind on the right path.

IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY PLEASE JUST SKIP THIS POST YOUR COMMENTS WILL NOT BE WELCOME AND DONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO ME. IF YOU HAVE BAD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT SOMEONE OR JUDGEMENT TO PASS JUST REMEMBER WE ALL BELONG TO THE SAME WEBSITE FOR OUR OWN REASONS, MOST OF US TO LOSE WEIGHT AND GAIN POSITIVE SUPPORT AND MOTIVATION. WHILE I DO NOT ASK YOU TO SUPPORT OR AGREE WITH ANYTHING THAT I DO OR SAY, I WILL KINDLY ASK YOU TO REFRAIN FROM SPREADING NEGATIVITY IN WHAT SHOULD BE A POSITIVE PLACE TO VENT LEARN AND BETTER OURSELVES.

    Thanks for the help

So what you are really after OP is AFFIRMATION rather than other people's opinions or advice?

Never even thought of something like this. I suppose it would work for what you're trying to achieve, but I'm sure theres a better way. Someone earlier suggested packing portable things to eat and I think thats personally the best way to go.

I know how you feel. I posted a post on skipping just one meal in a day for a week and got lots of support but also ragged on for it! I was doing hard work basically construction on a garage my hubby and I are building over last weekend and lost 6 lbs in 7 days.

yesterday I replaced dinner with a protein shake and felt too full! lol For any one that is diabetic it is not a good idea to skip meals but if you are not then I see nothing wrong with having a liquid fast day. It certainly resets your body and makes you really think about what you are eating on those other days! I like to use broth because it feels soothing to me but have to watch the sodium!

Good luck and keep your chin up!

I did a kind of fasting diet years years ago...
wake up late as possible around 2-3 pm coffe without sugar
walking down the montain and come back.. very very hard and back then i was fit.
evening 8pm 500 calories usually i used to eat biscuits that i like (they don't contain chocolate)

However was a diet for 10 days I did 11 days and lost 5kg (11lbs)
But it is not worth when you finish the diet you put them all back ahuahua

I didn't tryied fasting but some days in my life happened. If you want to try I do suggest to replace water with green thé. Make it a home add, no calories liquid sugar and make it cold. At least it has some taste!!

I understand. I don't think you were being childish, I just think that it's hard sometimes to take in what other people have to say, because you think that you automatically know what's right for you. There are a lot of people that come on Myfitnesspal to prey and poke fun at each other, I agree. The best way to challenge yourself is to give up a food that you really love. In this case, it might be fast food. For me, when I first started my diet, I gave up cheese. I'm obsessed with cheddar cheese, I could eat a whole bag and I have absolutely no self control. So I gave it up for a long time, lost a bunch of weight, and now I add it back in moderation. It's hard when I have cheese in the house, I just want to take a large handful and put it on top of every single meal, but for the most part, I do know how to control myself with portions. And in your case, you should just give up fast food. That's a mental challenge in itself, I used to be obsessed with Zaxby's and Wendy's drive thru. Think of how much money you will save in the long run. I would not recommend intermediate fasting. If it works for some people for their own goals, that's their prerogative but I believe in feeding my body the food it deserves. If you're an on the go type of girl like me, buy Ziploc containers and prep all of your meals in advance. It's not as hard as it seems. It just takes practice then you get the hang of it. If you want a day of detox, eat a salad two times a day with some type of chicken on top, don't load it with unhealthy salad dressings (full fat ranch, etc) and drink maybe a smoothie for breakfast. You can do this. You can lose weight the healthy way. The mental challenges about weight loss does not come from fasting or giving up something all together. All together, it comes from changing your lifestyle and taking in every single emotion that you feel when you're inside the gym. But I believe you can do this the right way and that's all I am going to say. If you want to send me an add, I'd love to support you and give you any advice you need.
