A word of warning about squats.

It is very likely that your squat form was off and you were using too much weight for your experience level. Squatting, with proper form, actually helps improve your core strength.0

I would recommend still doing them. First make sure you have proper form. Try starting with just body weight. Or work 2 muscle groups at the same time and combine a squat with a shoulder press using 3 or 5 lb dumbbells.
eta: Also, stretch before and after. Stretch all the muscles in the area: butt, inner thighs, quads, hamstrings and even some gentle stretches for lower back. Some people will say to never do static stretches with "cold" muscles, but I do all the time and have never had problems. Otherwise you could walk ~10 minutes first then stretch.0
