    Spicy foods, keep well hydrated, high protein diet, build muscle, omega-3s, stimulants, sleeping, eating, keeping your thermostat low.

    Unfortunately that isn't how the it works.

    We have 2 choices when it comes to increasing metabolism.
    1. Increase our body mass by adding more muscle or more fat
    2. Burn more calories by more exercise, work

    I exercise and diet and can't lose weight. I'm 42. I assume my age has something to do with it, but idk. I have low t4 but tsh is normal so dr won't put me on thyroid meds. Any suggestions to boost my metabolism?

    This thread just explained that metabolism can't be boosted.

    I lost weight perfectly at 44 through diet and exercise. 44 pounds, incidentally :)

    When you say you exercise and diet, do you count calories? Do you weigh everything with a food scale?

    You can lose fat, you just need to figure out your Calorie needs and eat at a calorie deficit.
    Yes of course age and thyroid issues lower your Base metobolic rate or BMR but CICO still applies and works.
    It may take a bit more work to find your numbers since BMR calculators only factor in age but it isn't that hard to determine you number.

    Suggestions to boost metabolism, add muscle mass and or exercise more. Short of fixing your thyroid those are your options.

    nope age is not a factor..I am almost 43 and have lost 53lbs...calorie counting and exercise.

    I'm older than you, and I have a dodgy thyroid (I am medicated though) and I lose weight.

    You just need to figure out what calorie deficit level will work for you. It might be lower than online calculators will predict.

    Regarding your thyroid, though, do you know the number your last TSH was? Do you have any symptoms of hypothyroidism? (Feeling cold, fatigue, dry skin, brittle nails)

    This absolutely works for me. Been doing it for 3 straight weeks after trying everything else and I'm never hungry or tired. :)

    (47 - just lost 52 pounds over 8 months and am fitter and stronger than ever .. weigh your food OP, try progressive weight lifting)

    Lmao, It is not an excuse it is a fact. If you do not factor in age when determining your Calorie needs and just ate like you did when you were 18 you would likely be massively over eating.

    true, but it's marginal (a couple of hundred of calories .. and how much is from reduced activity / reduced musculature) .. so you either cut down your calories or increase your calorie burn to maintain your weight as you age... like, oh I dunno, CICO?

    Someone said age isn't a factor. It is, technically, a factor. Just not a very big one.

    Not significantly and I would hazard a guess that some is to do with loss of LBM as you age. What does often change is activity levels.

    Off the top of my head, I think it is about 100 calories every 10 years. Not huge, but it is a factor.

    I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that's more related to the fact that I'm not playing football, basketball, baseball, running track, and spending 12 hours a day walking around Six Flags than to my metabolic rate.

    I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that's more related to the fact that I'm not playing football, basketball, baseball, running track, and spending 12 hours a day walking around Six Flags than to my metabolic rate.

    Exercise certainly increases your your TDEE more then age affects your BMR that is true.

    You are completely missing the point. No one is saying there isn't a difference but it isn't something to write home about. Go ahead and pull up a calculator and look at the difference in calories between my age and your age and tell me if it's so big number.

    So don't write home about it, it is still a true statement and is factored into your BMR and TDEE. If you choose to ignore it that is your business.

    The difference between my BMR at 18 and my BMR at 51 is 165 calories per day. Or about one fewer Snickers per day.
