American style Pancakes (flap jacks)... to be clear.

I love pancakes with blueberries cooked into them and a generous amount of maple syrup. However, I find I am only able to fit them in on BIG calorie burn days and would like to find a tasty, slightly lower calorie recipe to meet my craving when it happens.

I have tried the banana & egg white version, but it isn't quite the same and am trying to go the more traditional batter style cake.

I have taste tested through several brands of sugar fee syrups and found one that meets my taste requirements and is only 15 cal per 1/4 cup ( I generally use about a 1/2 cup on a serving) compared to the maple syrup I was using ( 210 cals per 1/4 cup...ouch).

My current brand of buttermilk pancake batter is about 250 cals per serving (1/3 cup dry mix, plus veg oil, 1 egg, & milk) and yields 2 decent sized cakes if made to the directions on the box.

I cut it down just using 3/4 unsweetened almond milk and 2 egg whites to about 150 calories plus the 1/2 cup of blueberries.

I have tried reducing mix and adding vanilla protein power as well, to at least make the calorie count more beneficial other than straight carbs.

Has anyone found a specific lower calorie mix or created a recipe that is comparable in taste to "regular" pancakes yet has a generally lower calorie count or at least a comparable calorie count with good taste?

Rick

It depends on what matters to you. I was doing pancakes around the 4th of July with the Bob's Red Mill whole grain mix plus an egg per 2 pancakes (vs. the smaller amt of eggs plus oil recommended on the side--I was making one serving with slightly more protein than it otherwise would have), plus blueberries. For me that worked and I found it quite tasty, but the maple syrup substitutes did not, but if you need fluffy traditional buttermilk pancakes it might not work for you at all. (I did make a rhubarb and strawberry sauce like you might use on ice cream, but with no sugar, that worked fine as a syrup, and I might start experimenting with more fruit syrups.)

It's not super low cal, though--the mix (in the amount I use) is about 180 calories and I didn't care to use egg whites, although that would probably be fine, so it ended up being about 285 with the egg and blueberries. The strawberries plus rhubarb were really low cal. Too low protein for my preferred breakfast, but tasty as a change-up, and on the 4th I added some bacon. (I like 350-450 cal breakfasts, though.)

    1/2 cup rolled oats
    1/2 cup cup cottage cheese
1 or 2 egg depending on your macros

    Optional:
    1/2 banana
    hand full of mixed nuts

Throw it all in a blender. Then cook them up with some coconut oil. They are incredible.

I use this recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/fluffy-pancakes-2/ and I use 1% milk (you could use fat-free to lighten even further) and if I have egg substitute on hand, I will use that instead of an egg. (if the link doesn't come through, it is the recipe for "fluffy pancakes" on allrecipes.com. I've been using that recipe forever and my family loves it. Calories depend on the size of your pancakes, obviously. I make small sized cakes, so the calories per cake are very low.

    Last night I made:
    1/4 cup raw oats
    1/4 cup cottage cheese
    1/2 cup egg white
    1/2 scoop protein powder

Throw in the blender and bam! They turned out really well.

I make these using 1% milk too. They're so delicious.

I've made these as well http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1278100 and obviously they were pretty good, as I posted the recipe, and lower calories, but taste-wise you just can't compare to the real thing.
