Actually you are not supposed to eat at maintenance post surgery.
You need to increase your caloric intake. Multiply your weight by a minimum of 15 and that is your caloric intake you NEED daily.
Healing takes calories. You need those calories to heal faster. If you restrict calories post surgery you are not going to heal properly.
With major surgery, yes. Foot surgery, not so much. It is important to keep your protien up, but she's not going to need a caloric surplus.
Yeah - this isn't anything totally major, but it is surgery that will have my on the DL for about 3 weeks.
OK, so I should eat at above maintenance, have high protein foods, fiber, stool softeners, codeine (lololol)
Seriously though...my maintenance calories (according to IIFYM) are 1655, but my weight multiplied by 15 is a whopping 2265 calories. I just don't know if I want to eat that much...I'll get fat again for sure
I totally downplayed my surgery too, because I had two laparoscopic surgeries in the past and was up and around doing normal things in the same week. I'm still flopping around like a fish out of water trying to get out of bed some mornings. Like SwankyTomato said if you're having bone or ligaments messed with then yeah it's still major. If it's not, then why are you banking on opioid pain meds?
ETA for the last line you said ... healing your body is far more important than a couple pounds you might put on in 3 weeks.
I was just joking!
And yeah - it does involve messing with a bone, but I guess since I've had major surgery before that had me on disability for 6+ weeks this one seems relatively simple.

AFter surgery, you need to eat at maintenance or above for healing.0

You must mean 1.5, correct?
Even so, maintenance calories is correct.

Seriously, I would eat at maintenance and disregard advice that says to eat over that.

Well, I'm thinking that maybe I'll ask my doctor when I go to him for pre-op clearance in a few weeks. I certainly don't want to eat above maintenance if I don't have to.0

After losing about forty pounds last year I started to get active and I loved it. Then I had surgery and I was instructed "no core" exercises. Every time I went in for a checkup I asked for clearance and then started up again as soon as I could.
Anything on the legs or feet is tough because it also affects your mobility.
I think you will have to watch your calorie intake very carefully until that glorious day when you can start moving seriously again. I've been collecting gentle exercises for people who are carrying a lot of weight. Maybe you can use some of them.

Your body needs calories to heal. If they are cutting into bone, you need above maintenance.
This is so you heal properly.

Thanks @jgnatca ! But thanks to MFP I'm no longer carrying a lot of weight I'm just a few pounds away from my goal!0

In my personal experience pain meds and the pain itself are a great appetite suppressant for at least the first week or so. That and the fatigue. Heck, even when I just broke my big toe, the pain and fatigue made eating less appealing. Eat when you're hungry, make healthy choices, and take things slow (don't go crazy trying to get back into your routine as soon as the boot is off) and you'll probably be just fine!0

Excellent idea. Your doctor knows the detail of what you're having done and what recovery is required. Mention the advice on here (there's a link to the source for the x15 logic) and see what the doctor says. You could also ask how soon you can resume weight loss and get his/her advice. You might be back on your feet in 3 weeks, but you body may need longer to fully heal, in which case you may need to feed it well for longer.
Your doctor's advice comes before weight loss. Like I said earlier, if you do put any back on it'll be a small fraction of what you've lost, and you'll be back on track in no time afterwards.
Good luck for the op!

Yay you! The exercises for heavy people I figure a few of them can be done by people like you that have to be off their feet. I'm talking exercises you can do flat on your back.0
