    What is "healthy"?

    Forget healthy. It's sad.
Peel potatoes. Boil. Drain. Add butter, if desired. Mash with manual (non-electric) potato masher (for the workout ;) ). Add milk/yogurt/sour cream/what-you-will, salt, pepper, chives, garlic, as desired. Eat. Savor how much better this is than reconstituted dried potato flakes.

It's not healthy or unhealthy. It's kinda gross though. Homemade mashed taters are so good.

Sad is a good way to put it. Making proper mashed potatoes is so easy.

I much prefer the texture of "hand-mashed" potatoes over machine whipped. I like getting the occasional small lump. Means someone made this by hand!

I would suggest adding a little Creme Fraiche if you happen to have access to some. Decadent.

They're good as binding for tuna patties?

Wait, are you eating them straight out of the box or asking if eating them in general (after you've prepared them) is good?

I'm pretty sure it's not natural. I prefer baked potatoes

    Like...straight out of the box??

Unhealthy...meh maybe, maybe not. But definitely weird.

OK. I guess I can accept that. I think I have lots of other things in my kitchen that would work equally well as binder (such as crackers, oats, bread crumbs...), and that I might use for other stuff as well, but if potato flakes float your boat...

Wow, I hadn't thought of it that way. I'm imagining dry, then kind of glue-like as your saliva goes to work.

I like boxed mash potatoes just fine...but prepared. I'd probably end up like the people that do the cinnamon powder challenge if I tried to eat straight from the box

I don't understand why certain things have shortcuts. Making real mashed potatoes is so easy, having a shortcut in a box makes no sense.

only healthy if you eat the box as well

Because they are easier to store/last longer and not all places have fresh/good veggies (even potatoes) consistently.

It's disgusting. Boxed potatoes are gross. Just eat actual potatoes that taste good.

Whyyyy. Proper potatoes are much tastier. I can only see boxed being OK if it's literally the only food option left in the house. I've experienced those scrounging days before.

After decades upon decades of peeling, boiling, baking, cooking, etc etc yada yada yada spuds, I have a box in the cupboard. Don't get ate very often cuz am not a spud eater, more of a yam eater, but when I wants a mashed tator, they get cooked up and ate.

    Carry on.

I really like the Idahoan mashed potatoes that come in the foil pack. They don't taste at all like the nasty "instant potatoes" I remember having as a kid. I discovered them accidentally when I had an abscess tooth last year and was at the grocery store purchasing anything and everything that was soft enough for me to eat. They're fairly low calorie & so easy to make. Obviously the real thing is better but regardless of how much I love mashed potatoes, I don't think they're worth making from scratch most of the time, especially for a single person. Whatever works for you. Haters gonna hate!

Yup. One time I made my potato leek soup too thin and had ran out of taters. This stuff worked amazingly.
