I had minor surgery on Saturday and since the general anisthetic, nothing is *ahem* moving. So what do you reckon? Fiber-One bars, or go straight for the sugar-free candy?

Oh dear, don't they um...keep you in the hospital for that?

Anywho, personally, for me it's dunkin donuts iced coffee or applesauce. Seriously.

Water and fiber help move things along.

I dunno... I've heard that sugar free candy really gets 'er going. A couple coworkers ate a bag without realizing it was sugar free and well... It did the job ;)

Nah, it was just day surgery. I even used it as an excuse to eat pizza all weekend which would usually result in.... results. But no dice!

Black coffee, fibre (vegetables, apples, psyllium husk), some fats.

I'd avoid the sugar free lollies. You want things to move out of your butt, not FEEL like butt.

It's probably the narcotics, not the anesthesia.

My doctors have always recommended Colace (Docusate) after surgery. It won't do anything drastic.

give it a couple days and keep your fluids and fiber up. (husband just went through this a couple weeks ago.) if you don't move in a day or two, maybe call your doctor and they can prescribe you something. they sent my husband home with meds for that.

Oh, the haribo sugar-free gummy bears will definitely have things moving right out of your butt.

Ya, IIRC opiates (which are in your painkillers) slow things down. I had the same problem after my surgery.

Honestly, the docusate sodium is the best idea. It's the easiest on your GI system. The mag sulfate will cause diarrhea. docusate is a stool softener and very mild and will not cause diarrhea like mag sulfate will. you can get the docusate at wal-mart for about 2-3 dollars.

    Magnesium
    metamucil
fat (my favorite is a buttered grilled cheese with a fried egg ((runny yolk obviously))

Call me in a few hours and tell me that doesn't work. :)

Of course you could take some over the counter laxatives or a laxative tea.

If this is the same as Dulcolax, i wouldn't call it "mild".

I took it once and i had literally THE WORST GI pain i've ever had (even after suffering through some ulcers and an H. Pylori infection). The rumbling, cramping, and HORRIBLE pain did not stop!!!!!

I had a similar but less intense experience with tea with senna in it.

My point being, if you can handle the problem without taking something i suggest you do!

:D Thanks all! I've tried the fats and the water and the extra fibre, but I'm getting to the point of feeling like I have the lower abdominal version of a chest burster about to hatch. I'm leery of over the counter lax, scared they will hit me on the train on the way home LOL though my experience with sugar free candy is much the same risk...

Magnesium citrate. In small doses does not cause diarrhea.

Magnesium is still a much harsher medication and has other side effects. It causes cramping.
