I have been water fasting 2 days per week since about mid-September. I've lost about 15 pounds so far. I fast on Monday and Thursday each week. The other days, I try to eat clean. I don't stuff myself but I do eat anything I want. As a rule, I avoid sweets. Hope this helps.

I have done a water fast for 13 days, and highly recommend it. It's not just about weight, even if that is the part that seems most exciting, one's body purges many toxins that way. It's good physically, and it's good psychologically.

One feels hungry the first 2 days, and then you will feel no more physical hunger afterward. It gives you a joyful feeling, practically euphoric at times. I prefer long term fasting over day long fasts for the reason that the first 2 days are the ones with hunger pangs, so why keep going through the hardest days again and again. A lot of people give up right after passing the hardest part, so good to take a leap of faith and trust there is no physical hunger past day 2 and your stomach will become calm. You will have happy thoughts of beautiful food for a while, but that is very different and also pleasant, so nothing to be concerned about.

You will need to be able to rest when needed, and might need several near naps during any given day. It feels pretty good overall, but I had only two 12 hour periods of not feeling well generally on days 4 and 13 -- that was all.

When you count your calorie deficit, you will realize that 'after' you put the water weight back on at the end of your fast, you have still lost twice as much weight as you are supposed to by not eating those missing calories. And that double weight is off for good (unless you horribly stuff yourself in the future, of course). So I have no idea why this happens, but losing weight by water fasting has shown to be considerably more efficient than having those touted many small meals per day.

Also, one other good benefit of water fasting is that you keep exceptional muscle tone, and I have no idea why this is -- perhaps from no carb ingestion??? -- but it has been my experience; whereas on a normal weigh loss diet it's easy to get jiggly, especially if consuming a lot of carbs.

If you want to water fast, more power to you! I would love to do this again too!

I realize this thread is a year old but people will still come across it in a google search. I was very recently at a 3 day conference on nutrition. A highly respected physician was there from The Cleveland Clinic. He told me that it is perfectly safe to water fast 1-2 days per week.

I tried water fasting a while back. Personally, I wouldn't suggest it. A liquid fast, maybe, but not just water. If you choose to do a water fast, you should build up to it. Cut back on meats and carbs a day or two beforehand and up your fruit and vegetable consumption. When you do a water fast, you will likely feel weak, dizzy and possibly nauseous. I suggest doing a liquid fast once a week instead. No Sugar Added Juices, Low Sodium V8 and Low Sodium Chicken/Beef Broth. This will give you a few calories to work with and should help with the weakness. Try fasting on a day that you won't be burning many calories. Sundays work best for me. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
  • Don't listen to any of these people that tell you not to do so. Water fasting once a week is perfectly healthy and natural. I well say be sure to take a multi vitamin or do lemon with your water. Our bodies get very acidic from all the toxins that are in the world today and acidity is what causes illness including cancer. By doing a water fast one a week you are creating alkalinity in your body and jump starting your immune system. I know a woman who has done it for 40 years and is in her 60's and is the healthiest person I know. People need to think more holistically and go back in history when they think about diet habits.

Something to consider... if you whisper something to yourself, then the only one who can criticize you... is you. When you say it to other people, you have both exposed your idea/ interest/ desire to their assessment of your idea/ interest/ desire, but to their response or reaction, be it good, bad or indifferent. You may not like their response, but you've given them the forum (pun intended) to express it.

The gift and curse of such an opportunity MFP affords is, you don't go home with any of these folks (unless, of course, you do). Everything offered is taken with a grain of salt (as long as it fits in your macros), good, bad or... well, you know.

No one likes to be insulted (unless you're a troll), but consider that most of us are snickering 14 year old boys scouring the site for side boob pics and folks we can antagonize with gifs and cat memes.

So why were we pulling up this old thread? I think someone is bored.
Water Fasting is legit (this is where you hold off all food except drinking water). Some people use the week to measure their calorie intake, and take all or part of one day out of the week to fast. It's supposed to help with insulin response, inflammation and more.

I tried this a few years ago and didn't succeed, I was deep into extreme binge eating, but now I have come to eat somewhat normally. I didn't start it on purpose this time, but I have one day a week when I only eat breakfast and a tiny snack. For others it might not work but it's helped me extremely with recognising hunger and being mindful. I get full quicker now and have more control. It is all about discipline, do whatever you think would work and listen to your body. Have lots of water, tea and make sure it helps you stay on track for the rest of the week. Good luck hope it goes well :)

Water fasting is awesome! Ive done it 3 times for 4 days each time. I hope to go for a longer amount of time one day. I'm also diabetic. Things I love about the water fast is the mental clarity, extreme energy and overall feeling of wellbeing.

I coffee and tea fast two to three days a week. It's called intermittent fasting. Haven't tried just water. I imagine I'd find it easy enough, I'd probably just sleep all day!

Oh hell, zombie thread got me.

My husband has done it occasionally but only for religious reasons. He once did a single day fast 1x a week for about 5 or 6 weeks. He's perfectly healthy. Cutting out chips though is what caused him to lose weight, but he wasn't trying to lose weight with his fast. Go for it if you want to do it.

The method you select is your business. However, the key isn't to lose weight but to lose and not gain it back. Have you researched Intermittent Fasting? IF is another method to discipline yourself while still meeting your body's required level of nutrients, properly fueling your workout, and losing weight.
