I'm Julie, two days in on the PSMF diet and it's really rough to say the least. Anyone else on this kind of diet?

With a deficit as big as you're supposed to have on that kind of diet, I would imagine it would be rough. Is your doctor supervising this?0
-
Wow, this is a scary diet. It even requires a "refeeding" phase when you are done with it.
"It is important to bear in mind the PSMF diet (Protein-Sparing Modified Fast) is, in fact, a medical fast designed for rapid weight loss in those who need to lose weight quickly, and is followed under strict medical supervision."
So, as the poster said above, are you seeing a doctor? Apparently you can seriously mess yourself up with this kind of diet.
Oh, and for those of you that don't know what this diet is: "A PSMF diet consists of an average of 400 to 800 calories a day with no carbs or fat."0 -
Wow that's a tough diet to maintain. How long do you have to do this. It doesn't sound like something you should be on for long. Is there a medical reason for you to be on this?0
-
You're supposed to be taking a lot of supplements/vitamins/minerals along with it as well.0

I believe additional fluids too.0 -
Yes, it is the hardest adjustment I have ever made in restructuring my daily diet. I have a lot To lose and this was the suggested route, not my first choice (via Dr and nutritionist w/CLE clinic). Lol. I'm very motivated to make a change to be active and more comfortable with me! However, ending day two has me wondering what the sam heck I signed up for!!! #givemestrenght0

How much do you have to lose? Do you have a medical condition/reason to get it off very very fast?0 -
This is kind of a personal question but is there a health problem or condition that requires this kind of rapid weight loss? Or is this just something the doctor threw out there? Just by looking at your face in your picture, I don't see you being hugely overweight.0

Yes I am prescribed several supplements and drinking almost 90 oz of water a day. This will last for 6 months minimum as I was told unless I meet my goal early. Wanting to go from 270 to 160 and that's not even as low as I'm "supposed " to be but I think it's a weight I can maintain. The purpose is for people in my situation to lose as much as possible. It also is for those needing to lose the weight for surgery etc.

Why does the weight loss have to be rapid?0 -
Right now I do not have any condition that is any type of threat. There were other options but she wanted me to yield the most results the quickest. My only issue is extreme back pain that cannot be pinpointed and at the assumption after several tests and specialist , the weight is most likely the issue.
Also this diet I'm on is 800 cal 20g of carbs, 10 oz of protein, and I get to use reduced fat fats, no fruit0 -

I gotta be honest, I'm not a doctor but this diet seems like something you should not do. I get the back pain part but this seems a little too extreme. Plus, it's not sustainable. I have back problems as well (like REALLY bad) and exercise has really helped. Especially weight training and yoga. Your ultimate goal should be a lifestyle change. Although, I guess if you're starving you'll concentrate less on your back pain. lol0 -
You have to maintain this for six months? It seems a tad extreme, especially when there isn't a life threatening medical condition behind it. I wish you luck!0

Why does the weight loss have to be rapid?[/quote]
I'm in so much pain with back walking around the block is painful or going grocery shopping. Other than that I'm not quite sure. I mean I want to get it off quick. Considering the weight I have to lose and the statistics of success, this is really a great option for me. I'm not trying to do bariatric and hopefully I can get conditioned for a long term life change. I like to to think of it as a reboot. I mean I'm 5'1 and supposed to be like 110, which is not gonna happen, and need to get it off. I don't think a program yielding lower results would be as motivating. Believe me I'm not excited about the diet. I'm excited for the loss!!!

