Eating Mashed Potatoes out of a Box

Maybe I'm an oddball but I like instant mashed potatoes. Maybe not as much as real mashed potatoes, but I still think they're good. It's probably because that's what I was used to eating in my childhood because it's what my mom made most of the time.0

I'd rather starve, tbh. Or eat condiments.0 -

I like them as well0 -
Being Irish - boxed potatoes are a cardinal sin. A family member finding this in the pantry would immediately call for an intervention. May as well have a bag of meth in the pantry. That said, having grown up eating potatoes every day of my life til I left the house I rarely ever eat them now. If you want to eat potato flakes go for it, but why? Real ones taste so much better.

Guess I'm odd. I prefer boxed over any homemade. Meh. different strokes for different folks0

They aren't really unhealthy. It just depends on what you prefer, what you want to get out of them, and how they are prepared.
Some people might add way more fat or salt or whatever to their mashed potatoes so the fresh potato version may end up being less healthy in some respects but some boxed stuff might have less of some nutrients or more sodium.
Get your box of instant mashed potatoes. Look at the nutrition info on the label. Find a mashed potato recipe you might use with nutrition information. Compare. Which one seems healthier/better for your situation?0 -
I used to be lazy and fix the flakes from a box. But, now I just get a 5 lbs bag of potatoes, fix em and they last for awhile. I put 1/2 cup of milk and 4 tbsp of butter for the whole 5lb bag, add salt and pepper... mmmmmmmm.0

Peel potatoes. Boil. Drain. Add butter, if desired. Mash with manual (non-electric) potato masher (for the workout ). Add milk/yogurt/sour cream/what-you-will, salt, pepper, chives, garlic, as desired. Eat. Savor how much better this is than reconstituted dried potato flakes.
This.
Or if you are feeling super lazy get the little potatoes, add olive oil and salt, mix around, roast. (Or do this with any potatoes you like but spend 2 minutes chopping them.)0 -

Ha, this was my question.salembambi wrote: »only healthy if you eat the box as well

They're great for thickening soups.
Yes! I would say they are in our pantry primarily as a thickener. I don't make them straight up very often, unless I'm super crunched for time. But I actually make mashed turnips a lot and because they can be a little thin, I usually mix in some instant potatoes. Mashed cauliflower, too.

I like my cauliflower and turnips roasted.0

They were a staple in my dorm room since they only needed hot water. This was the caveman days before microwaves, etc and all you could have in your room was a hot pot and popcorn popper. Hot plates were illegal and would get confiscated when they did room inspections.
I haven't eaten them since, although I used to keep a box for thickening soups but they got so old before using up that I no longer keep them around.0 -
once upon a time i bought the flavored ones, in packets. I also used to eat minute rice. then I learned how to make rice and mashed potatoes, and the rest was history.0

I also use them for thickening and my husband likes them prepared (of course, I guess if you pour enough gravy on anything it's going to taste pretty good).0
