I don't wear them in the gym and I've never scraped my legs, however in (some?) competitions they are compulsory, as they also stop you scraping your legs and getting blood on the bar.0 -

They protect your shins a bit from the bar which can give you a nasty scrape. That's the only benefit I can think of.
That's about it really. I've gotten a few scraps when I started lifting (I'm clumsy and uncoordinated) so I started wearing my husbands ugly thick work socks, then switched to cuter brighter colors for fun.0 -

I should get a rainbow bright pair. My only pair are boring, black compression socks. I figure I'll earn goofy socks once I'm repping 5 plates+0