I feel like 1,200 would be more sustainable, while still giving you great results. Maybe you could discuss that idea with your doctor?0

Well. Play it safe, please. This kind of diet is not really promoted on these forums. If you feel like it, have a look at the success pages here and see the people who have lost (literally hundreds) of pounds by calorie counting. Wish you the best of health.0 -

Alright but just be careful okay? Another thought. What is your job? Are you on your feet a lot? Years ago I used to work in retail and was on my feet all the time. My sciatica in my leg got so bad that I had to walk with a cane when I was 22.0 -

It's fine you have your personal beliefs, thoughts, and experiences. However, you cannot assume what is right for one is right for all. I had thought reaching out would find fellowship in weight loss, not critique and discouragement.
My health is my priority for once in the past 6 years of my life and I'm taking the hugest step out of my comfort zone to make a huge change. Yes, I'm trusting a medically proven weight loss plan in existence for 30 years at one of the worlds leading medical facilities.
Anyone struggle with significant weight issues their whole life? Or need to lose over 100lbs? That's another person!!! Yes there are other options, of course but I'm responsibly choosing mine, not recklessly and haphazardly depriving myself food, I'm denying my body the excess weight.
Thanks and Stay healthy peeps!

Mmmmmm...... I wouldn't normally get involved in these debates. BUT....I have done Stupid diets in my past ( yup, they don't last!), but if my doctor told me to, I would be there every step of the way......if it was that bad, and I NEEDED drastic action for surgery. I think I would do whatever it took....
BUT, I am not sure I am reading this post right. This is not the case????
Hun, Julie Ellul.......if you need to, then fine; but if you don't...then don't. There are better ways and they are more manageable and long lasting. And that, unless you truly needing drastic action ( which, I am sorry to say, I doubt, from what you have said), is what you need to aim for.
Anyone with extra weight is going to struggle with back pain, going upstairs, going shopping, trying to break into a trot.......the list goes on! Anyone with a large amount of weight is going to feel those things! Don't get confused as to what is normal weight gain signals and what isn't!
Having said all that, you came looking for support. You will get it - you had to take the well meaning advice first though!- but now you will get full support, no matter what anyone thinks! So count on support........peeps just concerned about you! Take that in a good way....
I don't request friends - just got here!- but happy to accept them.......
Don't feel bad at the responses you at your diet plan - it really is people caring about you and your future.0 -

Julie.....can I offer a word of caution about the MFP forums.......trust me when I tell you the reply's you have had have been some of the most well mannered and thoughtful responses I have seen in these forums when someone posts asking advice about a diet plan....and one as extreme as this one will normally provoke a barrage of insults and head shakers......
Please have a read through the forums about diets and detoxes etc...and I am sure you will see that what you have got here was no where near like what it could be......lol.....
Good luck with your plan....if it works for you then that's great....I generally stay out of these posts as I am a fat 240lb bloke that needs to eat.....so I like the fact MFP lets me eat but gives me a figure to eat to that means I will still lose weights...
Setting your goals up correctly in here can allow you to eat twice as much if not more than your currently eating and still probably lose 1 or 2 lbs a week.....in a controlled way that does not give you hunger pangs (that much) and can help to change your lifestyle....
The way I see your plan is that after the 6 months of the diet....you will still need to re-educate yourself on healthy eating at a normal level........so to me you are wasting 6 months of work that could be done now...while losing weight...
I hope you can stick to your plan for the long term.....and that it does not create more issues doing it (I.E. Binge eating....or less nutrients.....etc) but I am sure the doctor will be keeping a close eye on you throughout......I hope so anyways....
Good Luck...Be interested to keep tabs on your progress on it too if you can.....prove us all wrong in 3 months....0 -

Yeah I get what you're saying, it just come off harsh when you're 2 days into a life change. To be honest I'm way better than I thought I would be doing this and I'm trying what was recommended. I am being monitored and I have a support system. I'm hoping to prove myself capable! Hopefully I get the weight off sooner so i can retrain my body. Trust me this girl needs hard limits0 -
fatjon73 speaks the truth!
And we do have your back,.....so best of luck and please KEEP COMMUNICATING!!! Don't let what you perceive as negative comments put you off. Like the man said, they are nothing to what I have come across just in a couple of days here as I have been trawling through some threads.
It is easy to be sensitive at testing and trying times, especially when feeling vulnerable. We all been there!!!0
