Get your mind in the right place or you're going to fail. Successful weight loss and maintenance mostly happens in your head. The rest is as easy as calories and math.

I think we'll just assume that.

Actually, no. A lot of people don't realise that and think they have to eat special 'diet' food in order to lose weight.

If I go way over cals and don't burn enough to cover, don't feel defeated and give up - get back on the horse and start again :)

Motivation only gets you so far. Make it a habit, and you'll begin to find you don't need as much "motivation" 24/7--it just becomes something you do.

Fair enough. More accurately, I will just assume that. :)

Love this. Similarly, I don't think a person necessarily has to be "motivated" to begin a weight loss program if they are willing to start with one small change and stick with it.

Intermittent fasting to make sticking to a deficit easier.

Forge about "forever" - focus on 12 weeks at a time.

Moderate your expectations and actions. (Don't expect to weight every week, don't expect to lose all your weight quickly, don't cut your calories to the bare bottom, don't go from sedentary couch potato to a full out exercising 2 hours a day 7 days a week straight out of the starting gate.)

Pretty much, inch by inch, row by row.

Once you've lost the weight, you are not done. It's a lifestyle change and you need to keep logging as long as you want to keep the weight off.

Don't let excuses or rationalization interrupt my plan for food or exercise.

Eat all the food. Seriously, I was crippled by not knowing what to eat with all the conflicting diets and info. Once I accepted that I could just eat it all and count my calories, it was magic.

Homemade super low-cal soups in big batches. Google "zero point soup" Serious I lost 60 of my 90 pounds because of it.

Count your calories and eat less than you burn. Only advice I seemed to need.

Don't get discouraged by fluctuations on the scale.

(and of course CICO, but that's a given)

Log in everyday. Even if you had a binge day or one where you barely felt like eating, log everything. Don't give up on logging.

Keep your eye on the prize. For me, it's looking HOT in a bikini, fitting back into my clothes, and feeling and looking my best, not to mention cutting down on my risk of diabetes, etc.

Big fan of soup! Would eat it every day if my family wouldn't rebel.

This one is important. You have to be ready mentally.

Create a deficit to lose weight, no need to jump or leap through hoops.

Start with small goals. For example: make it to the gym 3-4x a week. Lose 10 pounds. Lose enough to fit comfortably in that tight dress. Eat as healthy as you can for a whole week. Lose 2 inches on the belly. No alcohol for a month. Obviously these are just examples, do what works for you. Once you've achieved the small goals make bigger ones!

    Good luck :)

Oh here's another: Don't weigh yourself 10 times a day. Don't even weigh once a day. Do it once a week and measure yourself and keep track.

Agreed. Notice a couple of commenters mentioned "patience"? Nothing makes me more impatient than jumping on the scale looking for miniscule decreases! I'm encouraged that I actually meant to weigh in this morning for the week... and I forgot! :)

Give yourself small goals instead of focusing on the whole amount you want to lose. This one was most helpful for me because I am easily discouraged.
